Oaxaca City is located in Mexico's southern region in the middle of a zone surrounded by four valleys. Behind the valleys lie three important mountain ranges, which keep the climate mild with an average temperature of 18º C (64º F). In this city, the capital of the state of Oaxaca, you can admire the beautiful architecture of the buildings in the Centro Historico (Historic Center), which was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. The edifices include la Catedral (The Cathedral), el Templo y ex Convento de Santo Domingo de Guzman (The Temple and Ex-Convent of Saint Domingo de Guzman), la Basilica de la Soledad (The Basilica of Solitude) and el Teatro Macedonio Alcala (The Macedonio Alcala Theater), among other magnificent colonial and 19th-century constructions. As you visit the main plaza, the numerous establishments surrounding the Historic Center, and the traditional markets, such as Benito Juarez and 20 de Noviembre, you'll find all kinds of crafts that come from various regions of Oaxaca. Among the most popular crafts are the colorful alebrijes, swords, wool garments and beautiful black pottery. At some of the more traditional places you can try the delicious local fare, such as tamales, mole dishes and Oaxacan cheese. Another favorite is Oaxaca's famous mezcal, a regional alcoholic beverage made from the maguey plant. Observance of Semana Santa in Mexico dates from the Spanish conquest. The Good Friday parade is a somber, silent procession, except for the sounds of drums, the rattler and of crosses being dragged across the cobblestones. It's a highlight of the annual Saints Week celebrations in Oaxaca city. The main religious statues in the downtown churches are taken out for a stroll, placed on platforms surrounded by flowers and candles, and carried on the shoulders of men and women wearing brightly colored hoods. Caught on Tape: Rare Jaguar Sighting in Oaxaca, Mexico
Mexican authorities on Wednesday (May 09) confirmed that a jaguar has been spotted for the first time near Mitla, which lays approximately 40 kilometres (24 miles) from the southern Oaxaca state capital of Oaxaca City. According to Mexico's National Commission for Protected Areas (CONANP), the jaguar caught on camera is the first one confirmed to exist in the area of San Pablo Villa de Mitla, which is part of the 4900-hectare Yagul and Mitla Natural Monument. Pavel Palacios Chavez, an administrator at Yagul and Mitla Natural Monument, said the jaguar likely migrated through heavily forested and mountainous areas from Oaxaca's Sierra Juarez mountain range, which is part of the larger Sierra Madre de Oaxaca. "There hadn't been a sighting in this area of the central valleys until now. It's a high-altitude zone that is connected to the Sierra Juarez. We believe that it's this connectivity between the forests of Sierra Juarez and the forests of this part of the valley that has facilitated the transfer of this species," he said. Authorities detected the jaguar - North America's largest feline - using remote cameras which were left attached to trees and other vegetation, allowing conservationists to observe the movement of animals throughout the night. Oaxacans are so proud of their capital that they've designated the entire city of Oaxaca a national historic monument. No new building is permitted within 5 kilometers of the city center. Each day the local indians gather at Oaxaca's shady central plaza to display their handicrafts. The plaza is one of the most beautiful in all of Mexico and provides an inviting spot for leisurely relaxation or perhaps for a shoe-shine and a morning cup of coffee. Its colonial charm and streetside cafes are reminiscent of the older sections of a fine European town. A few blocks from the plaza is the church of Santo Domingo - its modest exterior gives way to a gilded, highly ornamented interior.
