3 Reasons to End Obamacare Before it Begins!

As the legality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act - aka Obamacare - goes before the highest court in the land, here are three reasons to chuck the whole program even before it gets underway. 1. It Represents the End of Limited Government. The Supreme Court will issue its verdict later this spring of course, but there's no question that if the government can force you to do something simply because you exist and draw breath, then the American experiment in limited government is over and done with. Whether it's the mandating of eating broccoli or buying insurance, a government that can make you do whatever it wants just ain't in the American grain. 2. Its Price Tag is Already Ballooning. The latest government estimate of cost tells us what we already knew. Health-care reform is going to cost us a lot more than the arm and the leg it's supposed to save us. The Congressional Budget Office is now saying that the first full decade of Obamacare is going to cost about $1.8 trillion , or double the original estimate used to sell the program. 3. Obamacare Won't Make Us Healthier. Health insurance isn't the same thing as health. Most of us might end up paying more for health care under the new law, but there's precious little evidence that coverage itself leads to lower medical costs. A 1993 study by the RAND Corporation found that "for the average person, there were no substantial benefits from free care ." Not smoking, eating moderately, and not boozing it up ...

Why Obamacare is "the Most Important Case" in 50 Years: Q&A with Timothy Sandefur of PLF

Does the fate of a federal government with limited powers rest in the hands of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia? And if so, will he rule against broad federal powers (as he did in the Gonzales case) or in favor of the feds' right to regulate just about anything (as he did in the Raich case)? The Supreme Court case over The Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, "is certainly the most important case on the reach of federal power in 50 years" says attorney and legal scholar Timothy Sandefur of the Pacific Legal Foundation. "The constitutional principle of where is the line drawn on federal power - that's a matter that our children and grandchildren will have to live with." The ruling will come sometime in early June, predicts Sandefur, who tells Reason.tv that the Affordable Care Act raises mutliple constitutional issues: Can part of the law be struck down and other upheld? Is the "individual mandate," which forces all Americans to purchase insurance as a condition of simply being alive, legal? Does the law's massive expansion of Medicaid shred the right of states to govern their own finances? "If the Court says yes, the federal government can compel you to buy health insurance," Sandefur tells Reason's Nick Gillespie, "then it would be a matter of politics whether Congress chooses to force you to buy a Chevy Volt or buy whatever else they think is good for society or the economy or whatever else a politician thinks is a good idea." What's more, Obamacare's Medicaid ...

Obamacare ARMAGEDDON! Hilarious Republican Predictions

Via Think Progress: "Today is the two-year anniversary of President Barack Obama signing the Affordable Care Act, which, once fully implemented will cover 30 million Americans and begin to lower the rate of growth in health care spending. Since reform passed, however, Republicans have voted to repeal or defund the law at least 25 times and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is preparing to focus largely on health care as he charts "a course for a Republican Senate in 2013 and what could be a bruising reelection bid in 2014." During the nearly 10-month legislative battle that preceded passage and in the years after, the GOP characterized the bill as a "socialist" "government takeover" and warned Americans that the bill would destroy lives and American society, hurling apocalyptic warnings that seem downright satirical two years later...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down, including laughable warnings from Rick Santorum and Michele Bachmann. * thinkprogress.org Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Obamacare #FAIL: Day 3 at the Supreme Court

"If I was in the Obama administration, I would not be comfortable with how the last three days went." Reason's Damon Root was in attendance for the third and final day of oral arguments before the Supreme Court on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which focused primarily on the issue of severability, which brings into question whether the individual mandate be excised from the law, or if the law in its totality must be struck down. Now that the case is in the hands of the Court and a decision isn't expected until late June, Root thinks the Obama administration has reason to be concerned not only because their Solicitor General's performance rated poorly, but because "their arguments were nowhere near as strong as they thought they were going to be." Runs about 3 minutes. Produced by Anthony L. Fisher, shot by Josh Swain and Fisher. Obamacare at the Supreme Court: Day One

Reason's Damon Root got a coveted seat for the Supreme Court oral arguments on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Day one of this epic judicial showdown focused primarily on whether or not the individual mandate constitutes a tax. If the justices rule that the penalties associated with the mandate should be considered a tax, the challengers to ACA would have to wait until 2015, when the law goes into effect to challenge it. The main event of these proceedings, the arguments over whether or not the individual mandate is constitutional, will take place tomorrow. Obamacare, Mandates and Regulatory Confusion: Reason-Rupe Poll Results with Emily Ekins

A new finding by the Reason-Rupe Public Opinion Survey shows a majority of Americans dissatisfied with the health care law being debated in the Supreme Court while simultaneously confused about the role of government in current health care policy. When it comes to health care reform, "it's hard to move forward if people aren't clear as to what the market currently looks like."Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie sat down with Ekins to discuss the poll's findings, what Americans think about the current health care system, and the misconceptions surrounding regulation in the health care market. Colbert Declares Obamacare Dead

Stephen Colbert has declared: "Obamacare is dead!" Pillorying everyone from CNN's Jeff Toobin to Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly Colbert took on the terminal state of the health care bill ... according to many in the media (except Slate's own Emily Ba. The Supreme Court has just heard opening arguments this week [[include Slate link?]] about the constitutionality of President Obama's landmark legislation, including the legality of an individual mandate, causing some pundits to make premature predictions—which Colbert of course revels in celebrating. The Supreme Court is far from making any decisions on the bill yet, and many speculate deliberation could extend until June. But don't expect the media to be patient; there will be plenty of dramatic headlines to fill the airwaves in the coming months. The best ones, of course, may come from Comedy Central.

"Constitutional Thunderdome": Day Two of Obamacare Oral Arguments

Reason's Damon Root attended the pivotal second day of oral arguments before the Supreme Court on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), which he described as a "Constitutional Thunderdome." The debate over the legality of the mandate to purchase insurance at the heart of ACA was, says Root, a rough-and-tumble colloquy about the "the role of government in our lives" and "what sort of limits the Constitution places on the federal government." "I'm more confident after today's arguments than I was going in that the individual mandate is in trouble," says Root. Oral arguments end tomorrow and the Supreme Court's decision is expected in early June. Runs about 3 minutes. Produced by Anthony L. Fisher, shot by Josh Swain and Fisher. The Lies That Grew Up To Be Obamacare

Happy Birthday Obamacare! The Little Lies That Grew Into The Biggest Government Intrusion Into Your Lives and The Greatest Government Take Over In American History! Ten of Obamacare's Biggest Lies and Failures from the Last Two Years! The two biggest lies about Obamacare (among many) that were told to sell it to the American people were, The cost would be low and you would get to keep your own provider and the plan that you currently have! But 2 years later, the truth is.... The original 10-year price tag, the one selling point that made it "safe" for Democrats to drop this fiscal atomic bomb on the American people was the $940 billion price tag. Two years later, $1.76 trillion price tag, soon to top $2 trillion when the window slides forward another year in 2013 and the new projection of $10 to $20 trillion when it reaches into 2023. Remember, they calculated this monstrosity so that it wouldn't take effect until 2014, which means that the cost of the first four years of implementation was essentially zero. Even though the Obama administration raided Medicare of $500 billion to fund it when it passed and starting next year (2013), taxes kick in for every American to get the ball rolling. That $940 billion figure really represented just six years of cost, not 10, but it was politically invaluable to Democratic messaging in letting them tout the bill as costing less than a trillion dollars. Now that we're nearing 2014 and the 10-year window of cost projections has slid ...
