Highlights as Montpellier win title amid chaotic scenes in France
Montpellier claimed the first French league title in their history after winning 2-1 at Auxerre on an extraordinary final day of the season on Sunday, after a game twice delayed due to protests by the home fans. Second-placed Paris Saint-Germain did all they could by winning 2-1 at Lorient, and the delays at Auxerre meant that Rene Girard's side had to endure a nervous wait before their title success was confirmed. Montpellier finished the season three points clear of PSG in the final standings, which gave the southern club - 14th in Ligue 1 last season - their first major honour since the 1990 French Cup. "I think it's deserved," said Montpellier coach Girard amid scenes of jubilation on the pitch at Auxerre following the final whistle. "It was a huge fight right until the end. Looking at the number of points, you have to say that the three teams at the top (Montpellier, PSG and Lille) have had extraordinary seasons." Montpellier were in early trouble when Auxerre scored in the 20th minute at Stade Abbe Deschamps, with Olivier Kapo heading home from a corner. A defeat was the only means by which Montpellier could have been denied the title but they equalised in the 32nd minute when John Utaka converted a low right-wing cross from Souleymane Camara. The Auxerre fans' protest at their relegation -- which saw them throw tennis balls and toilet rolls onto the pitch -- began at the start of the second period and forced the players to return to the changing rooms. French league leaders Montpellier can take a step closer to their first ever Ligue 1 title with victory against Valenciennes. Despite losing 2-1 away to Lorient on Sunday, Montpellier still lead PSG by two points. Rene Girard's team are the second-best defensive side in Ligue 1 this season and coming up against the third-worst attacking team should point to a home win for Montpellier and the crucial three points. Nice midfielder Anthony Mounier is shaping as his team's saviour as the southern French club try to avoid relegation. With six games left this season, Nice are currently 14th in Ligue 1, four spots away from the relegation zone. That gap is only one point, however, meaning a win against last-placed Auxerre on Saturday will be crucial for Nice in their quest to play in France's top division next season.

Montpellier have never won a French title before, but stand three points clear of big-spending PSG with just two games to go each. They will win the Ligue 1 crown if they win at home to Lille on Sunday and PSG fail to beat Rennes. In case of a draw, Montpellier will be champions if Rennes win at the Parc des Princes stadium. But Lille are on a run of five consecutive wins in Ligue 1, and Montpellier coach Rene Girard has to combat midfield ace Eden Hazard. "I always take Messi as an example," said Girard, who won't obsess about Hazard. "They are talented players, but we don't want to lose our collective strength and we'd be taking a risk if we only focus on Hazard."
