Bamboo Nunchaku
I had pieces leftover from my "Double Shinai" project and I didn't want them to go to waste. After noticing that they were tapered and the perfect length for nunchaku, I brainstormed how to put it together. It's my honest opinion that slatted bamboo contact training nunchaku are safer to use than padded rubber nunchaku which weigh more and have a clumsy balance. This proto-type nunchaku is still in development and more safety is being designed into it. Currently, it has only one cord tying it together. Once again, I'm working out a way to have THREE cords connecting the kun. More than likely, it will be three different lengths of cord with knots at the ends since the internal core of the bamboo slats are very narrow. I have yet to try practicing contact with this training tool. But, I feel that prior to each use, the cord must be inspected and tested for holding capacity (check to see it won't slip out during training). Also, the leather grip must be tightened each time to insure the slats won't slip apart. Adding sport tape to the ends of the grip may help prevent them from slipping loose. Don't, however, apply so much tape that the slats don't flex. The idea of the slats being allowed to flex on the ends of the nunchaku is to distribute impact over a larger surface area and reduce the likelihood of injury. Foam rubber nunchaku are much heavier and do not flex as much as this bamboo design. This video was made to demonstrate the possiblities of bamboo as a nunchaku ...

This is my flagship video and it deserves proper attention. A very safe way to tie nunchaku that doesn't involve knots. If one center strand fails, the other two stay tight. No one gets hurt from a free flying rod. Edit: Some have asked what kind of cord I'm using. It is mil-spec parachute chord.
