On May 7, the Baltimore Higher Education Alliance for Real Democracy and Red Emma's brought Gar Alperovitz to Baltimore's 2640 Space to discuss "the emerging new economy." Joining Gar were Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin, who discussed the path-breaking legislation he co-sponsored making Maryland the first state in the country to legally recognize benefit corporations or "B-corps", and the Institute for Policy Studies' Daphne Wysham, who highlighted another Maryland initiative, the Genuine Progress Indicator, a new metric that presents a comprehensive alternative to one-dimensional economic indicators like Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
New Zealand: Doubtful Sound, Fiordland National Park
Doubtful Sound is a very large and naturally imposing fjord (despite its name) in Fiordland, in the far south west of New Zealand. It is located in the same region as the smaller but more famous and accessible Milford Sound. It took second place after said Fiord as New Zealand's most famous tourism destination. Doubtful Sound was named 'Doubtful Harbour' in 1770 by Captain Cook, who did not enter the inlet as he was uncertain whether it was navigable under sail. It was later renamed Doubtful Sound by whalers and sealers. A Spanish scientific expedition commanded by Alessandro Malaspina visited Doubtful Sound in February 1793 to conduct experiments measuring the force of gravity using a pendulum, a part of the effort to establish a new metric system. The officers of the expedition, which included Felipe Bauzá y Cañas, a cartographer, also made the first chart of the entrance and lower parts of the Sound, naming features of it. Today these form a unique cluster of the only Spanish names on the map of New Zealand: Febrero Point, Bauza Island and the Nee Islets, Pendulo Reach and Malaspina Reach.

Nike (NYSE:NKE) announced the debut of their Nike+ FuelBand, an innovative wristband that tracks and measures everyday movement, which it hopes will motivate and inspire people to be more active. Activities can now be measured through a new metric called NikeFuel: the more active you are, the more NikeFuel you earn. The Nike+ Fuelband will be available for pre-order starting January 19th in the US at Nikestore.com for a suggested retail price of $149. Nike's President & CEO Mark Park said, "The NIKE+ FuelBand is a way for Nike to further evolve the exciting possibilities of merging the physical and digital worlds. Nike has always been about inspiring athletes, and the NIKE+ FuelBand will help motivate them in a simple, fun and intuitive way." NIKE (NYSE:NKE) has potential upside of 3% based on a current price of $101.45 and an average consensus analyst price target of $104.47.
