City of New Orleans

NOTE: THIS VIDEO IS OUTDATED AND IS TO BE REVISITED & REVISED WHEN TIME ALLOWS. HOWEVER, BY POPULAR DEMAND, I WILL LEAVE THE ORIGINAL VERSION ONLINE. WHEN THE NEW VERSION IS UPLOADED, THIS VERSION WILL REMAIN UNAFFECTED. THANK YOU FOR VIEWING. This is obviously my most popular video to date, telling the story of favored overnight passenger train running between Chicago and New Orleans. Since then it's logged over 300000 views as the past of American railroading and travel are relived by the viewers. For most, it's a train of not so long ago that reminds us of how things have changed since then. I call it nostalgia. At some point, I plan to do an updated version of this very much loved video as you can see the techniques you see here are out of date compared to where I am now. Original description: This is a video dedicated to the Illinois Central's most famous daytime train. It mostly contains footage of MSTS, but there is a clip or two of TRS2006 and an excursion train me & dad followed to Cookeville back in October of 2005. Enjoy!

Hurricane Katrina: The Drive: New Orleans Lower 9th Ward

A painful irony of post-Katrina New Orleans is how few people throughout the country understand the extent of what has happened to the city. Many people do not realize that, nearly 10 months later, things are not back to normal in New Orleans. As America's attention fades from Hurricane Katrina's impact, a disabled New Orleans continues to struggle for survival. In many respects, New Orleans is alive and kicking. People are moving home, schools are opening, cultural activities have returned and, in some neighborhoods, life has a sense of near normalcy; however, all it takes is a short drive outside of the French Quarter or Uptown to witness extensive loss and devastation. The magnitude of flooding was incomprehensible and New Orleans still has many challenges to overcome. The only way to really get a sense of the magnitude of the post-Katrina destruction is to physically walk or drive through the affected areas. With this in mind, NOVAC presents The Drive. The Drive provides a raw visual and narrated tour through four of the most devastated neighborhoods in New Orleans and is supported with extensive footage, maps, interviews, digital imagery, and an original musical score by Emmy nominated composer, Gil Talmi. Through this community-based documentary project, we present stories from a local point-of-view. We hope this effort will garner continued support for the rebuilding of a great American city.

Battle of New Orleans, In 1814

Fun pictures to accompany Johnny Horton's song. I do not own rights to the song or images. BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS (Written by Jimmy Driftwood) Johnny Horton In 1814, we took a little trip Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip'. We took a little bacon and we took a little beans And we caught the bloody British in a town in New Orleans. We fired our guns and the British kept a-coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more, and they began to running, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. We looked down the river and we see'd the British come and there musta' been a hundred of 'em beating on the drum. They stepped so high and they made their bugles ring We stood beside our cotton bales and didn't say a thing. We fired our guns, and the British kept a-coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to running, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Ole Hickory said we could take 'em by surprise If we didn't fire our muskets 'till we look 'em in the eyes. We held our fire 'til we seen their faces swell Then we opened up our squirrel guns and really gave 'em... Well.. We fired our guns, and the British kept a-coming There wasn't nigh as many as there was a while ago. We fired once more and they began to running, On down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Well they ran through the briars, and they ran through the brambles And they ran through the bushes where a rabbit ...

NRA: The Untold Story of Gun Confiscation After Katrina

The video you will see on this web site is horrifying. The crimes committed against law-abiding gun owners are beyond comprehension. The arrogance of anti-gun politicians and government officials and their hate of freedom will churn your stomach. The law is the law, the Constitution is the Constitution. If ONE local mayor or police chief can decide what the Second Amendment means, it opens the door to tyranny—where ANY mayor or police chief can say what the Second Amendment means. You've seen this brand of abuse of freedom in the history books—in the pages about days of gun confiscations leading to the terror of Stalin, Mao and Hitler. But you'd never in a million years think it could happen in America. Well, it can and it did. And it will happen again unless we take action today. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, Police Superintendent P. Eddie Compass unleashed a wave of confiscations with these chilling words: "No one will be able to be armed. We will take all weapons. Only law enforcement will be allowed to have guns." Thousands of firearms were then confiscated from law-abiding gun owners. The police gave no paperwork or receipts for those guns. They just stormed in and seized them. With your help we're going to make the first time in New Orleans the LAST time in America. Thank you! Now, one year later, these crimes against gun owners have snowballed into a far greater threat to our freedoms. Even though NRA secured a court order demanding their immediate and unconditional ...

The City of New Orleans - Willie Nelson

City of New Orleans is a folk song written by Steve Goodman, describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans via the Illinois Central Railroad in bittersweet and nostalgic terms. Goodman got the idea while traveling on the eponymous train for a visit to his wife's family. He performed the song for Arlo Guthrie in the Quiet Knight, a bar in Chicago, and Guthrie agreed to add it to his repertoire. The song was a hit for Guthrie on his 1972 album Hobo's Lullaby, and is now more closely associated with him, although Goodman performed it until his death in 1984. The song has also been covered by Willie Nelson, John Denver, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Jerry Reed, Chet Atkins, Hank Snow, and others. Willie Nelson version Steve Goodman won a posthumous Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1984 for Willie Nelson's version, which was included on his 1984 album of the same name. It reached #1 on both the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in the United States[and the RPM Country Tracks chart in Canada. The City of New Orleans - Lyrics Ridin' on the City of New Orleans Illinois Central, Monday mornin' rail Fifteen cars and fifteen restless riders Three conductors and twenty-five sacks of mail All along the south-bound odyssey The train pulls out at Kankakee And rolls along past houses, farms and fields Passin' trains that have no names And freight yards full of old black men And the grave-yards of the rusted automobiles Good morning America, how are you? MAZE - Live in New Orleans: November 15, 1980

I had uploaded this video in four parts because I thought the 15 minute time limit still applied. I, subsequently realized that YouTube was allowing those who had "followed the community rules" to upload much longer videos. Thus, I am now uploading the entire concert. Note: In NO WAY do I intend to infringe upon anyone's copyright of this video. It is my firm belief that "sharing" - ie, letting someone VIEW my own content - does NOT infringe upon any copyright. Sharing it via a link to DOWNLOAD it clearly WOULD violate copyright. Still, copyright questions may come into focus simply because software exists that ENABLE YouTube to be "crawled" and, thus, videos to be "captured" from their site. So my not offering a direct download link may not be determinative - to YouTube OR the courts. ON THE OTHER HAND, being able to see the concert here SHOULD make many feel a need to order the DVD to view on their television screen. And I would gladly post a link here for others to purchase it! Thus, I believe I am in the clear. YouTube may not agree and may remove it. If they do, I probably won't challenge it and just not "skirt the line" on future uploads. But I AM the type of person who will push the limits. I NEVER intend to do anything illegal, but ... if there is a question... I tend to push on until there is a definitive answer... I DID receive the following message from YouTube pertaining to "Part 2" of the segments of this video that I uploaded: Dear Servant2All, Your video ...

New Orleans' Best Cocktails: The Mint Julep

With mixolgist Chris McMillian

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

In Werner Herzog's new film Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans, Nicolas Cage plays a rogue detective who is as devoted to his job as he is to scoring drugswhile playing fast and loose with the law. He wields his badge as often as he wields his gun in order to get his way. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he becomes a high-functioning addict who is a deeply intuitive, fearless detective reigning over the beautiful ruins of New Orleans with authority and abandon. Complicating his tumultuous life is the prostitute he loves (played by Eva Mendes) and together they descend into their own world marked by desire, compulsion, and conscience. The result is a singular masterpiece of filmmaking: equally sad and manically humorous. MPAA Rating: R c) 2009

NEW ORLEANS Louisiana

A fun-filled metropolis at the mouth of the Mississippi, New Orleans is a cultural melting pot and the birth place of jazz. In 1682, the Frenchman Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it 'La Louisiana'. However, Napoleon later accepted $15 million from President Jefferson and in 1840, it was the fourth largest city in the USA The Garden District is a sought-after residential area in which there is an abundance of magnolia trees, palms, shrubs and flowers. The city's largest graveyard, the Metairie Cemetery, has over 7000 graves and an array of spectacular mausoleums which astound the eye. Gumbo Soup, Jambalaya, Hurricane Cocktails and Dixie Beer are just a few of the traditional refreshments on offer in this carefree, non-stop city. Just outside the city, there are the swampy bayous alive with many exotic species. The Oak Valley Plantations, whose great wealth derived from the sugar cane industry prior to the American Civil War, part of which is reminiscent of some of the scenery from Hollywood's Gone With The Wind. In the 19th Century, New Orleans was North American capital of the Voodoo cult and today, it is a city of unique atmospheres, flavors, contrasts and Mardi Gras, an extraordinary city!

Thoughts on SOPA From New Orleans

In which Hank walks around the French Quarter and discusses the freaking sweet internet blackout that resulted in a great number of congresspeople dropping their support for SOPA and PIPA. The internet is coming into its own as a powerful political force, and just in time to face serious threats. Note: All buskers in this video received at least a $5 tip. Posting a video of a busker is a really interesting intellectual property discussion, actually. If I were to take 20 videos of that one man band and create a YouTube channel all about him and then make a bunch of money off of it and not give him any, that would clearly be wrong, but it would not (as far as I can tell) be illegal. He's performing in a public space and I am thus allowed to record him. It's another example of the rule "don't be a dick" being far more important than any law congress can pass on copyright reform. We are entering a brave new world here, thank you for standing up for the internet, helping to defeat SOPA and PIPA, and thinking deeply about these issues.

New Orleans: Preservation Hall - Keeping the history of jazz alive

Science has yet to invent a time machine, but walk into 726 St. Peter St. in New Orleans' French Quarter any night of the week and you may feel like you've stumbled into one anyway. Since the early 1960s, Preservation Hall has served as a haven for musicians familiar with traditional New Orleans jazz. As the clip above suggests, it's a cant-miss stop for any visitor to New Orleans, and not just for historical value. The Jaffee family—first founders Allan and Sandra and now their son Ben—set out to provide a venue for veteran players. They succeeded and then some: Preservation Hall has played a key role in passing traditional sounds from one generation to the next. In the second season of Treme, Delmont Lambreaux, the New Orleans-born jazz trumpeter played by Rob Brown, gets in an argument with some New York players who look down their nose at Preservation Hall as an artifact of another time that appeals only to tourists. They'd clearly never been there. Though grounded in past forms, the playing at Preservation Hall remains vital and spirited. It's hard to sound stodgy when you're playing music that depends on improvisation. Heard live, it doesn't sound the least bit old fashioned, and since traditional jazz's influence has seeped into virtually every musical style that emerged in New Orleans since its heyday, it doesn't sound the least bit distant.

New Orleans: St. Louis Cemetery - Set of Easy Rider's acid freak-out

Derived from Greek, the word "necropolis" means "city of the dead," and few places make the word seem appropriate quite like New Orleans' above-ground cemeteries. The city's position in relation to sea level makes it hard to bury the dead, making these types of cemeteries necessary. And, as often happens, necessity gave rise to art. St. Louis Cemetery #1 is the city's oldest burial spot. It's lined with monuments that date back centuries, and which exist in various stages of upkeep, from the brand new and well-preserved to graves crumbling into deep disrepair. The tight quarters, disorienting passageways, and intricate, sometimes eerie, religious sculptures give it an atmosphere unlike any other place on Earth. It's easy to see why Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and the rest of the team behind Easy Rider would choose it for the film's acid freak-out sequence. Yet, removed from the rapid editing, distressing industrial noise, and hallucinatory muttering, the place has an eerily peaceful quality. A steady stream of tourists come and go throughout the day, but the cemetery's walls and looming monuments otherwise largely isolate it from the sounds of the city around it. The necropolis also has its celebrities. These include Homer Plessy, of the Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision that changed the course of civil rights legislation, Etienne de Boré, New Orleans' first mayor, and Ernest "Dutch" Morial, the city's first black mayor. But the most-visited grave belongs to Marie ...
