Haiti gains reputation as 'a republic of NGOs'

Even before the earthquake, Haiti's government was not fully functioning and Haitians relied on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for many services, including healthcare, education and humanitarian aid. But many in the NGO community and outside of it say they are critical of the unchecked power this community can wield despite the good work. A report from Oxfam, one of the major NGOs working in Haiti admitted that international groups often exclude the state in their plans and should do more to work with the government. Paul Farmer, the UN deputy special envoy to Haiti, said until the government has the resources it needs, Haiti will remain "the republic of NGOs". Al Jazeera's Sebastian Walker reports. (Jan 12, 2010)

Ginger: Welcome to US Tzu Chi 360. I'm Ginger Chang. Today we bring you updates on Tzu Chi's reconstruction efforts in Haiti since the devastating 2010 earthquake. One of the great things about humanitarian work is the opportunity to meet other good Samaritans. One remarkable non-profit group is Solar Cookers International and we have the CEO, Ms.AmyJo Mattheis with us today on the show. Welcome AmyJo, first off, why should we go solar? AmyJo Mattheis: There are several reasons why it's important to cook with the sun. One is that it's free. You're not paying for the power of the sun. You're not cutting down trees to use firewood to fill in your cookstove. Another reason is that cooking over open fire targets women. It's certainly not gender-neutral. It's gender-specific because in most countries in most populations it's women who do the cooking, which leads to a variety of different upper respiratory diseases, including lung cancer, emphysema, asthma. G: Can you tell us maybe what improvements you've seen in the communities that are using these sun-powered gadgets right now? AJ: Absolutely. The CooKit, that cooker is a slow cooker so the women can cook their food in the sun in the morning, and then they don't have to tend the fire, so they're able to go pursue other entrepreneurial activities. So they've seen an increase in their wealth as well. G: So talking about empowering women, the young women at College Marie Anne also represent hope for Haiti's future too. Thus ...

A Lack of Law and Order: BU Law students provide relief services in Haiti

In the short time span between the end of exams and graduation, Jonathan Glick, along with two other law students, Joel Schmidt and Marc Aspis, traveled to Haiti to spend a week providing medical and relief work to victims of the earthquake. A former ski patroller, Glick had some basic medial training but found Haiti to be different than anything he'd ever experienced before because of the scale of the devastation and the amount of aid required. He found it sobering to see what a lack of law and order can do to a society. According to Glick, his expereinces in Haiti had a significant impact on him. Enough to make him reconsider what he wants to do with his future. - audio and production by Casey Atkins Related story, BU Today, "Serving Street Medicine with a Smile: LAW students volunteer for week in Haiti" www.bu.edu www.bu.edu/law

Haiti: 2 years after the earthquake

This is a moving report from Caroline Gluck for Oxfam from Haiti, returning to some of the places she visited two years ago. It is now two years since the most powerful earthquake in Haiti in 200 years struck the capital city of Port-au-Prince and the surrounding metropolitan area. In a matter of a few violent minutes the city was devastated. More than 220000 people were killed, 300000 were injured, and 1.5 million were made homeless. The earthquake was followed the same year by a cholera outbreak and then by Hurricane Thomas, making already severe conditions even worse. Oxfam has worked in Haiti for more than 30 years, not just in emergencies but also with communities and local organizations to find long-term solutions to the endemic poverty that people face each day. At the end of 2011 our focus has shifted from immediate humanitarian needs back to longer-term development. We are engaging with Haitian organizations to strengthen civil society, to help rebuild a new Haiti. More about Oxfam in Haiti www.oxfam.org

Sexual violence in Haiti 'increasing'

According to UK-based NGO Oxfam, reconstruction has barely begun in Haiti, a year after its devastating earthquake. In a new report, the organisation says Haiti has been paralysed by a lack of leadership from the government and the international community. In one example of what the report calls poor planning some money was allocated to build housing, while no money has been set aside to clear away rubble. Oxfam says the result has led to only a fraction of the rubble being cleared, while just 15 per cent of the much needed temporary housing has been built. One major reason Haitians - especially Haitian women - need temporary housing is security. According to another new report, released by Amnesty International, the risk of rape and sexual violence has increased dramatically in the camps. Aid groups have been trying to help women combat the threats. Al Jazeera's Tom Ackerman reports.
