Learn Biology: Natural Selection

SALE TODAY: Learn Piano on iOS bit.ly Adjunct Professor Mary Poffenroth teaches various topics in biology in a series of Mahalo-produced videos. In this installment, Professor Poffenroth explains natural selection. She makes the point that evolution is a process affecting populations of organisms, not individuals. Professor Poffenroth explains how mutations are chance events, not willed by the organism. Natural selection is the process by which organisms that possess certain traits tend to survive longer and produce more offspring than organisms that lack these traits. Over many generations, those traits that confer fitness (that is, comparative success at survival and reproduction) are likely to increase in frequency in the population. Since environmental conditions are always in flux, it is not always possible to predict beforehand which traits will confer a survival advantage. A trait that enhances fitness in one environment can decrease fitness if the environment changes or if the population migrates to a new environment. bioweb.cs.earlham.edu The Darwinian theory of random mutation as the engine of natural selection replaced the earlier Lamarckian theory of inheritance of acquired traits. In Lamarck's theory, organisms were thought to be capable of evolving by force of will, intentionally modifying their behavior, then passing these modifications on to their offspring. In Darwin's theory, the variations are chance mutations over which the organisms have no ...

NATURAL SELECTION

As many more individuals of each species are born than can possibly survive; and as, consequently, there is a frequently recurring struggle for existence, it follows that any being, if it vary however slightly in any manner profitable to itself, under the complex and sometimes varying conditions of life, will have a better chance of surviving, and thus be naturally selected. Charles Darwin

Examples of Natural Selection

002 - Natural Selection Examples Paul Andersen details examples of natural selection in the world. He starts by explaining how changes in global temperatures are causing plants to adapt. He explains how mutations cause changes in phenotype which give organisms varying levels of fitness. Two specific examples of natural selection; sickle cell disease and muti-drug resistant tuberculosis are also included.

Simulation of Evolution by Natural Selection

Response to the argument that this simulation proves ID: Isn't this simulation intelligently designed? Yes, but so is any simulation of anything. A simulation requires an understanding of the physical laws involved. ID proposes that physical laws aren't sufficient to generate the complexity of life. So the argument that this simulation proves ID seems to boil down to this: A simulation of physical laws generating complexity proves that those physical laws cannot generate complexity. Please consider the absurdity of that argument before responding. ---- This video shows results from a research project involving simulated Darwinian evolutions of virtual block creatures. A population of several hundred creatures is created within a supercomputer, and each creature is tested for their ability to perform a given task, such the ability to swim in a simulated water environment. Those that are most successful survive, and their virtual genes containing coded instructions for their growth, are copied, combined, and mutated to make offspring for a new population. The new creatures are again tested, and some may be improvements on their parents. As this cycle of variation and selection continues, creatures with more and more successful behaviors can emerge. The creatures shown are results from many independent simulations in which they were selected for swimming, walking, jumping, following, and competing for control of a green cube. Behavior and Natural Selection

026 - Behavior and Natural Selection Paul Andersen explains how the behavior of various organisms is shaped by natural selection. The action of phototropism and the timing of photoperiodism have both been shaped by the relative availability of light. Courtship in the bower bird determines the success of offspring. And finally pollination represents the combined success of the coevolution between insects and flowers.
