As the orchestral refrain from Saint-Saens' 'Samson And Delila' was played, this strange Weimar version of Mickey Mouse began singing in an angelic voice. The Nomi Song is Andrew Horn's award-winning look at the life of German-born singer Klaus Nomi. One of the most profoundly bizarre characters of the late 70s/early 80s New Wave underground scene, Klaus Nomi was a genuine counter-tenor who sang pop music like opera to enthusiastic club audiences. Through archival performance footage and interviews with his friends and fellow artists, Nomi's influence and unique style are brought to life twenty-two years after his death from AIDS. Part documentary, part music film and part sci-fi, The Nomi Song is a story of love of music and love of performing at a time when it seemed as though everyone was struck by a sense of urgency to make something - anything. A time of no limits. Klaus Nomi was on the verge of international fame as a singer when he tragically became one of the first gay artists to die of AIDS (then referred to as the "gay cancer"). He was as much a genuine talent as he was the engine of his own destruction. He was an alien amongst the outcasts and an obviously tortured soul who, at the same time, radiated optimism when optimism was "officially" out of fashion. Klaus : Hum... like Rudolph Valentino*. Hehe, kidding. Well, I did everything, even dirty jobs, like dishwashing or delivery boy for a grocer, delivering flowers, cooking, peeling vegetables... it was a curious story, up to a point it became unbearable. The urge to sing was stronger, so one day I performed in a club and it was very successful ; then I could give up all those dreadful jobs, and devote my time to music. Interviewer : Why did you choose that name, "Nomi"? Klaus : It was on inspiration. I think the name sounds good, it doesn't really have a certain national taste, you know, it could be any nation, because I see myself as universal, not as German, American, French ot whatever you want, cause we are all on this planet, we're all living on the earth. The jobs report has been deemed "good" because the headline unemployment number went down a little to 8.3%. Bernanke actually said this understates the weakness of the labor market, but do these monthly numbers matter at all? People who crunch the numbers seem to say no. David Stockman, Ronald Reagan's former budget director in an email that's been made public wrote you basically can pick and choose what you want from the reports to support your thesis but, "In short, if you spend a little time with these numbers you will know that they are being made up." John Mauldin, financial expert was writing about something similar that these numbers are subject to large revisions up or down - so take them with a grain of salt. So if that's the case and the Bureau of Labor Statistics is the emperor wearing no clothes, coming out with these meaningless numbers each month, why are markets and the media glued to them?
