Mexico's Drug War
The Mexican Drug War is an ongoing armed conflict taking place among rival drug cartels fighting each other for regional control, and Mexican government forces seeking to combat drug trafficking. However, the government's principal goal has been to put down the drug-related violence that was raging between different rival drug cartels in Mexico before any military intervention was made.[27] In addition, the Mexican government has claimed that their primary focus is on dismantling the powerful drug cartels, rather than on drug trafficking prevention, which is left to US functionaries. Although Mexican drug cartels, or drug trafficking organizations, have existed for several decades, they have become more powerful since the demise of Colombia's Cali and Medellín cartels in the 1990s. Mexican drug cartels now dominate the wholesale illicit drug market in the United States.[31] Arrests of key cartel leaders, particularly in the Tijuana and Gulf cartels, have led to increasing drug violence as cartels fight for control of the trafficking routes into the United States. The US Department of Justice estimates that wholesale earnings from illicit drug sales range from $13.6 billion to $48.4 billion annually. Given its geographic location, Mexico has long been used as a staging and transshipment point for narcotics, illegal immigrants and contraband destined for US markets from Mexico, South America and elsewhere. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Colombia's Pablo Escobar was the ...

Michoacan, Mexico
Michoacan has great colonial cities, ancient crafts and spectacular natural events. In Sierra Chincua 40 million butterflies sleep on top of each other in the Winter to save energy. In Spring they wake up and mate. All males die after mating. Females travel 3000 miles back to Canada to drop their eggs and also die. This alone is worth a visit! Morelia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 1000 historic buildings. At Villa Montana' spa compulsive travelers can de-stress with a special chocolate bath. Anyone looking for a mate hangs an image of St. Anthony upside down at El Miguelito restaurant until a mate is found. This is one of the best social scenes in town. Street food in Michoacan is exceptional: Gazpacho a meal of chopped fruit and vegetables with hot sauce topped with chunks of cheese is everyone's favorite. Pazcuaro is renowned for its crafts. Mario makes wooden bowls the ancient way using only colors from local ingredients. It takes one liter of cow's urine, 1000 ladybugs, 50 tortillas, 200 worms, 10 pounds of cheese and 2 years of Mario's work to finish his bowls selling for $5000! The Michoacan Pacific coast is dramatic and spectacular: Hawaii with no tourists. Endangered turtles travel thousands of miles to mate and bury their eggs here. Forty years ago, poachers raided these beaches until an ancient tribe called the Nagua, became guardian of the turtles. At night we follow the turtles laying the eggs which are brought to a safe compound. Eggs buried 45 days ...
