ASPCA's "Cat of the Year" Nora The Piano Cat profiled in this segment of MSNBC's Caught On Camera. Features interviews with Nora's personal assistants, Betsy Alexander and Burnell Yow! (he is seldom seen in front of the camera), and it offers a rare glimpse into the relationships between Nora and her siblings: Gabby, Clara, Max, Rennie, Ellie, and Jenny. Actually, the two latter cats joined the Raven's Wing Studio clan after the taping. Also included is a brief look at CATcerto, the amazing concerto composed and conducted by Mindaugas Piecaitis. The musical composition was inspired by Nora's playing, and she appears as guest soloist via a large video screen behind the performers. Actually, the famous four-footed pianist does not perform live on the stage. Her playing is heard through a video projector. The Klaipeda chamber orchestra is rehearsing the concert program which will be presented to the young listeners of this port city. The solo in this piece, which was written by the conductor and composer Mindaugas Piecaitis, is performed by the purring world-renowned star from the US the four-footed pianist Nora. The conductor says that the idea to include the piano-playing cat in the repertoire of the musical program for children was born when he saw film footage about her. Mindaugas Piecaitis: "I was so enchanted and delightedAnd just by chance I was preparing a childrens program for Klaipeda. Jokingly, I proposed that we show the children that cat. There is a special surprise for the young audience at tomorrows concert: the premiere of conductor Mindaugas Piecaitiss composition for a cat and orchestra. The concerts soloist the cat Nora lives and plays in the United States. Mindaugas Piecaitis says he learned about this unusual, world-famous performer, whose recordings have been produced on a DVD, by chance through an e-mail he received. Mindaugas Piecaitis: "I got in touch with her owners and we began to speak completely spontaneously about perhaps using some of her images at a childrens concert and composing a piece especially for her. I dont think there is anything like this in the world as yet." The piece composed for the cat will be played for the first time in Klaipeda tomorrow, later it should travel to the United States. The composition lasts barely four minutes, however, according to the composer it is truly a challenge for the orchestra. Souris likes Nora the Piano Cat part I
www.youtube.com Souris (French for mouse) is a young orphan kitten of perhaps 8 or 9 weeks young. She's been at our place two and a half week now, after having stayed at a neighbour, along with 3 brothers, since they were found when most likely about 10 days old. The neighbour and I raised them with bottles, care, patience and love. Is there any other way? No! Two brothers were adopted already and Souris and Clochard (now Juul/Jules) came to live with us for the time being. Souris has to share a relatively small house with two dogs, Sara and Sascha. They have met and see eachother for a few moments every day, but a close encounter resulted in Sara lashing out to Souris and biting little baby cats is a 'no can do', so extra guidance and vigilance is required for sure. We manage so far and when the dogs are out walking or out of the room with the door closed, Souris can explore her young kitten abilities and also discovered Nora the Cat and her piano playing. It's not the first time Souris has showed an interest in sounds and music, though. Or moving images. Who knows Nora can now be Souris' tutor via the internet and stimulate her to explore her own musical felinity...

Bertie our cat loves playing piano, named after former Irish Prime Minister, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. We discovered her music talent when we had tradesmen in house on their own, Bertie sneaked in window, played piano, and disappeared. They thought house was haunted. Sadly Bertie departed this world in 2001. Bertie's owner was by amazing coincidence called Nora, my late wife.

Teach your cat to play piano like NORA
Nora may be a natural, but anyone can train their cat to play like her, using treats. I was reading a book on animal training, for my dog, and the author said that she was able to get her cat to "play" the piano by using rewards. I wanted to see for myself if it would be posssible with our seven-month cat, Muffin. It was easier than I imagined - try it for yourself if you have a cat - it's a great way to impress your friends! I put the toy piano in front of the cat, and started waving some food (he loves tuna) until the cat accidentally steps on the piano. When he does this you say 'good boy' and give him some tuna. After a few times, the cat learns that to get the food he has to press the keys. When he has learned this, don't reward him every time, wait for him to press the keys a few times to get the reward - that's how you get the 'playing the piano' effect! Of course, the cat has no musical notions at all, if I sit him on the chair and show him some fish, he starts moving his paws up and down even if there is no piano. But it's really cute, all the same.
