Arsenal beat Newcastle United 2-1 in a Premier League encounter at Emirates Stadium. Robin van Persie and Thomas Vermaelen scored for Arsenal. Manchester United are at the top of the league table with 67 points followed by Manchester City. The Gunners are now three points clear of Chelsea in fourth place and just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur after the win.

Alan Pardew hailed Papiss Cisse's performance after Newcastle's 15th clean sheet of the season. Pardew: Cisse is special Papiss Cisse produced a brilliant brace to keep alive Newcastle's hopes of finishing fourth with a 2-0 win at Chelsea. The Senegal striker stunned Stamford Bridge inside 20 minutes when he collected a pass from Davide Santon, flicking it up with his right foot and blasting the ball past Petr Cech with his left. But that was nothing compared to what he had in store for the Chelsea keeper with his second. Newcastle appeared to be playing the game out during stoppage time when, out on the left flank, Cisse cut across a ball with his right foot and sent a swerving shot flying over Cech and into the net. In between the two strikes, Chelsea pushed and probed for an equaliser, with Santon clearing off the line from John Terry, but the home side lacked Cisse's spectacular cutting edge. And the win keeps Alan Pardew's side level on points with fourth-place Tottenham with two games to play. Chelsea are now four points behind and will surely need to beat Bayern Munich on May 19 if they are to play Champions League football next season. Newcastle United shocked English giant Chelsea with a 2-0 defeat inspired by an absolute stunner from Papiss Cisse at Stamford Bridge. The Senegalese international scored twice in the match, of which the 19th minute opener came with a brilliant left-foot volley into the top corner. With these two goals, Cisse took his goal tally to thirteen in twelve appearences for Newcastle. Huge Mystery Hole Appears In Newcastle UK May 17th 2012
"A huge hole in the road has appeared just yards from people's homes in Newburn, near Newcastle. The 10ft deep crater appeared suddenly on the afternoon of Thursday, May 17, taking an 8ft section of brick wall with it. Police closed off the road for a while as experts from Newcastle City Council and Northumbria Water were called in to find the cause. Workmen were later called in to fill in the hole. A police spokesman said: "There are a lot of mine workings around here. Possibly it is a coal working. We are still trying to work out what's happened. " Lynsey McMeekin, 28, of Spencer Court, whose flat looks onto the hole, said: "It is just crazy. "When I saw all the police cordons I thought there must have been an accident. " The crater expanded from Millfield Lane into land belonging to Just Brickwork Ltd after a dividing wall dramatically collapsed into the hole. Newburn Dene and a water culvert run underneath Millfield Lane and the Spencer Court flats, which were built in 2006. The lane is one of the main access routes to the nearby Newburn Manor Primary School and is regularly used by parents dropping off their children at school. Robert Lowes, 41, who lives on the nearby Manor Grove estate said the area had been blighted by sink holes for years. Just a few months ago a post box collapsed into a hole that appeared overnight. He said: "There is subsidence all around here. "We have had other big dips in the tarmac all over the place. "I know someone who has had a huge ...

Newcastle United pay tribute to former player Gary Speed with a rousing rendition of Welsh sporting anthem Bread of Heaven sung by opera singer Gwyn Hughes Jones. The tribute was followed by a minute's applause and was attended by members of Speed's family. The Wales manager, who played 285 times for Newcastle, was found dead in his home last month.

Ben Arfa Newcastle v Blackburn FA Cup Jonas Gutierrez scored a stoppage-time winner as Newcastle came from behind to dump Premier League strugglers Blackburn out of the FA Cup. The Argentine played a one-two with Leon Best and lofted a delicate finish over goalkeeper Mark Bunn. Blackburn had weathered an early storm before taking the lead through David Goodwillie's close-range finish. A wonderful individual goal by Hatem Ben Arfa made it 1-1 before Gutierrez snatched the victory. The winner arrived in the fifth minute of added-time but was just reward for a dominant second-half performance by the Magpies. Ben Arfa's magical goal - the France international beat several Blackburn players before firing past Bunn - sparked a late onslaught and the hosts had already missed several chances before Gutierrez's late intervention. The defeat inflicts further misery on Blackburn boss Steve Kean, whose team are rooted to the bottom of the league. In fact, Blackburn could easily have fallen behind inside the first 10 minutes as Bunn was forced into saves by Leon Best and Gutierrez. Ben Arfa then teed up Yohan Cabaye, but the French midfielder fluffed his effort. Blackburn responded with a spell of pressure and Ruben Rochina had a left-footed shot saved by Tim Krul in the 20th minute. Newcastle 3-1 West Brom | Alan Pardew Praises Newcastle Victory
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew praised his side for a "champagne" display in their 3-1 victory at West Brom. Forwards Demba Ba, Papiss Cisse and Hatem Ben Arfa were particularly influential as the Magpies moved level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea. "Today it was champagne stuff," Pardew told BBC Sport. "Demba, Papiss and Ben Arfa are a real front three. "We've been phenomenal all year, the players have worked so hard and deserve all the plaudits they get." Newcastle's recent victory over Norwich was their first win in five matches, and the improvement continued at West Brom. Cisse put them in front on six minutes from Ben Arfa's cross before Ben Arfa doubled the lead with a superb team goal. It was 3-0 on 34 minutes when Ben Arfa and Ba combined to set up Cisse for his second as the Magpies took total control. A defensive mix-up allowed substitute Shane Long to pull one back, but Newcastle held on and could have scored more. "First half, we played some really fantastic stuff," said Pardew. "I said before the game that at the training ground there was a new buoyancy after the win against Norwich. "We had chances to get the fourth goal, we knew that would seal it and that was my half-time message. But we managed to see it out. "This is a tough place to come and they've won with something to spare." Pardew replaced Chris Hughton as Newcastle boss in December 2010 and guided the club to 12th last season.
