Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - "Ohio" (1970)
"Ohio" is a protest song written and composed by Neil Young in reaction to the Kent State shootings of May 4, 1970, and performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. It was released as a single, backed with Stephen Stills "Find the Cost of Freedom," peaking at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100. Although a live version of the song was included on the group's 1971 double album Four Way Street, the studio versions of both songs did not appear on an LP until the group's compilation So Far was released in 1974. The song also appeared on the Neil Young compilation album Decade, released in 1977. On May 4, l970 members of the Ohio National Guard fired into a crowd of Kent State University demonstrators, killing four and wounding nine Kent State students. The impact of the shootings was dramatic. The event triggered a nationwide student strike that forced hundreds of colleges and universities to close. HR Haldeman, a top aide to President Richard Nixon, suggests the shootings had a direct impact on national politics. In The Ends of Power, Haldeman (1978) states that the shootings at Kent State began the slide into Watergate, eventually destroying the Nixon administration. Beyond the direct effects of the May 4th, the shootings have certainly come to symbolize the deep political and social divisions that so sharply divided the country during the Vietnam War era. A town in the US state of Ohio, far from any seismic activity, has experienced a string of earthquakes. Residents of Youngstown, as well as scientists, are pointing the finger at a controversial form of natural gas extraction, known as fracking. Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from Ohio.

Unexplained Sounds Now Being Reported In Central Ohio
This happened on Thursday, April 12, 2012...This couldn't be a sound from a jet since it lasted for more than 45 seconds, and Rocky Van Brimmer claimed it happened for more than 2-3 mins long. Plus, the FAA didn't claim responsibility to any aircraft in the area that would cause this. Here are some of the comments from residents in Central Ohio... "This was unlike anything I've ever heard. Deep, thundering and non-directional. It wasn't an aircraft. My best guess is an astroid passing in the upper atmosphere with fragments breaking up and exploding as they entered." "This has been going on in several states. The latest was in Wisconsin. There has been recordings of this sound in Illinois, Florida, and Indiana. Specialists in different areas have been called in and haven't been able to determine the source of the sound." "Another reason for such a sound like this is that as the planets align the portal to the next dimensions are opening so that the spirits stuck here can now proceed forward with their travels. As the alignment happens certain areas of the plant will hear a large booming sound do the vacuum cause by the void in the open gateway. When the moon is illuminated and the night is clear, with a pair of high powered 3D glasses you will be able witness the spirits begin there travels. Crosby Stills Nash & Young - Ohio - (live audio 1970)
Wikipedia: Young wrote the lyrics to "Ohio" after seeing the photos of the incident in Life Magazine. On the evening that CSN&Y entered Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles, the song had already been rehearsed, and the quartet with their regular rhythm section recorded it live in just a few takes. During the same session they recorded the single's equally direct b-side, Stephen Stills's ode to the war's dead, "Find the Cost of Freedom." The record was mastered with the participation of the four principals, rush-released by Atlantic and heard on the radio with only a few weeks delay. (This was despite the group already having their hit song "Teach Your Children" on the charts at the time.) In his liner notes for the song on the Decade retrospective, Young reported that "David Crosby cried when we finished this take." Indeed, Crosby can be heard keening "Four, why? Why did they die?" and "How many more?" in the fade.

The Low Anthem - To Ohio [HQ]
The Low Anthem - "To Ohio" , from the acclaimed album 'Oh My God, Charlie Darwin' , released on Nonesuch, in Spring 2009. Rolling Stone says the music on Charlie Darwin feels homemade and solemnly beautiful, and NPR Music called the song To Ohio a tender stunner in choosing it as a Song of the Day, saying, At times languid and haunting, but with detours into Tom Waits-esque stomping and hollering, The Low Anthems music seems equally informed by Simon & Garfunkel, Bob Dylan, The Band and a late-night ride home in Joni Mitchells car. Oh My God, Charlie Darwin was co-produced by The Low Anthem and Jesse Lauter. The band, Lauter, and several good friends went to Block Island, RI, for ten cold days in January 2008. They brought recording equipment along on the ferry ride and made the album by woodstove in an empty summer cabin. Among the 27 instruments on the record are zither, pump organ, Tibetan singing bowl, and an oil drum. The Low Anthem pays homage to two heroes with the records only cover, a one-take rendition of Home Ill Never Be, with words by Jack Kerouac and music by Tom Waits.
