The special was recorded live on 25 March 1983 before a studio audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California, and aired on NBC on 16 May 1983. The broadcast, produced by Suzanne de Passe, featured some of the greatest artists from the history of Motown Records, including Stevie Wonder, Four Tops, The Temptations, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, The Jackson Five, Michael Jackson, and more. Michael Jackson's rendition of his mega-hit "Billie Jean" is all the more memorable as it features his first public performance of the "moonwalk". "Billie Jean" is originally a single and track from the 1982 album, "Thriller", by Michael Jackson. The best-selling album of all time, "Thriller" was a worldwide success and is ranked #20 in Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. "Billie Jean" was written by Michael Jackson. The single was produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson and was originally released on Epic Records (SME). Motown Drumming: Drew Schultz, the drummer for The Four Tops, and drummer / percussionist with other Soul legends pays tribute to his favorite musicians: Uriel Jones, Richard "Pistol" Allen, Benny Benjamin, Spider Webb, Dennis Coffey, Eddie "Bongo" Brown, Jack Ashford, Joe Messina, James Jamerson, Bob Babbitt, Eddie Willis, Robert White, Joe Hunter, Johnny Griffith, Earl Van Dyke ... all collectively known as The Funk Brothers. This is an example of the percussive construction of the "Motown Sound," which often consisted of two drummers AND two percussionists. More videos to come!
