Welcome to Namibia - English - part1 - www.embnamibia.at

Namibia -Africa's best keept secret! Namibia is a land of wonderful contrasts - the icy Benguela current sweeps up its western shore, home to an abundance of fish life. Ghostly fog floats from the shore to lie suspended over the brooding Namib Desert, providing much needed moisture to desert-adapted flora and fauna. The haunting Skeleton Coast hides shipwrecks in its misty waters and crumbling bones in its sandy shores, while the well-adapted desert elephants and rhinos roam the rocky hills of Damaraland and Kaokoveld further to the north. Revel in the game-rich Etosha Park or follow the meandering Zambezi and Chobe Rivers through the Caprivi Strip, home to glorious sunsets, vast elephant populations and honking hippos. Namibia (5/2007) - Himba tribe

The Himba are an ethnic group of about 20000 to 50000 people living in northern Namibia, in the Kunene region (formerly Kaokoland) Recently they have also built two villages in Kamanjab which have become a tourist destination. They are mostly a nomadic, pastoral people, closely related to the Herero, and speak Otjihimba, a dialect of the Herero language. The Himba breed cattle and goats. The responsibility of milking the cows lies with the women. Women take care of the children, and one woman will take care of another woman's children. Women tend to perform more labor-intensive work than men do, such as carrying water to the village and building homes. Men handle the political tasks and legal trials. Members of an extended family typically dwell in a homestead, "a small, circular hamlet of huts and work shelters" that surrounds "an okuruwo (ancestral fire) and a central livestock enclosure." Both the fire and the livestock are closely tied to their belief in ancestor worship, the fire representing ancestral protection and the livestock allowing "proper relations between human and ancestor." The Himba wear little clothing, but the women are famous for covering themselves with otjize, a mixture of butter fat and ochre, possibly to protect themselves from the sun. The mixture gives their skins a reddish tinge. This symbolizes earth's rich red color and the blood that symbolizes life, and is consistent with the Himba ideal of beauty. Women braid each other's hair and cover it ...

Metal Space Ball Crashes in Namibia, South Africa

"A mysterious metal ball apparently fell from the sky near a village in the north of Namibia, 480 miles from the capital Windhoek, recently. Authorities in Namibia were alerted around mid-November, about the crash of this hollow sphere but they disclosed about the finding only after conducting some tests. Eyewitnesses claimed to have heard a series of explosions few days before the extraterrestrial find. Police forensics director Paul Ludik told a foreign news agency that the mystery sphere has a diameter of 35 centimetres (14 inches), a rough surface and appears to consist of 'two halves welded together'. Ludik also described the object as being made of a 'metal alloy known to man,' weighing in at six kilograms (13 pounds). "It is not an explosive device, but rather hollow, but we had to investigate all this first," Discovery News quoted him as saying. Following the crash, baffled Namibian police have appealed to NASA and the European Space Agency for an explanation.
