Playing with the Octopi
Octopi are such fun to play with. Once you pick one up, however, they're hard to put down. They shift colors to match their surroundings and blush a deep red when aggravated. Octopi can be spotted at night because they glow a ghostly white when the flashlights hit them. They hunt by "tenting" an area with the membranes between their legs and reach under it with their tentacles to pick up any tasty shrimp that are trapped inside. Around 2:07 you'll see an eel making a snack out of one octopus' leg. The music is by Hapa titled Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai.

Experiment: - To test the abilities of marine life to survive in space. - An octopus is the best choice because of its intelligence, survivability and behavioral tendencies. - Their intelligence and methods of movement will be tested in space. - The experiment will send the small octopus into space inside Habitat 1. - This habitat will be adapted for the octopus experiment. It will contain two compartments: one for the octopus and one that contains food. A lid containing tiny holes will be located at the barrier so that the octopus can smell its food. - The habitat will also include a small opening to extract water from the habitat. Question: Can an octopus use its intelligence and motor skills to survive inside an established habitat in space by itself? Hypothesis The octopus will be intelligent enough to obtain its food and to move around in space by itself inside the habitat. The Method: - In a famous experiment, an octopus learned to open the lid of a jar in three hours. - When astronauts want to turn a valve in space, they have to hold onto a fixed surface first to avoid turning themselves. Therefore a fixed surface such as a handle will be located next to the lid for the octopus to hold onto. - The octopus must be smart enough to hold onto the fixed surface, open the valve, and get the food. - Next, to test the octopus's adaptability to microgravity, water will be ...
