Dutch World Cup ∙ the Netherlands in South Africa 2010
Enjoy what the Dutch team did on the World Cup in South Africa this year. Again, we were véry close, like we did in 1974 and 1978. Now we lost the final against Spain, because of a goal of Barça's Andrès Iniesta. Holland won every single match on the tournament, except this final. It beat first Denmark, Japan and Cameroon, then Slovakia, Brazil and Uruguay. In spite of the disappointing end of the World Cup, Bert van Marwijk and his team did a great job! Bicycle Rush Hour Utrecht (Netherlands) III
Morning rush hour in the 4th largest city in the Netherlands. Streets look like this when 33% of ALL trips are made by bicycle! This is an ordinary Wednesday morning in April 2010 at around 8.30 am. Original time was 8 minutes that were compressed into 2 minutes, so everything is 4 times faster than in reality. The sound is original. This is one of the busiest junctions in Utrecht a city with a population of 300000. No less than 22000 bicycles and 2500 buses pass here every day. And yet Google Street View missed it. Because private motorized traffic is restricted here. These cyclists cross a one way bus lane (also used by taxis and municipal vehicles), two light rail tracks and then a one way street that can be used by private vehicles. Behind the camera is a railway (you can hear the squeaking sounds of the trains passing) and the main railway station is very close too. A number of rental bikes from the station pass and many of the cyclists will have come by train for the first part of their commute. For those who frown upon the total absence of bike helmets in this video, consider these findings from a US study: "Cycling in the Netherlands is much safer than in the USA. The Netherlands has the lowest non-fatal injury rate as well as the lowest fatality rate, while the USA has the highest non-fatal injury rate as well as the highest fatality rate. Indeed, the non-fatal injury rate for the USA is about 30 times higher than for the Netherlands. Injury rate per million km ...
Cycling to school; Culemborg (Netherlands)
Hundreds of thousands of children cycle to school every morning in the Netherlands. Kids cycling up to 15km one way are no exception. The roads and streets are literally full of cycling children for about one hour. The "cycle highway" from Geldermalsen to Culemborg is one such road. Hundreds of children going to school take the same safe route here. They form spontaneous groups and the closer they get to school the larger the groups become. When the school bell rings and all the children are in class, the cycle highway looks as deserted as it was before the kids went to school. See: hembrow.blogspot.com
Het Wilhelmus - National Anthem of The Netherlands
Het Wilhelmus is the national anthem of the Netherlands and is the oldest national anthem in the world, though the words of the Japanese national anthem (not the music) date back to the ninth century. Although it was not recognized as the official national anthem until 1932, it had remained popular with the Dutch people since its creation. It is also one of the very few anthems that does not focus on the history or military accomplishments of the people it represents, on the contrary, it tells of William of Orange, his life and why he is fighting for the Dutch. As a result, the anthem is written as if it were sung by William himself. The song is remarkably peaceful. The tune of the Wilhelmus is based on a French soldiers' song: "Autre chanson de la ville de Chartres assiégée par le prince de Condé" (English: "Another song about the city of Chartres under siege by the Prince de Condé"), which was popular around 1569 during the siege of Chartres. "Dutch blood or German blood?": There is an ongoing confusion and dispute as to what the author meant with "Duytschen bloedt" in the text, as the contemporary Dutch word "Duits" (being the modernised form of "Duytsch/Duijtsch") means "German". Another explanation is that "Duytsch" was at the time a variation of Dietsch meaning Dutch. Both could be correct as William of Nassau was born in Dillenburg in the county of Nassau in Germany and that it referred to William's German (rather than Dutch) descent. Yet others claim, however ...

Bicycle Rush Hour Snow - Utrecht, Netherlands
The first snow of the winter of 2009/2010 and the Netherlands came to a grinding halt. Motorised traffic and the trains that is, not the cyclists. They kept on going as they always do. Anonymous Netherlands Message To NOS RTL SBS News - YouTube.flv
Dear NOS, RTL and SBS news, Over the years Anonymous have seen you broadcasting the news in the Netherlands. Over the years Anonymous have seen you spreading lots of state propaganda. Many years already you have been telling lies and half-truths to the public without giving any solid background information. Anonymous is very unsatisfied by the way you have deceived the Dutch public. You are filling the heads of the people in the Netherlands with disinformation. You are giving the people in the Netherlands a total false view at the world by using your one sided copy paste ANP and Reuters journalism. Let's be honest NOS, RTL and SBS, you have deceived and trapped many people into a false reality. In this plastic reality people are driven by fear and not by love. Why is it so hard for you to ask critical questions about a lot of subjects? Why did Anonymous never hear you ask critical questions about imaginary terrorism and counter-terrorism, with its privacy killing measurements, corruption, 9 11,paedophiles like Joris Demmink, poverty, unhealthy chemical additives in our food, the chem trails in our air, genetically modified organisms, the so called third world countries, the codex alimentarius, the manipulation of oil prices and the manipulation off the stock-markets, false flag attacks, wars about oil, poppy-fields and building permanent bases in the middle-east. How is it possible you always put your fist very deep into the rectum off America and the NATO? Why don't you ...

Giant Mushroom-Shaped Cloud Looms Over Haarlem, Netherlands - Aug. 16, 2011
Before this gets lost and forgotten... thought I should share. 2011 the Year of the Crazy Clouds @_@... Recorded by this chap: www.youtube.com why is it that he was the only one to capture it? sleepy Dutch-landers!! wake up... and kinda cute and sad, nobody has said anything to him about it being on the national news there and he seems pretty excited. Any way, another weird giant UFO-esque cloud. Again. Meow. I stated somewhere that I thought for sure something must have exploded, but, since I do not speach DUTCH I can neither confirm not negate that assumption. But it was an assumption. Probably just a chemical release into the atmosphere. Or something. They are making weird clouds. Out of something... some stuff. For me, this is right up there with the Montreal, Canada UFO Cloud from July 18 (or 19?), 2011: www.youtube.com Recorded by .. hundreds of people it seems. woot

Slowly, the former seabed was reclaimed and the Dutch went to work drying the ground with the country's leading natural resource - the wind. Many children were already going home after school and a lot of students and women were on their bicycles in Utrecht, the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. It wasn't rush hour yet.

Cycle infrastructure 's-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands)
A short ride in 's-Hertogenbosch aka Den Bosch (Netherlands) on well connected but different types of cycle infrastructure. In this short stretch you can see a cycle lane, a protected (separated) cycle path, a grade separated cycle path/lane, a shared road with priority for cyclists and well designed junctions, one of which is a roundabout with priority for cyclists. The first few seconds show old fashioned (1960s) road design: the large entrance roads to a bridge. Here cyclists have to give priority. The arterial road was designed differently but the city never built it as planned. This resulted in a very strange 180 degree turn as a bridge entrance for motorized traffic which has to be crossed by cyclists. No really good solution was found for this design legacy. All this cycle infrastructure is next to one of the city's main through routes. Filmed on a quiet summer evening so the artery is less busy than in rush hour which goes for both motorized traffic as well as bicyclists.
Health care in the Netherlands
As of January 2006, a new insurance system for curative healthcare came into force in the Netherlands. Under the new Health Insurance Act (Zorgverzekeringswet), all residents of the Netherlands are obliged to take out a health insurance. The new system is a private health insurance with social conditions. The system is operated by private health insurance companies; the insurers are obliged to accept every resident in their area of activity. A system of risk equalisation enables the acceptance obligation and prevents direct or indirect risk selection.
