Autodesk MotionBuilder - Motion Capture Production Pipeline
More information: eat3d.com In this DVD, Instructor Markus Hammarstedt goes through the entire pipeline of taking several motion capture data files and creating a complex final scene. He starts off by giving an overview of the UI and then shows how to export your character from Maya and get it into MotionBuilder. From there he goes into assigning the bones and creating the bind pose. Next, he assigns the markers to an actor and takes that actor to retarget the motion capture to the character. Markus then takes the raw Mocap animation and selects the sections to use in the scene and create clips out of them. He then takes the clips and blends them together to get a rough idea where they need to go and then fixes the timing to make everything look better. After that, he goes into character controllers and then the hard work of polishing the animations to look more natural. Finally, Markus shows how to take everything into UDK to create a full scene, complete with a matinee sequence with sounds, particles, and camera animations. This DVD is perfect for those who want to learn more about motionbuilder and how to create a complex production scene. About the Instructor: Markus Hammarstedt has been working with MotionBuilder for over 4 years. He has worked on such games as Bulletstorm, Terminator Salvation, and Bionic Commando Rearmed 2. Markus has worked for over 2 years at Epic Games / People Can Fly and is currently at Starbreeze working on an unannounced project.

All files used in this tutorial can be downloaded from blender.freemovies.co.uk Similar to the tutorial 'Importing Motion Capture Data (.bvh) Files and Setting Up a Simple Rig' but this time a complete skin is connected to the armature. The techniques used in this tutorial are simpler and shorter and there is less information about the bvh file format (you will have to look at the other tutorial for that). Key points - How to import a motion capture file (bvh). How to scale and rotate the resultant armature. How to connect chains of bones (arms, legs and head and neck). How to modify the animation using the dope sheet and how to save multiple actions using the action editor. How to set the armature into a T-pose ready to connect to a skin. Autodesk 2012 and Kinect Motion Capture
we have made an example clip which shows the viewport 2 of Autodesk Maya 2012 rendering and the use of Microsoft Kinect with the autodesk packages. For this, we used Brekel's Kinect software together with the Brekel Motionbuilder device. About Autodesk Viewport 2 : It's amazing what they have done in autodesk 2012 The render engine is amazing and the rendertime of this clip took about 3 minutes max. in 1280*720. So that's amazing. 1 minor point i have to say, The viewport doesn't handle transparency of skinned meshes all too well. Something to keep in mind. About Brekels Software. the beginning of the clip was made with Brekels Kinect software 0.42 I had to disable the animation of the lower arms and the wrist, there it caused serious flipping in the arms. After i've contacted Brekel about it, he updated the software immediately to version 0.43 The dancing part was done with Brekel kinect software 0.43 which resulted in a more usuable rig. So my thanks for making this clip goes out to : Autodesk - due to the major improvements they have done with the 2012 lineup. As well for Maya as Motionbuilder Brekel - For making the Kinect ussuable to use as a standalone capture software as well as a great motionbuilder plugin. One thing to keep in mind : Motionbuilder 2012 has issues characterizing bvh and target it to your character. Use Motionbuilder 2011 for this till autodesk fixes this. The character used is Target View's own Design and is also availlable for the Poser Platform.

Kinect MotionBuilder realtime motion capture device
Update: Now available at www.brekel.com Here's a quick preview of some experiments on streaming a skeleton from a Microsoft Kinect into MotionBuilder, in realtime. A base application acquires a color and depth image from the Kinect and processes this into a 3D pointcloud. (Not shown here but these can be dumped to disk as polygon objects as well) PrimeSense's NITE is used to recognize the user and track a skeleton. It then streams that data over TCP (could be done over a network connection) into MotionBuilder. Using a custom device plugin the regular MotionBuilder toolset can then be used to map this onto a character. All still very alpha and proof of concept at the moment, but hey it kinda works and is fun More info at: www.brekel.com Note, this all runs on 30+ fps on a core2quad, the screencapture software had difficulty with it though.
