International dish #10. Jack gives you a taste of another country on his international series. Here is the recipe: Curly kale with smoked sausages (Dutch / Netherlands) Ingredients: 2 lbs. Kale 2 lbs. potatoes 2 ounces crushed oats or poridge oats 6 large smoked sausages 6 ounces of bacon strips salt pepper nutmeg Directions: 1 Clean the kale, strip off the stalk and vein together. 2 Chop roughly. 3 Peel and cube the potatoes. 4 Cook the kale and bacon together in a little boiling water, salted if necessary, for 10 minutes. 5 Add the cubed potatoes and the oats. 6 Prick the sausages, and place them on top of the mixture. 7 Cover the pan with a lid, and boil the mixture gently until the kale is tender and the potatoes are soft; this takes about 30 minutes. 8 Remove the sausages and bacon, and mash the potatoes and kale together. 9 Season as required, with salt, pepper, and nutmeg. 10 Replace the sausages and bacon, and serve with plenty of mustard.

Netherlands stadium horror: Roof collapses at FC Twente De Grolsch Veste
Dutch mayor says one person has died and 10 more have been hospitalized with injuries after a sports stadium roof collapsed during off-season construction work. Peter den Oudsten, mayor of the Dutch town of Enschede, says a total of 14 people were injured when the roof at the southern end of the FC Twente stadium collapsed around midday Thursday. The Netherlands became a global leader because of very deliberate choices made by city leaders and traffic planners that made bicycle transportation a real priority, backed up with supportive policy, funding and state-of-the-art design. A delegation of city officials from Chicago, Washington DC and Miami visited Holland in search of great ideas to bring home.

It's not too far from Rotterdam in South Holland where we are currently based. It is an amazing theme park, sort of like a European Disney World. It has some amazing rides like the python wooden roller coaster, monsieur cannibal, mirador, fata morgana and the Efteling teacups. It is particularly well known for the spookjebos, or enchanted forest, that features characters from fairy tales like sleeping beauty and Hansel and Gretel as well as Dutch characters like langnek (long neck), and the efteling draak (dragon). It also has animatronic garbage cans that say "papier hier" to encourage kids to put their garbage away. The Efteling now features a hotel, golf course and even a theatre.

Having not missed out on qualification for the Euros since 1984, the Dutch immediately fancied their chances of making it to Euro 2012 after being drawn in Group E alongside Sweden, Hungary, Finland, Moldova and San Marino. Netherlands started their qualification campaign with an away game against San Marino, and unsurprisingly recorded a comfortable victory over the minnows. A Klaas-Jan Huntelaar hat-trick and goals from Dirk Kuyt and Ruud van Nistelrooy resulted in a 5-0 win for Oranje. Things would be less smooth in the following game, though, as Oranje only just managed to bag the full points against Finland. An early Huntelaar double got Holland off to a flier, but Mikael Forssell made it 2-1 shortly after, and the away side came close to leveling the scoring on a number of occasions. The World Cup finalists then recorded another hard-fought win over Moldova as Huntelaar's 37th-minute goal proved to be decisive. However, Holland would then turn on the style in the home match against their biggest rivals for a ticket for the finals - Sweden. Huntelaar and Ibrahim Afellay helped Bert van Marwijk's men to a 2-0 lead at half-time, before the duo again found the net after the interval to make it 4-0. Andreas Granqvist pegged one back in the closing stages of the game, but it was too little, too late for the Scandinavians. Bicycle lanes in the Netherlands are red. They are like a red carpet for cyclists. They are not just a bit of paint. It is actually a thick layer of very smooth red asphalt. This video shows a road (Parklaan) being resurfaced in the city of 's-Hertogenbosch (aka . Den Bosch). It makes clear how it is done. Four machines rolling down the street on a Sunday, Two with the red asphalt for the cycle lanes, two with black asphalt for the car lanes. The same night the white lines were painted on and the following day all traffic could use the street again. Cycle infrastructure 's-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands)
A short ride in 's-Hertogenbosch aka Den Bosch (Netherlands) on well connected but different types of cycle infrastructure. In this short stretch you can see a cycle lane, a protected (separated) cycle path, a grade separated cycle path/lane, a shared road with priority for cyclists and well designed junctions, one of which is a roundabout with priority for cyclists. The first few seconds show old fashioned (1960s) road design: the large entrance roads to a bridge. Here cyclists have to give priority. The arterial road was designed differently but the city never built it as planned. This resulted in a very strange 180 degree turn as a bridge entrance for motorized traffic which has to be crossed by cyclists. No really good solution was found for this design legacy. All this cycle infrastructure is next to one of the city's main through routes. Filmed on a quiet summer evening so the artery is less busy than in rush hour which goes for both motorized traffic as well as bicyclists.
