Shigeru Miyamoto reflects on his legacy and retirement
The creator of Mario, Zelda and Donkey Kong video game characters had the industry buzzing when an interview was published by Wired earlier in December in which he hinted at retirement. But the 59-year-old game designer told the Associated Press through an interpreter that he was simply misunderstood. He said that while he has no plans to quit Nintendo, he is working to prepare the famed Japanese company's younger game designers to take over eventually for him and others in the old guard. Miyamoto currently holds the title of Manager of Nintendo's Entertainment Analysis and Development division. His creations appear in three recently-released titles: "Mario Kart 7", "Super Mario 3D Land" and "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword". Miyamoto expects his characters to outlive him. Nintendo's first foray into HD will be when its Wii U console is released, likely late in 2012. But Miyamoto says he's simply not been interested in photo-realistic graphics as a game designer. Miyamoto says he is working on several upcoming games including "Pikmin 3" for the Wii U, "Luigi's Mansion 2" for the 3DS and an undisclosed original title.

If you play a fair amount of home video games, one thing you'll notice is that they all have a certain general form. Just like movies all have a repeated basic structure that has been crafted over the last 80 years, video games also have a conventional mold that parallels audience expectation. And the guy who really defined that structure, the DW Griffith, the Orsen Wells of video games, so to speak, was Shigeru Miyamoto.

Father of My Childhood is a tribute to Shigeru Miyamoto and a show of appreciation for all of the joy that his creations have brought into my life and the lives of so many others. This video could easily contain footage from everything from arcade Donkey Kong to Pikmin, but because this is the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda series and because The Legend of Zelda has been such a significant influence in my life, this first version of the video contains only Zelda clips. As child and teenager I saved princesses with Mario, discovered myself as I discovered Hyrule, and grew as Link grew. It was through the work of Shigeru Miyamoto that I discovered my own passion: creating moving and meaningful video games that can cause others to grow and discover as well. I can only hope to touch one person's life the way that Mr. Miyamoto has touched mine. May 15, 1996 the day before E3 was to kick off @ the LA Convention Center. Nintendo invited the Press from all over the world to the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown LA It was the unveiling of "Nintendo 64"! Friends and I were waiting in the lobby before the presentation when we noticed an entourage of Japanese businessmen. One of them was the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto!! They were heading towards the restroom. The night before I couldn't sleep at all because of the excitement. We were going to be THE FIRST to witness the Nintendo 64 and a new Mario game ! I packed my knapsack with few things including some games incase I ran into some game celebs :) As Mr. Miyamoto and his collegues made it out of the restroom - we approached him and asked if he could sign my Yoshi's Island (Super NES) cart. Without question, Mr. Miyamoto was obliged to sign the back of my cart. Not only did he sign it and dated it. But he also drew a Mario headshot ! My friend had his picture taken and Mr. Miyamoto was on his way to the presentation. Truly and awesome experience! Also in the clip are photos of my two signed Nintendo carts. In 2002, I ran into Mr. Miyamoto again after he gave a keynote address before E3. He signed and dated my copy of Zelda: Ocarina of Time! Thanks Mr. Miyamoto - you're one of the grestest!

Asturias premia a Shigeru Miyamoto o la revolución japonesa de los videojuegos
fr.euronews.com El Premio Príncipe de Asturias de Comunicación y Humanidades 2012 se le ha concedido a Shigeru Miyamoto creador japonés de videojuegos. El Premio consiste en 50.000 euros y una escultura diseñada por Joan Miró. Shigeru Miyamoto es un figura revolucionaria del mundo de los videojuegos y es el creador del personaje Super Mario de la firma Nintendo. A Miyamoto se le conoce también como el "Spielberg de los video juegos". Nacido el 16 de noviembre de 1952 en Sonobe, Japón, Miyamoto se aficionó desde muy joven a la música, el dibujo y las marionetas. Estudió Artes y Oficios e ingeniería industrial. Su primer personaje fue Donkey Kong, que permitió a Nintendo implantarse en EEUU, pero su obra de más éxito internacional es sin duda Super Mario. Miyamoto además ha concebido "La leyenda de Zenda" y ha colaborado en la creación de consolas. Su éxito comercial se traduce en millones de videojuegos vendidos en todo el mundo.
