Kongsberg NSM anti-ship missile test
Video by Norway's Kongsberg of a flight test of its Naval Strike Missile (NSM), basis of teh Joint Strike Missile under development for the F-35 JSF. Here the fire-and-forget missile is launched from land at the Pt Mugu, Calif., test range and is filmed by a chase aircraft as sea-slims a few feet above the Pacific, flying over an island to acquire and attack a target ship on the otther side. Kongsberg says this mission profile gave the NSM's imaging-infrared seeker just 1.5 seconds to acquire and identify the ship as its pre-programmed target.
IAF to counter new missiles
The Israel Air Force is drafting a new operational doctrine aimed at improving its ability to confront the proliferation of advanced surface-to-air missile systems throughout the region. The plan called "White Paper," is under development by the IAF's Operations Division and includes an analysis of each front that Israel faces -- Syria, Lebanon and Gaza -- as well as the different SAM systems that are located in the various areas of operations. The White Paper plan also includes a number of layers -- from the development of hard kills (explosive) systems to the formulation of new flight guidelines depending on the area of operations.

India has successfully tested a new long-range missile. The Agni V has a range of more than 5000km and is capable of delivering a nuclear warhead anywhere in regional China, and countries outside Asia. Prerna Suri reports.

The test firing the Agni five missile was postponed after bad weather conditions yesterday. The test took place today from Wheeler Island in Odisha. The missile has a range of 5000 kilometres, a marked improvement over India's current missiles which can hit potential enemy targets over a distance of just 3500 kilometres. DRDO plans to conduct more such tests of the missile over the next one year after studying and analyzing the parameters achieved in each subsequent trial. The Agni V is capable of carrying nuclear warheads and will be crucial for India's defence against China. US surrounding Russia with missile defense system?
The US missile defense shield based in Eastern Europe has been under heavy criticism from Russia. The shield - which is being put in place to protect NATO countries - has Russian officials questioning the United State's intentions. Russia believes the US defense system is aimed at their missiles and said the US must address their concerns or they will be forced to launch a preemptive strike to put an end to the defense shield. Japan wants missile shield against N.Korean rockets
North Korea has announced it will launch a rocket next month, which will put a satellite into orbit. But the US and its allies see the plans as counter to international diplomatic efforts to deal with the reclusive state's nuclear programme - and are worried the technology could be used to develop long range missiles in the future. It could also potentially violate UN Security Council resolutions, and threatens last month's deal between North Korea and the Washington. Under this, Pyonyang was to freeze its uranium weapons program and its long-range missile activities - in return for American food aid. Japan's has responded by deploying its own missile defense system to shoot down any rocket threatening its territory. 5/10/2012 - Second-Generation Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System Completes Successful Intercept Flight Test The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) and US Navy sailors aboard the USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) successfully conducted a flight test of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system, resulting in the first intercept of a short-range ballistic missile target over the Pacific Ocean by the Navy's newest Missile Defense interceptor, the Standard Missile -- 3 (SM-3) Block 1B. At 8:18 pm Hawaiian Standard Time (2:18 am EDT May 10) the target missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, located on Kauai, Hawaii. The target flew on a northwesterly trajectory towards a broad ocean area of the Pacific Ocean. Following target launch, the USS LAKE ERIE detected and tracked the missile with its onboard AN/SPY-1 radar. The ship, equipped with the second-generation Aegis BMD 4.0.1 weapon system, developed a fire control solution and launched the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IB interceptor. The USS LAKE ERIE continued to track the target and sent trajectory information to the SM-3 Block IB interceptor in-flight. The SM-3 maneuvered to a point in space, as designated by the fire control solution, and released its kinetic warhead. The kinetic warhead acquired the target, diverted into its path, and, using only the force of a direct impact, engaged and destroyed the threat in a hit-to-kill intercept. Via Wired.com: "A key congressional panel is demanding that the Pentagon start work on a missile defense battery on America's East Coast, all to make sure an Iranian missile doesn't wipe out New York, Philly or DC in the next three years. But Tehran's longest-range missile can't come anywhere near American shores. And the Defense Department already has a plan in motion to launch missile interceptors from Europe, just in case Iran somehow makes a giant technological leap in the near future. In its markup of next year's Pentagon budget, the House Armed Services Committee's Strategic Forces panel inserted a provision that "require[s] the Director, Missile Defense Agency to develop a plan for the deployment of an East Coast site to be operational not later than the end of 2015." India's self reliance in defence capabilities is set for a major shot in the arm. Defence Minister AK Antony will hand over the first batch of Akash surface-to-air missiles to the Indian Air Force in Hyderabad on Saturday. He will also commission Tal, an advanced indigenously developed lightweight torpedo, to the Indian Navy. The weapon systems will greatly enhance the air force and navy's strike capabilities. HMS Diamond Fires Sea Viper Missile for the First Time
With a flash of orange and an ear-splitting bang HMS Diamond has proved her fighting mettle by testing her missile system off the Outer Hebrides. The third of the Royal Navy's cutting edge Type-45 destroyers blasted her missile out of the silo at three times the speed of sound, obliterating the jet drone target out of the sky. The successful firing of the Sea Viper system means that HMS Diamond is now ready to take her place as a fully operational warship, capable of deploying anywhere across the world.

The launch comes less than a week after Islamabad's main adversary India tested a long-range ballistic missile of its own.
