The Admiral Chester Nimitz Story - The Big Picture

National Archives and Records Administration ARC Identifier 2569700 / Local Identifier 111-TV-436 Big Picture: The Admiral Chester Nimitz Story Not since the Civil War has a conflict provided the world with such a memorable list of military titans than those of World War II. THE BIG PICTURE, having presented the lives of Generals Marshal, MacArthur, and Stilwell, now turns to honor the Army's sister service with this pictorial biography of one of its most distinguished heroes -- Admiral Chester Nimitz. Raised on the extensive plains of Texas, Admiral Nimitz had never seen an ocean when he entered Annapolis at the beginning of the century. Yet, forty years later he rescued the world's largest body of water from the tyranny of one of the mightiest fleets ever assembled. His incredible and brilliant victories at Midway and the Coral Sea, at Okinawa and the Philippines, will remain forever as an example of the United States Navy's proudest heritage. THE BIG PICTURE captures the time, the battles, and the man in "The Admiral Chester Nimitz Story." Using rare, previously unshown film, the viewer is taken back half a century to the early days of the Naval Academy, the Spanish-American War, and the time when Chester Nimitz and the US Navy began to grow together to produce today's modern fighting force. The second half deals with his role during World War II, his contributions to strategy and leadership, and his personal example of courage and devotion that will always he admired ...

The NIMITZ Class of Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carriers.

All information supplied in this video was updated and correct, as of 1st November, 2011. The first three Nimitz class carriers were originally designed as replacements for the elderly Midway class. The largest and most powerful warships ever built, they differ from the earlier nuclear-powered USS Enterprise in having two reactors rather than eight, with ordnance magazines between and forward of them. This increases the internal space available to allow some 2 570 tons of aviation weapons and 10.6 million litres (2.8 million US gal) of aircraft fuel to be carried. These totals are sufficient for 16 days of continuous flight operations before stocks have to be replenished. The class is also fitted with the same torpedo protection arrangement as carried by the USS John F. Kennedy, and is laid out with the same general arrangement and electronic fit as the JFK. Four deck-edge aircraft elevators are available: two forward and one aft of the island on the starboard side and one aft on the port side. The hangar is 7.80 m (25 ft 7 in) high, and like those of other US carriers can accommodate, at most, only half of the aircraft embarked at any one time; the remainder is spotted on the flight deck in aircraft parks. The flight deck measures 333 x 77 m (1 093 x 253 ft), the angled section being 237.70 m (780 ft) long. It is fitted with four arrester wires and an arrester net for recovering aircraft. Four steam catapults are carried, two on the bow launch position and two on the ...

Nurebmberg Day 169 Nimitz / Doenitz

This segment from the Court TV documentary on the Nuremberg Trial anchored by Fred Graham shows the cross examination of Defendant Karl Doenitz, Commander-in-Chief of the Nazi Navy, by Sir David Maxwell-Fyfe.The subject was certain Orders issued by Doenitz regarding rescue: "Do not rescue any men; do not take them along; and do not take care of any boat of the ship...." To counteract this evidence, Doenitz's defense counsel, Dr. Otto Kranzbuehler obtained the permission of the Tribunal obtain an interrogatory from US Admiral Chester Nimitz, Commander-in-Chief of the US Pacific Fleet. On July 2, 1946 Dr. Kranzbuehler offered the Nimitz answers into evidence . It was cruciall testimony for Doenitz.. For further information, see "www.roberthjackson.org".

USS Nimitz aircraft carrier docked in Phuket

Phuket welcomed another group of US Navy ships & sailors this week for their popular R&R shore leave. The USS Nimitz, a nuclear powered aircraft carrier, one of the largest in the world, was the star attraction for a group of local press to see & tour on board Together with USS Pickney & Rentz, they docked at Ao Makham, off the deep sea port. While our press gang walked the planks of Nimitz, up to 5000 sailors were patiently lining up to leave or hanging around the hanger. They obediently follow their chain of command right up to the President, while we followed David Bennett, their Deputy Public Affairs Officer as he led us past some of the 60 aircraft both planes and helicopters, parked on the packed deck Rear Admiral John 'Fozzie' Miller, Commander of Carrier Strike Group 11, told us how happy they were to be in Phuket: We are absolutely delightedwell enjoy the sun He revealed how he & Captain Paul O. Monger, Commander of USS Nimitz, would be spending their money in Phuket: Well my wife says the jewellery shops are good spend a few hundred dollars per person. The captain pointed out the Nimitz saves a lot of money on fuel with its nuclear engines: Well this ship was commissioned in 1975. refuels after 20 years... worth $3-4 billion not incl. aircraft, no sir. Also a few clips of my air show footage of the Blue Angels included, because after their two years with the Navy and Marines demonstration team, these ships are where they go back to serve freedom once again. Six of the ten Nimitz-class carriers shown in this video, on San Diego bay. A concise overview of chosen footage from nearly four years of filming them - Difficult to narrow down what footage to squeeze into three minutes, from hours of archives, from 2007 through 2010. This film is representative of individual films of each one of these ships, and each are available for public viewing at my YouTube channel. In order of appearance in this film are: USS John C. Stennis CVN-74, year 2007 visiting her old home port. USS Carl Vinson CVN 70 entering her new home for first time. This was just after weeks of providing medical care, food and water to Haiti, after the devastating earthquake. USS Nimitz CVN-68, whose home port is San Diego for only a few more weeks. (I will be filming her exit for her new home port in Washington state soon.) USS George Washington CVN-73, disembarking to become stationed in Japan. Jack Nimitz, Baritone Sax - "Night In Tunisia" (Supersax, early 1980s) Pepper Adams Jazz Channel

Jack Nimitz, Baritone Sax, makes a special featured guest appearance on the Pepper Adams Jazz channel. Solo starts at 3:00 minutes. Like Pepper Adams, Jack Nimitz (11 Jan.1930 - 10 June 2009) used a metal Berg Larson mouthpiece, but his sax was neither a Selmer nor one without the sound-deforming low A. Nimitz was primarily known as a sideman. In 1995 he released his first album under his own name, "Confirmation" (Fresh Sound). In 1997 he released "Live at Capozzoli's" (Woofy Productions). Supersax was a Charlie Parker tribute band formed by Med Flory and Buddy Clark that debuted in 1972. Their music consisted of harmonized arrangements [4-part, close harmony, with the baritone usually doubling the lead alto an octave lower] of Charlie Parker's music played by a saxophone section (2 altos, 2 tenors, and a baritone), rhythm section, and a brass instrument (trombone or trumpet). Notable brass soloists that recorded with the group included Conte Candoli (trumpet), Frank Rosolino (trombone) and Carl Fontana (trombone). Warne Marsh was a member in the first edition of the group, and although he was never given freedom to solo on any officially released materials, Lee Konitz has stated that there are bootleg tapes of the group where Warne played a solo. They won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance by a Group in 1974. Discography: "Supersax Plays Bird" (1972, Capitol), with Conte Candoli, Med Flory, Joe Lopes, Warne Marsh, Jay Migliori, Jack Nimitz, Ronnell Bright, Buddy ...

#2 Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier | Top Ten Fighting Ships

Nimitz class aircraft carrier From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Nimitz-class supercarriers are a class of ten nuclear-powered aircraft carriers in service with the United States Navy. With an overall length of 1092 ft (333 m) and full-load displacements of over 100000 long tons,[1] they are the largest capital ships in the world. Instead of the gas turbines or diesel-electric systems used for propulsion on many modern warships, the carriers use two A4W pressurized water reactors which drive four propeller shafts and can produce a maximum speed of over 30 knots (56 km/h) and maximum power of around 260000 shp (190 MW). As a result of the use of nuclear power, the ships are capable of operating for over 20 years without refueling and are predicted to have a service life of over 50 years. They are categorized as nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and are numbered with consecutive hull numbers between CVN-68 and CVN-77.[Note 1] All ten carriers were constructed by Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Virginia. USS Nimitz, the lead ship of the class, was commissioned on 3 May 1975, and USS George HW Bush, the tenth and last of the class, was commissioned on 10 January 2009. Since the 1970s, Nimitz-class carriers have participated in many conflicts and operations across the world, including Operation Eagle Claw in Iran, the Gulf War, and more recently in Iraq and Afghanistan. The angled flight decks of the carriers use a CATOBAR arrangement to operate aircraft, with ...

Arma 2 - USS Nimitz Aircraft Carrier Take Off & Landing - Gameplay [HD 720]

Taking off and landing in an AV-8B Harrier jet on the USS Nimitz. Not really sure whether the USS Nimitz's uses Harrier's but it it's one of few planes in Arma 2 that can land on this beast of a ship properly! I had quite a few failed landing attempts before touching down successfully. I don't really like using the IFOLS (The landing helper lights) because they obstruct my view of the landing strip so I fly by eye most of the time on landing. The ship is an amazing mod for Arma 2. It has several working elevators and a massive hanger bay inside the ship. There's also a control room inside and all the launching catapults work too as featured in this video. Landing takes a fair amount of practise even in the Harrier which I think is the easiest jet to land on it. But as long as you hit the restraining wires on the runway you should stop before you fly in the sea :P Enjoy! And don't forget to subscribe for more cool video's like this!

The 2012 Nimitz Memorial Lectureship: Ahmed Rashid - Lecture 1

The Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Memorial Lectureship nimitz.berkeley.edu Ahmed Rashid is "Pakistan's best and bravest reporter" (Christopher Hitchens). His unique knowledge of this vast and complex region allows him a panoramic vision and nuance that no Western writer can emulate. His book Taliban first introduced American readers to the brutal regime that hijacked Afghanistan and harbored the terrorist group responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Now, Rashid examines the region and the corridors of power in Washington and Europe to see how the promised nation building in these countries has progressed. His conclusions are devastating: An unstable and nuclear armed Pakistan, a renewed al' Qaeda profiting from a booming opium trade, and a Taliban resurgence and reconquest. While Iraq continues to attract most of American media and military might, Rashid argues that Pakistan and Afghanistan are where the conflict will finally be played out and that these failing states pose a graver threat to global security than the Middle East.
