The Metra Evening Rush On The "RaceTrack", Berwyn, IL. 8-11-09.
This is the entire Metra rush on the BNSF Chicago Subdivision. A time when the line is dominated by commuter trains racing between Chicago and Aurora, IL. Make sure you check out the previous video showing freight and Amtrak action before and after the rush. Trains seen between 4:20PM and 7:30PM. (c) 9th Street Productions.

The Best of Metra, Plus Amtrak 145, at Tower A-2, Chicago, 13.02.12
Enjoy the action of the early evening Metra commuter rush on the Milwaukee District North and West Lines and the Union Pacific West Line, as well as Amtrak's Hiawatha Service and Empire Builder. Light power and empty equipment moves to and from the coach yards to Union or Ogilvie stations, F40C #614, "class unit" F40PH #100, the Metra UP-North Line club / lounge car, and Amtrak Phase III Heritage P42DC #145 are all seen, showing off the best of Metra operations on the north side. All of this is framed by the Chicago skyline, Pennsylvania Railroad and Chicago & North Western signalling, and Tower A-2's complicated interlocking. You can hear the almost century-old pneumatic switch machines operating as the towerman lines up dozens of trains through the plant. ~Thanks for watching!~
CP / IC&E and Metra in Elgin, Illinois on New Years Eve 2011
After spending the New Year's Eve morning at Franklin Park, I moved further down the Metra Milwaukee District- West Line to its terminal in Elgin (on weekends, no trains go to Big Timber Road). My goal was to catch Canadian Pacific's train 272, the Nahant (Iowa) - Chicago (Bensenville Yard) manifest, and its westbound cousin, train 273. These freights were formerly run by the Iowa, Chicago & Eastern, and with a lot of IC&E / DM&E power running these trains most days, you'd never know the line is back in CP ownership. Also seen here is the building that used to be the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin interurban's Elgin Substation, the Metra MD-W Line, and Metra F40C #611! Train descriptions follow: Train 1: Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern SD40-2 #6364, the "City of Sleepy Eye", and CEFX SD40M-2 #3121 (a rebuilt SD45- note the original Flexicoil trucks) lead Canadian Pacific's eastbound train 272 toward Bensenville. The signals in the distance control the single-track segment over the Fox River Bridge. Looks like the train almost nailed a couple people crossing the tracks! I guess they just couldn't wait.... Train 2: A 7-car Metra MD-W Line train, led by cabcar #8514 and with MP36PH-3S #426 on the rear, passes another train tied up in the Elgin Yard, and makes its first inbound stop at National Street. This station used to serve the Elgin National Watch Co. across the river from here- the site is now a casino. Train 3: Out of the fog, the CP 273 train heads west over the Fox River and ...

Union Pacific and Metra Action at Geneva, Illinois on New Year's Eve 2011
After a morning at Franklin Park and midday at Elgin, by way of the Pace Suburban Bus route 801, I ended up in Geneva on (where else?) Union Pacific's Geneva Subdivision, the ex-C&NW triple-track (though here only two tracks) main line west out of Chicago. If you like coal trains, you'll love this video. Three in maybe an hour. Train 1: UP AC4400CWs #7225 and 7185 lead a loaded coal drag east past the Geneva station. UP AC6000 #7309 pushes as the DPU. Train 2: Two SD70Ms and an ES44AC are on the point of a westbound ARMN unit reefer train, meeting a slow eastbound at the signals just past Geneva station. Train 3: Four motors- ES44AC #7632, SD70M #4129, SD70ACe #8377 and SD70M #4598, are eastbound with a Z-train with UPS in the consist. Train 4: A westbound coal train approaches, coming downgrade across the Fox River. AC4400CWs #5862 and 6857 lead, with 5767 on the rear. Train 5: Yet another coal train, this one on the right-hand main, passes through Geneva. UP 5681 and 6529 lead, with an AC6000 on the rear. Train 6: F40PH #138, the "Village of Lombard", blows across the street and to a stop at Geneva with an 8-car train, nearly meeting the end of the coal train. Train 7: Three SD70Ms run west with a long manifest. Train 8: Meeting the end of the manifest, the same set of equipment as the earlier Metra outbound arrives back at Geneva from Elburn, heading into the city, as a crowd of New Year's partiers waits to board. ~Thanks for watching!~
Metra, Amtrak (Plus Ph. IV Heritage), BNSF & CSX Action on the 'Racetrack', 09.02.11
A total of 17 trains (2 Amtraks, 5 freights and 10 Metras) pass by the Congress Park and La Grange Road stations on BNSF's Chicago Subdivision 'Racetrack' over the course of about an hour and a half, beginning around 6pm at Congress Park. A couple times, I followed the rarely-used connection tracks from BNSF to the Indiana Harbor Belt main that passes underneath between the two stations, to find no traffic there- this did however, result in interesting angles on the trains. It would get dry describing all the Metra trains, so here are the (mostly non-Metra) catches that stand out, ordered by video timestamp: -- 2:45 : Westbound Amtrak train #383, the Illinois Zephyr, consists of P42DC #32 and a uniform set of 5 Horizon cars as it passes Congress Park and meets an inbound Metra in the distance, slowing for its stop at La Grange. -- 4:13 : The Chicago-bound California Zephyr is running about 3 hours late, led by P42DCs #137, Phase IV Heritage unit #184, and #6 as it passes Congress Park and crosses over to the center main just east. -- 5:08 : An inbound Metra BNSF Line train is pushed by one of Metra's two Operation Lifesaver units, F40PHM-2 #214, seen from the northern connector track to the IHB. -- 5:32 : An eastbound BNSF intermodal train is led by a GEVO and an ex-Santa Fe 'warbonnet' Dash-9 as it rolls across the Indiana Harbor Belt. -- 7:11 : Blowing its horn to alert some, um... wayward pedestrians, an eastbound stack train is led by two SD70MACs, #8985 and 9506, the ...
METRA is Busy in Bensenville
I think I caught about eight METRA commuter trains, traveling both direction, at the York Road grade crossing in Bensenville. This one is fun because of the different power involved.
Amtrak, Metra, & CTA Action Around Downtown Chicago, Illinois July 17, 2011
Filmed on July 17, 2011. Set to HD. Before I had to take the train back home to Ohio I decided to film some action just outside of Chicago Union station. I will admit my camera work is not the best for some of these clips but, I was still getting used to this new camera. Anyways Ross (94amtrak) his dad & I found a great spot near the river that had a great view of the skyline and the tracks. We got a horn show from a friendly Metra engineer at 4:46 in the video. We clapped afterward for horn show from the engineer so, sorry if you can hear claping in the video. After this it was off to Union station were I boarded the eastbound Amtrak Capitol Limited. Metra BNSF Line Evening Rush at Brookfield, Illinois on 17.02.12
Not every train of course, but quite a few of the "dinkies" of the Metra BNSF Line's evening rush on the "Racetrack", at Brookfield, Illinois, and also with a few shots at Downers Grove. Also included is a high-priority intermodal train that managed to sneak through going eastbound just as the rush period traffic on the line gets heavy. An absolutely spectacular sunset bathed many of the trains in a red glow. Enjoy!
METRA Change of Schedule
This was recorded in Mount Prospect Illinois, during the late afternoon of March 17, 2012. The "express" is, what I think, is the train that killed a pesetrian a couple of minutes later in Arlington Heights. The second train came in as usual, then was held, then discharged all passengers in Mount Prospect. After twenty minutes the train slowly moved up the track. This was unusual to witness as I have never seen 600 passengers leave a train at a suburban station. I'm very used to the large number of folks at the downtown terminals but have never seen a mob of people leave a train like this. All METRA traffic on this line was held up in both directions while the accident in Arlington Heights was being investigated.
METRA In Snowstorm
Two different METRA commuter trains move thropugh Elmhurst Illinois during a snow storm. First up is a inbound which mysteriously stops just est of the depot, after picking up the usual riff-raff in Elmhurst. The next train is a westbound METRA that I almost missed as a meet. I like the way this one turned out. Please give it a view and comment.

UP at Oak Park and Metra at Winnetka, Illinois, 29.03.12
Union Pacific SD70Ms 5211 and 4682, with SD9043MAC 8186, lead a manifest through Oak Park, Illinois, past the CTA Green Line's Harlem & Lake terminal, into Chicago just before the Metra rush begins here. Later that day at the northern suburb of Winnetka, some action on the Metra Union Pacific North Line.
Metra Milwaukee District-North Line at Fox Lake, Illinois, Sunday, 10.09.11
Two outbound (northward from Chicago) trains arrive at the terminus of Metra's Milwaukee District North Line in Fox Lake, Illinois. The first train is led by MP36PH-3S #425, which comes through the coach yard and into the depot, unloading its passengers. With Fox Lake itself in the background, the train of 8 cars reverses onto a yard lead. A conductor throws manual switches as the train backs into the coach yard. MP36PH-3S #414 is on the point of the second train, an express (one of two on Sundays that skips minor stops) from Chicago, into the Fox Lake depot. This area is in the lake-dotted Illinois-Wisconsin border region, at the end of the Fox Lake Branch- this is all former Milwaukee Road trackage, as the sign on the depot attests to. Upon its formation, Metra took the branch over from MILW (along with most of the rest of Chicagoland's commuter trains). One Canadian Pacific local job (very sporadically), and Wisconsin & Southern road freights now use the Fox Lake Branch (at night), which continues northwest of here, owned by W&S outright, to Janesville, Wisconsin. It joins the CP Milwaukee - Chicago main line to the east at Rondout Tower. ~Thanks for watching!~
METRA At Villa Park
Four METRA trains move through the Villa Park Station at Ardmore Avenue. There is a little variety in the video with equipment, people, and the station. I changed up camera positions as the trains came in. Towards the end is a METRA & Union Pacific freight meet. Listen for the new warning commands and watch for the warning display.
Metra Electric, South Shore & More at Kensington Junction in a Blizzard! 20.01.12
Metra's Electric District, the South Shore Line, South Shore Freight, Amtrak, BNSF, and (almost) NS and even Conrail made an appearance today during a blizzard that dumped over half a foot of powdery snow in several hours on Chicagoland. I took Metra Electric to 115th St/Kensington, where Kensington Junction is located. The South Shore Line crosses over 3 CN / IC freight (and Amtrak) tracks and one Metra track there, however, the first scene is seen from the train, at the small CN - NS interchange yard at 91st St. Here, an NS freight sits in the yard with ex-Conrail SD50 #5420! Also, a BNSF coal train waits, a GEVO and two SD70MACs on the point. The train I am riding departs 91st St/Chesterfield, and makes a stop at 95th St/Chicago State University, crossing under the NS-BRC-CRL bridge in between. Later, I arrived at Kensington, where several rush-period trains head to and from Blue Island or University Park, and of course the South Shore Line trains are seen heading across the diamonds for Northern Indiana. One South Shore train skips the station here- it is an express run not stopping until Gary. This foreshadows the discontinuance of service here by the South Shore. Construction work is going on here to reroute South Shore trains through the junction, thus avoiding conflicts with Metra and CN and minimizing delays. The trains will still stop at 55th-56th-57th St/Hyde Park, however. Meanwhile, two trains on CN's ex-Illinois Central Chicago Sub had been waiting their ...
Metra and Union Pacific at Oak Park, River Forest & Maywood- With New HD Camera- 27.12.11
Train 1: At Oak Park, an outbound Metra / Union Pacific- West Line train with 6 cars, one an ex-CNW Pullman, blows past the Oak Park Avenue stop on CTA's Green Line as an 'L' train to Ashland/63rd departs. F40PH #150 leads. Train 2: Now the location is just east of the Maywood Metra station, where an inbound UP-W Line train zips across First Ave and approaches River Forest. F40PH #175, the "Village of Worth" pushes. Train 3: Now at CP Vale in River Forest, the location where Union Pacific's ex-Chicago & Northwestern main line widens going eastbound from two tracks to three, a hot Union Pacific intermodal train takes the middle main and passes the pretty old River Forest station. Almost-brand-new ES44AC #7899 and flared-radiator SD70M #5078 lead. Also nearly-new, SD70ACe #8461 pushes in DPU mode. The bridge in the background is a rarely-used CN line, the ex-WC, exx-Soo main into Chicago. Train 4: Looking under the Soo Line bridge toward downtown Chicago, another outbound Metra train, this one 7 cars led by F40PH #128, arrives at River Forest on its way out of the city. Train 5: Norfolk Southern C40-8 #8310, C40-9W #9711, UP SD70M #4520 and NS C40-9W #9420 lead a run-through UP/NS manifest east toward Chicago. ~Thanks for watching!~
Metra's Rock Island District on a Sunday: Gresham, Morgan Park & Blue Island
On my (leisurely!) way down to Blue Island today, I filmed Metra's Rock Island District in a few locations. First, while waiting at 95th St-Longwood Manor for CRL's Sunday morning "road freight" (which I never ended up seeing after waiting a couple hours), I caught the second inbound train of the day from a distance as it swings north from the Beverly Branch onto the main line at Gresham. From here, the climb of the Main Line from ground level to grade-separation is quite apparent! The two tracks to the right are a wye connecting CRL's ex-Rock Island freight main with the Metra line- a long time ago, there was a diamond from that line to the Beverly Branch here. Later, after having given up on the CRL job, I set up again at the nicely-restored 111th Street depot in Morgan Park and caught the same set of equipment as seen in the first shot, now outbound after having turned at La Salle Street Station. It is seen in the distance stopping at 103rd St and 107th St before approaching 111th St, stations on the Beverly Branch being every 4 blocks apart. Another set of bilevels, also powered by an MP36PH-3S, departs the 115th St station in the distance and stops at 111th St. I headed later to Blue Island, where the same set of equipment seen outbound earlier is now inbound as is passes through Western Avenue Junction, crosses the Cal-Sag Channel, and ducks under Western Ave. The junction is the southern counterpart to Gresham, where the branch again joins the main, and is ...
Rare Video - Metra Bi-Levels Pass on CP rails in Gurnee Illinois 1996
Two Metra Bi-Levels leased by Amtrak pass each other on the CP Railroad CM division in Gurnee Illnois on the Sunday after Thanksgiving in 1996. They are being used temporarily for Hiawatha service between Chicago and Milwaukee. The WB Amtrak Empire Builder also makes a cameo appearance racing towards Milwaukee with F40s in the lead.

Train 1: A run-through CSX grain train with some big GE power rolls past the Downers Grove station eastward. CSX AC4400 #244, AC6000 "Diversity in Motion" unit #5000, and C40-8W #7896 are on the point. Train 2: A huge lashup of Norfolk Southern and BNSF power head up a westbound manifest, meeting the CSX grainer. Two NS Dash-9s, an NS SD70M-2, and two BNSF Dash-9s, one an ex-ATSF "Warbonnet", the other a "pumpkin" in H2 paint, are on the point of the relatively short train. Train 3: BNSF C44-9Ws #4677 and 4425 lead a long freight on Main 2 toward Chicago. Amazingly, this train has another Dash-9 on the rear in DPU mode! Train 4: Amtrak P42DC #65 rushes east for Chicago with the 'Carl Sandburg', train #382. Oddly, today the train is running with Superliner coaches. Train 5: An outbound Metra train arrives. MP36PH-3S #403 leads. Train 6: Three Dash-9s, one in H1 paint, and a GEVO run a fast intermodal / autorack combo train westward. UP, CSX, Metra and CTA on the West Side of Chicago on 01.09.12
Some action from Union Pacific, CSX, Metra and even the CTA 'L' trains on a clear, winter day on the West Side of Chicago. We start off at the Keeler Avenue engine shop and yard. This tiny yard and the engine shops, which house and maintain the Metra units that run on UP lines, as well as some UP freight locos, are all that is left of a much larger Chicago & North Western facility that used to be here. Now, the few yard tracks left serve local industries clustered around the area, and switch jobs such as the one here with UP MP15AC #1488, put together cars from these spurs for a local to bring to Proviso Yard. The engine facilities here have their own, UP-employees-only Metra platforms, where an inbound Metra UP-W Line train stops before meeting the switch job at the bridge over Pulaski Road. F40PH-2 #156, the 'Village of Barrington', pushes. The Chicago Transit Authority's Lake Street Elevated on the Green Line, parallels the UP main a couple blocks to the south. Here, an outbound train of 2400-series Boeing-Vertol 'L' cars, (the lead two are also used in work service) stops in the distance at Kedzie, then Conservatory, before pulling in to the Pulaski stop. Later, seen from the Central stop on the Green Line, an eastbound UP manifest, led by SD90/43MAC #8043 and C41-8W #9401, heads further into the city, probably to be interchanged with CSX. Harlem/Lake- and 63rd/Cottage Grove- bound Green Line trains pass each other here as well. The old C&NW signal bridge is ...
Metra Evening Rush at North Canal St, Chicago, plus Amtrak, 02.03.12
Lots of action during a typical evening rush period on the north side of Chicago Union Station, also featuring the trains of Metra's Union Pacific lines overhead. F40C #611, a UP MP15 switching in the Ogilvie station approach tracks overhead, deadhead moves of Metra's Heritage Corridor trains from the coach yards, and Amtrak's Hiawatha Service and Empire Builder also make appearances. Enjoy!
Metra UP-N Train #341 Departs OTC with Private Club Car, 02.03.12
Metra F40PH #119, the 'Village of Cary' leads Union Pacific North Line train #341 (the "One Percent Express", as I call it.. lol..) north out of Track 8 at Ogilvie Transportation Center (North Western Station). The private club car has been a fixture on this particular train for a long time- the car is used by a club of regular riders and is ex-RTA, ex-C&NW- it still wears its original pre-Metra RTA colors. The eight-car train snakes through the tight, complex trackage in the station throat, as trains wait to depart and enter the terminal. Train 341 stops only at Ravenswood, Wilmette, Braeside, Highland Park, Fort Sheridan, Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, Waukegan, Zion, Winthrop Harbor and Kenosha, Wisconsin, skipping 15 local stops.
Metra, NS / BNSF, Amtrak & CN at Union Ave and Bridgeport, Chicago, 23.12.11
Train 1: Metra F40PHM-2 #189, the "Village of Villa Park", smokes it up coming up the grade with a nine-car outbound express, a special run to accommodate earlier departures from downtown for the holidays. Train 2: Another commuter extra-- this one will run express to La Grange Road, then make all stops as far as Fairview Avenue-- passes the Halsted Street platform on its way out of the city. F40PHM-2 #192 leads. Note the original marker lights on the third car. Train 3: Norfolk Southern SD70M-2 #2677, BNSF ES44AC #5883 and BNSF SD70MAC #8896 lead NS train 33G, an Elkhart, Indiana to Chicago manifest. This train is one of a few that run all the way up the NS Chicago Line and around the wye near Amtrak's Chicago coach yard and shops, to access the BNSF "Racetrack" Chicago Sub. Train 4: A regularly-scheduled Metra six-car local run stops at Halsted Street. Why the one person got off the train here is beyond me... it's only 5 minutes to Union Station from here. Train 5: Amtrak's train #3, the Southwest Chief, led by P42DCs #116 and 119, comes up the "hill" on the beginning of the "Racetrack". Train 6: Now at Bridgeport Junction / Ashland Avenue, where Canadian National's ex-Illinois Central Joliet and Freeport Subdivisions join to form the Chicago Sub, a CN local job comes across the South Fork of the South Branch of the Chicago River, and takes the Freeport Sub west, having finished switching out the small Bridgeport Yard on the other side of the river. The yard serves as ...

Metra BNSF Line 3-Way Meet at Downers Grove, 16.02.12
It's the thick of the evening commuter rush on the BNSF "Racetrack" in suburban Downers Grove, Illinois, and we've got a three-way meet between "dinkies" on our hands here. F40PHM-2 ("Winnebago") #191 has 6 cars in tow as it stops with an outbound (westbound) local toward Aurora. An inbound (eastbound) train for Chicago, pushed by F40PHM-2 #190, loads and leaves on the close track, while an express headed for Naperville blows through on Main 2. This train is led by "Winnebago" #196 and is 11 cars- the longest allowed on this or any Metra line.

Metra Electric 316, 315, west of Stony Island at 71st St.
Northbound Metra Electric 316 pulls out of the Stony Island station at 71st St., headed toward Hyde Park and downtown. Two minutes later, outbound 315 rounds the curve and pulls into the station. Metra's only electrified rail line was formerly the Illinois Central's commuter line. The 71st Street line is a branch of the main line, which runs from downtown Chicago to the south suburb of University Park. Its stations were briefly the only ones in the Metra rail system with turnstiles, until a revolt by Metra Electric passengers prompted their removal. The people who live in that apartment building on the north side of 71st St. must have permanent tinnitus.

At BNSF's Western Avenue Yard, ex-Santa Fe GP50 #6708, BNSF C44-9W #5294 and ex-Santa Fe "warbonnet" C44-9W #718 are on the point of a run-through manifest waiting to get through Union Avenue and 21st Street interlockings to access Norfolk Southern trackage. NS SD60M #6762 and ex-Conrail SD50 #5406, one of just 8 "Conrail Quality"-painted SD50s left in NS's dwindling SD50 fleet, lead a train that has just come off of home rails, into the BNSF yard. In Union Pacific's adjacent Global One intermodal yard, (formerly C&NW's Wood Street Yard) GP15T #Y717 shoves baretables. We pass the Halsted Street station, and go through Union Avenue Interlocking, with the St Charles Air Line heading upgrade to the left, and the south approaches for the Canal Street Wye branching off to the right (south) at Jefferson Street. BNSF trains take the north leg of the wye into Union Station. We pass under Canal Street, then the BNSF-UP-CN/IC leg of the SCAL, and then the abandoned B&O bridge. Amtrak P42DC #28 switches some cars next to us, and Amtrak's Canal Street maintenance facility and coach yards are to the right. Metra/BNSF's coach yard and shops (the "Zephyr Pit") are to the left. We pass through CP Roosevelt and CP Taylor, then go "underground" at Polk Street. We are under the old Chicago Main Post Office, where until the early 2000's, Amtrak boxcars ...
Testing my New HD Camcorder (Panasonic HDC-TM41): CTA, Amtrak & Metra
This Christmas, I was given a new HD video camera (Panasonic HDC-TM41). The next day, I went out and tested it out throughout the day, filming the CTA Blue Line downtown, Amtrak's Empire Builder and Hiawatha Service at Forest Glen, and Metra UP-NW Line at Jefferson Park and Norwood Park on the far northwest side, later going to Edgebrook to catch the last northbound Hiawatha Service. In all, it seems to work very well in a variety of lighting conditions, and the 16x optical zoom is amazing! More to come with this camera!
Metra Electric, South Shore Line & Amtrak at 27th St, 3 October, 2011
Here's close to an hour (edited down to about 8 minutes!) of the early evening rush period on Metra's ex-Illinois Central Electric District. Paralleling the electric tracks on the east is the ex-IC freight main, now CN's Chicago Sub-- Amtrak's southbound Illini is seen on it. A combination of old IC Highliners, new Nippon-Sharyo electric bilevels (both with Metra and the South Shore Line), and Budd-built South Shore Line single-level cars round out the equipment seen here. Expresses (for the most part, and mostly on the outer express tracks, though some on the local, inner tracks) bypass the station on their way to more major stops, and local trains stop. The station used to serve the Michael Reese / Mercy Hospital complex, until it was abandoned, then later demolished in 2009-10. Now it serves the surrounding Bronzeville neighborhood and the Lake Meadows housing complex, though all are quite a walk away and there is no automobile access to the station any longer. So, despite its closeness to McCormick Place, (23rd Street / McCormick Place station serves it, directly underneath the convention center) the 27th Street station is a rickety, dilapidated, out-of-the-way stop with light traffic. Nonetheless, at rush hour it still sees its fair share of commuters.
