'Europe openly discriminates Muslims'
Amnesty International is concerned by a rising trend of discrimination against Muslims across Europe. The rights group says Muslim women in Europe are being denied jobs and girls prevented from attending classes just because of their form of dress, such as the headscarf. In a report, Amnesty called on European governments to do more to clear prejudices against Islam. The report was focusing on Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Switzerland. It also blasted bans on face-covering veils or the wearing of religious symbols in schools in some European countries. Egypt Christians and Muslims grieve for Pope Shenouda
www.euronews.com Coptic Christians in Egypt are mourning the death of their patriarch, Pope Shenouda III. The 88-year-old spent 40 years leading Egypt's christian minority. Many people gathered at Cairo's Abbaseya Cathedral hoping to see the body. During his time in charge, Shenouda was also popular with Muslims and seen as a symbol of religious harmony. "I would like to say that, Muslims included, we all love each other and this was what he used to speak about. When he spoke, he didn't only speak of and for Christians but for all the Egyptian people and it wasn't just talk; this is what he planted and harvested. All Egyptians are mourning his death, it's a very difficult situation," one man said choking back tears. Mourners flocked to Egypt's main Coptic church after hearing of Shenouda's death. His passing comes at a time when many of the country's 10 million Christians feel vulnerable due to rising tension with Muslims and the resurgence of Islamic-based politics since the uprising last year. Despite this, a statement on the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party website expresses its condolences. Shenouda's funeral will be held on Tuesday. But one secretive group is doing just the opposite. They call themselves Muslims of America. They've established compounds throughout the rural US Members say they moved to the countryside to lead peaceful lives free of "Western decadence." But others say that doesn't tell the whole story. "Certainly, when you're in a rural area it enables you to better escape from the prying eyes of law enforcement," said CBN News consultant David Gartenstein-Ross. He says Muslims of America has close ties to a violent Pakistani group named Jamaat Al-Fuqra. Both groups are led by the same extremist cleric: Sheikh Mubarak Gilani. "Sheikh Gilani is an extremist figure known to be very much involved in the jihads against India, also known to be very much anti-Semitic," Gartenstein-Ross said. Gilani's images and messages are all over the Muslims of America Web site. He founded the group during a visit to Brooklyn in 1980. New reality show to document American Muslims
Reality TV welcomes a brand new program in the United States which follows the lives of American Muslims and makes its debut on Sunday. Aptly titled "All-American Muslim", the show documents five families living in Dearborn, Michigan, which happens to be one of the largest Arab-American communities in the country. The network in charge of the show, TLC channel, which produced shows like "John and Kate plus 8", says the aim of the show is to give a realistic perspective of Muslim culture. Members of the cast include a woman and her Irish Catholic fiancée who plans to convert to Islam, an event planner, and a high school football coach. Nader and Nawal Aoude are expectant newlyweds. Despite their enthusiasm, Nawal shares concerns they have about taking part in the show. "Being American-Muslims there is a watchful eye on the Muslim community and just that word in general, that word Muslim. So we were kind of nervous about the exposure." She hopes the show addresses common questions and misconceptions about her religion. "We're not here to represent Islam, were not here to represent anybody but ourselves, "I get questions for example, 'What does every color scarf mean? 'Like you know, when I wear different colors. A group of radical Muslims attacked police in the German city of Solingen on Tuesday during a far-right demonstration, injuring four.
