The Meteora (Greek: Μετέωρα, "suspended rocks" or "suspended in the air") is the largest and most important complex of monasteries in all of Greece, second only to Mount Athos. The monasteries are built on spectacular natural sandstone rock pillars at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly, near the Peneios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. Monasteries of Meteora Greece were built by hermit Monks hundreds of years ago. These spectacular religious sites are built atop thousand foot columns of solid rock. The idea behind these colossal perches was to be closer to God and further away from civilization. Each brick for these building were hoisted up by a bucket one at a time with a rope and pulley system. It took many years to build each one. UFO's have been known to frequent the area.

Meteora, the Cliff Top Monasteries of Greece
In a region of almost inaccessible sandstone peaks, monks settled on these 'columns of the sky' from the 11th century onwards. By the 14th century, monasteries were systematically built on top of the nearly inaccessible peaks as places of refuge, when the area came under attack by the Turks. By the end of the 15th century, there were 24 monasteries. Meaning 'suspended in air,' the name Meteora soon came to encompass the entire rock community of the 24. During the Turkish occupation it was the monasteries which kept alive the Hellenic culture and traditions. Today only six of the monasteries are active. In 1988, Meteora was identified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lord I have Cried Extended Meteora Version Plagal of 1st Tone - Chanted by the Monks at one of the 6 remaining Monastaries remaining at Meteora Greece. Chanted during Vespers. The word Meteora means literally 'hovering in the air' and of course brings to mind the word meteor. What created this rare geological phenomenon is one of the mysteries of nature and there are many theories though they remain theories and none have been proven. But as amazing a marvel of nature as these giant rocks are the buildings on the top of these are a marvel of man and seem just as miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places to visit in Greece. The area of Meteora was originally settled by monks who lived in caves within the rocks during the 11th Century. But as the times became more unsure during an age of Turkish occupation, brigandry and lawlessness, they climbed higher and higher up the rock face until they were living on the inaccessable peaks where they were able to build by bringing material and people up with ladders and baskets and build the first monasteries. This was also how the monasteries were reached until the nineteen twenties and now there are roads, pathways and steps to the top. There are still examples of these baskets which are used for bringing up provisions.
