It's a demonstration aimed at solidifying the ideas presented in two earlier videos. If you haven't already, you should watch the whole set: 1) What is the magnetic field? www.youtube.com 2) Electricity & Magnetism Hand Rules (part one) www.youtube.com 3) How to build a simple electric motor, plus how it works. www.youtube.com The main idea here is that charges moving through a magnetic field experience a "push" perpendicular to the direction of their motion. This force is also dependent upon the direction of the magnetic field. The fact that the wire is stripped on only one side alternates the current from "on" to "off" every half rotation. So halfway through the spin, the ring coasts through until it gets current again receiving a "kick." It's a poor man's commutator. The particulars of this kick/force are discussed in the second video. Armed with the knowledge from the above videos, you should be able to troubleshoot most of the problems that arise. Faraday Motor demonstration
In the early 1800s, physicist Michael Faraday invented the first device to convert electrical energy into mechanical motion. This is an easily built version of his motor. The magnet sets up a magnetic field, and the electrical current through the screw sets up a separate electromagnetic field around the screw. The two fields react and the result is rotation.

1926 Armstead Snow Motor Vehicle
This screw-propelled vehicle was designed to cope with difficult snow and ice terrain. Instead of tracks, the vehicle is moved by the rotation of two horisontal cylinders fitted with a helical flange that engages with the snow surface. The Armstead Snow Motor was developed in the early 1920's. Leading Detroit automobile makers had organized a company entitled "Snow Motors Inc" to put out a machine that would negotiate the deepest snowdrifts at six to eight miles an hour. The vehicle consisted of a tractor power-plant mounted on two revolving cylinders instead of wheels.

Ryno Motors Invents World's First One Wheel Electric Scooter
After more than three years in the business, Vancouver-based start-up Ryno Motors has nearly finished its third and final design for a one-wheel self-balancing motor bike that's worthy of RoboCop. It's a sleek and sporty machine that, most importantly, stays upright and drives with ease. This electricity powered motorcycle has a range of about 30 miles and can hit a top speed of 25mph. Powered by LiFePo4 batteries, the motorcycle is expected to cost about $3500. The motorcycle features high capacity dual DC motors and controller boards, advanced solid-state motion sensors to maintain constant control of balance loop. All the electronic components inside have been sealed to prevent damage due to shocks. But now the Vancouver start-up faces a new, more daunting challenge: funding! "We're stuck right now," said founder Chris Hoffmann, a mechanical engineer with 15 years of experience in the automobile industry. "Investors love the idea but they don't know who the market is." Hoffmann has so far invested about $25000 of his own money engineering and building the prototype motorcycles with a mishmash of abundant, cheap parts scrounged from the robotics industry.
