Shocking Video Shows Mexican Immigrant Beaten to Death By US Border Patrol Agents. 1 of 2
DemocracyNow.org - A new PBS documentary exposes the tasing and beating death of a Mexican immigrant by US border agents in California, and has renewed scrutiny of what critics call a culture of impunity. In May 2010, 32-year-old Anastasio Hernández Rojas was caught trying to enter the United States from Mexico near San Diego. He had previously lived in the United States for 25 years and was the father of five US-born children. But instead of deportation, Hernández Rojas' detention ended in his death. A number of border officers were seen beating him, before one tasered him at least five times. During the incident, he was handcuffed and hogtied. He died shortly afterward. The agents say they confronted Hernández Rojas because he became hostile and resisted arrest. But previously undisclosed videos recorded by eyewitnesses on their cell phones show a different story. The footage was obtained by reporter John Carlos Frey and aired in a national television special last Friday night, as part of a joint investigation by the PBS broadcast ,"Need to Know," and the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute. Frey joins us to discuss the exposé, along with Hernández Rojas' widow, María Puga, and translator, Christian Ramírez. From guns to the media, Mexican drug cartels have turned to new and unusual tactics to intimidate their rivals. Videos of drug-related massacres have been sent to news networks and posted online. The gangs have also tried to win support through public displays of strength. The Mexican
A clumsy criminal is put in a position where he not only has to save his own skin, but that of his girlfriend in this comedy with strong undercurrents of romance. Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt) is a low-level Mafia "mechanic" whose ineptitude is countered by frequent (but unpredictable) bursts of dumb luck. Jerry's girlfriend Samantha (Julia Roberts) wants him to get out of the business, and after his latest blunder lands capo Arnold Margolese (Gene Hackman) in jail, so does mid-level crime kingpin Bernie Nayman (Bob Balaban). But Bernie insists that Jerry do one last errand for the mob before they let him find employment elsewhere — he has to go to Mexico and recover a rare and very valuable pistol, which is said to be cursed. While Samantha objects to Jerry taking the assignment, he isn't in much of a position to argue; Jerry heads south of the border, while Samantha, in a huff, sets out for Las Vegas. Once in Mexico, Jerry finds the pistol easily enough, but making his way back to the States proves to be an unexpected challenge. Meanwhile, Jerry's superiors want insurance that he'll return with the goods, so they hire Leroy (James Gandolfini), a hitman, to kidnap Samantha and hold her hostage until Jerry comes back. However, Samantha and Leroy quickly strike up a friendship, and she soon learns the gunman has a sensitive side he doesn't show to the world — along with a few other secrets. Mexican tribal region battles drought
A severe drought in northern Mexico, said to be the worst in 70 years, has left many thousands in the area without enough food and drinking water. The Raramuri indigenous people, living in the highlands of northern Chihuahua state, have long been battling malnutrition, and a lack of rainfall will further worsen the situation. Emergency aid is beginning to reach the region but fears of a humanitarian crisis still loom. Al Jazeera's Franc Contreras reports from San Ignacio, Mexico.

Mexican inmates escape after prison riot
Officials in Northern Mexico say at least 30 members of a drugs gang escaped from prison during a riot on Sunday. They say inmates from the so-called 'Zeta' gang started the fight. Fourty-four prisoners from a rival gang were murdered. Adam Raney reports.
