In the short 18 months Brian Moynihan has been in charge of Bank of America he has been a fiercely surprising financial divine wind. He settled anti-discrimination charges for pennies on the dollar. He settled SEC fraud charges for pennies on the dollar. And in both cases he deftly avoided criminal charges and not having to admit wrongdoing. Great victories and he has preserved face. I just had this thought while I was in the dojo and I had to share it with you. And it was about Bank of America. I don't think there is any question in anyone's mind, that Ken Lewis who built the behemoth that is Bank of America today was a grand master of the martial art of modern finance. I mean you look at Bank of America when Ken Lewis took his final massive bonus and waived goodbye. It was the largest single financial American institution in terms of assets. As well as the largest in terms of Bank Deposits, and of course the largest in terms of taxpayer bailouts... Ken Lewis' ambition makes him Sensei master, indeed... And for a good part of the time he was building that empire Brian Moynihan was his youthful apprentice, on the legal side of things for BofA. This required of the grasshopper great diligence and steadfast focus. And people had questions whether Brian could ever achieve in ambition the level of Master Lewis. I myself, had doubts. The largest US bank by assets reported a loss of $1.24 billion, or 16 cents a share, as it boosted provisions tied to faulty loans and litigation and wrote down the value of its mortgage unit. Excluding a goodwill charge, adjusted net income was 4 cents a share, less than the average estimate of 21 cents by 24 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Were they designed to placate a certain segment of his base, while actually continuing—or even expanding—many of Bush administration terrorism policies?

"Bridging human rights and development: the growing movement for economic and social rights" This talk covers the work of transnational organizations on economic and social rights, mapping the field, and teasing out convergences and divergences between human rights and development practice. Ignacio Saiz was appointed executive director of CESR in 2009, having served as the Center's research director since 2006. Prior to this, he was director of policy at the international secretariat of Amnesty International, where his responsibilities included overseeing the development of Amnesty's research, campaigning and advocacy on economic, social and cultural rights. Previous roles at Amnesty International have included deputy director of the Americas Program, policy coordinator and Central America researcher. He has also worked as a freelance human rights consultant for several other organizations in areas relating to sexuality and human rights, the prevention of torture and post-conflict accountability. Ignacio holds an LLM in international human rights law with distinction from the University of Essex and a BA degree in French, Spanish and Latin American literature from the University of Cambridge.
