Chance Conversations: An Interview with Merce Cunningham and John Cage
In the spring of 1981, during a residency at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, choreographer Merce Cunningham and composer John Cage sat down to discuss their work and artistic process. As frequent collaborators, Cage and Cunningham pioneered a new framework of performance. Their novel approach allowed for mediums to exist independently, or rather cohabitate, within a performance, thus abandoning the co-dependent model of dance and music. Cage and Cunningham go on to discuss the methodology and motivations behind chance operations, a term used to describe artistic decisions based on unpredictability. Wanting to free himself of his likes and dislikes, Cage describes how Zen Buddhism influenced his work, leading him to use tools of chance. These new methods, adopted by both Cunningham and Cage, overturned a whole foundation of thought around music, movement, and the process of creating art.

In 1944, Martha Graham's ballet was filmed in 16mm with the original cast, as a reference tool. Unfortunately, it was shot without sound, and as far as I know no one has attempted to add the score back. I took the music from the 1958 film included on the 2007 Criterion DVD: www.amazon.com ...and tried to match it as closely as I could to the 1944 version. This is all the footage that was included, in bits and pieces, on the DVD. Therefore, she did not aspire for movement to be beautiful, as much of classical ballet demanded, but rather that it be significant. Many of her works dealt with explicitly sexual or violent themes, and Graham also worked extensively with the techniques of contraction and release. She often created works entirely from the roots upwards, including the costumes, music and choreography. She collaborated with and/or taught the foremost artists and dancers of her time, including dancers Alvin Ailey, Twyla Tharpe, and Merce Cunningham, composer Aaron Copland, and sculptor Isamu Noguchi." .

La Merce - Castellers - Human Towers 2009
This event is one of the highlights of the Merce festival and normally takes place in Placa de Jaume. Thousands of people will pack out the square so it is worth arriving early. The aim of the Castellers is to build a human tower and have a young child climb to the very top of the tower and stand up. It requires a tremendous amount of planning and teamwork to build a human tower and it is quite an amazing sight to see.
