Nodar Kumaritashvili Fatal Luge Crash
On February 12, 2010, Kumaritashvili was fatally injured in a crash during a training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre when he lost control in the final turn of the course and was thrown off his luge and over the sidewall of the track, striking an unprotected steel support pole at the end of the run. He was travelling at 143.6 km/h (89.2 mph) at the moment of impact. At a test event in 2009, a luger had clocked a record 153.937 km/h (95.652 mph) on the same track, prompting Josef Fendt, president of the International Luge Federation (FIL), to comment: "It makes me worry."

Kumaritashvili on Friday flew off the track and smashed into a metal column, leaving him unconscious, bleeding from the face and needing on-site resuscitation that ultimately failed. There have been several other casualties on the track at the Whistler Sliding Centre widely regarded as being one of the most difficult on the circuit. The body of Nodar Kumaritashvili, the luger who was killed in a horrific training accident at the Winter Olympics, arrived in Georgia Wednesday for an emotional homecoming. Draped in a Georgian flag, Kumaritashvili`s coffin was carried through an honour guard of young athletes after arriving in the early morning hours at Tbilisi airport, from where the dead sportsman was taken to his native village of Bakuriani. Relatives, friends and those who were horrified with the death of the sportsman, are gathered at his home to pay final respect to the athlete. Part of Georgian delegation returned to Georgia too, the head of the Olympic Committee, Gia Natsvlishvili and the coach and the uncle of the hero athlete, Felix Kumaritashvili, stopped the visit to Canada and arrived home too.

The body of Olympic luger Nodar Kumaritashvili is on its way back to Georgia. But not before he was mourned at a memorial service in Vancouver on Monday. Kumaritashvili died when he flew off the Whistler luge track in training, only hours before Friday's opening ceremonies. VANOC chief John Furlong was among the pallbearers at the memorial service for the 21-year-old. I am proud of whats happened here this morning, and the way the city and the people have shown up to support this team and the delegation, Furlong told The Province after the memorial service. Nobody has prepared or trained for this. Furlong helped carry Kumaritashvilis casket to the hearse, and was moved to the brink of tears when he spoke to this reporter. When I found out about this (last Friday) it was like getting a phone call that my own son had been killed, he said. About 40 mourners attended the short service at First Memorial Funeral Home at 602 Kingsway. They included IOC and VANOC officials, as well as members of the Georgian Olympic team, headed by Felix Kumaritashvili, a Georgian coach and Nodars uncle. During the 30-minute service, mourners lit candles and placed them on an adjacent table. Mourners carried flowers, filing past the open casket in silence. As is Georgian custom, people touched the dead lugers body, and his uncle spent some private time alone, before the casket was closed. This was not the first tragity on this track. 12 other people have also crashed on this track, they all have excaped with no or minor injuries. Updated information of the crash It appears after a routine run, the athlete came late out of curve 15 and did not compensate properly to make correct entrance into curve 16," they said. "This resulted in a late entrance into curve 16 and although the athlete worked to correct the problem he eventually lost control of the sled resulting in the tragic accident. The technical officials of the FIL were able to retrace the path of the athlete and concluded there was no indication that the accident was caused by deficiencies in the track. The 4500 foot long cource (mens start) has been moved to the womens track start. All olympic contestands have to start at the womens start. This has been done to prevent further injuries.

In an accident so grisly and horrific that Canadian TV stations suggested viewers turn away, the young athlete died shortly after flying too fast through the 50-50 Curve, losing control on the final 270-degree turn, hurdling projectile-like over an icy wall and slamming into an unpadded -- yes, unpadded -- steel pole. A rescue crew tried to revive him trackside by pumping his chest and giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, but there was no hope. Kumaritashvili was dead, a victim of a sport gone mad and organizers who weren't paying enough attention. So sadly, for a subtle country that aches to show its might and efficiency, Canada already has its defining moment of the XXI Winter Games. Regardless of Vancouver's beauty or how spectacular the competition turns out, how are we going to forget that a luger perished because a bunch of morons built the track too fast?
