Mellotron Matching Mole
The gorgeous and haunting passage (using the same violins sound) from "Immediate Curtain", the last track on the first Matching Mole album. It's probably the angle at which it was filmed, but again the sounds of the tapes springing back to their starts is almost as loud as the music, but you'll still get the idea!

Opeth - Mellotron Heart
This is an alternate (likely earlier) version of the song "Porcelain Heart", from Opeth's 2008 album "Watershed", played on a mellotron keyboard and synthesizers. This version was first released as its own limited released single as well as on limited copies of the album "Watershed", and then later released as a b-side to the "Burden" single along with a cover of the Alice in Chains song "Would?" LYRICS I lost all I had I turned to my friends I wrote down a name I wallowed in shame I said that I love I cling to my past I promise to stay I went far away Icy roads beneath my feet Lead me through wastelands of deceit Rest your head now, don't you cry Don't ever ask the reason why Kept inside a idle race Ghost of an idol's false embrace Rest your head now, don't you cry Don't ever ask the reason why

Watcher of the skies intro, alternative Mellotron sounds
Another performance of the well-known Genesis track played on the Mellotron M400 with different sounds — it's a mix of the classic 3 Violins and the Pipe Organ which adds the lower octave to the mix. Different to the cello, which has the same function, but the organ is much more "deep". I have not much use for the sound, but combined with the strings it works very well. Adding a large reverb and it's a wonderful alternative to the brass/violin sound that Tony Banks used.

Mike Dickson: Spem In Alium (Mellotron)
From 'In Excelsis' www.mikedickson.org.uk When I hear this, I know that I'm only playing at this game. In fact I know that I can't actually play the game at all. My take on the greatest piece of music ever written. No words and hence none of that conspiratorial whispering that goes on in the best recordings of this wonderful piece, but the constant presentation of harmonic and melodic ideas is still locked in there. Forty voices in the original, nearer eighty in this version thanks to the Mellotron and the Magnus, this piece rounds off the 'In Excelsis' album in a way I would never have thought possible. The instrumentation on this piece comprises Mellotron (playing eight voice choir, Birotron choir, boys choir and Russian choir), Magnus choirs, Spectrasonics Choirs, Microkorg Vocoder and bass pedals.

Retro Sounds - Mellotron - Part 1
Some retro sounds played from my Nord Electro 3 keyboard. Wonderful tape (Mellotron) sounds: -Flute -3 Violins -Female Choir -Male Choir -Strings Ensamble Mellotron The Mellotron is an electro-mechanical, polyphonic keyboard originally developed and built in Birmingham, England in the early 1960s. It superseded the Chamberlin, which was the world's first sample-playback keyboard. The heart of the instrument is a bank of parallel linear magnetic audio tape strips. Playback heads underneath each key enable the playing of pre-recorded sounds. Each of the tape strips has a playing time of approximately eight seconds, after which the tape comes to a dead stop and rewinds to the start position.

Here's my Mini-Magitron. It has a small midi-keyboard, a laptop with mellotron-soundfonts and a pair of active PC-speakers inside. Retro Sounds - Mellotron - Part 2
Some retro sounds played from a VST Library using the Motif as a MIDI Controller. Wonderful tape (Mellotron) sounds: -Rhythms -Flute -3 Violins -Female Choir -Male Choir -Strings Ensamble -Brass -Sax Although the Mellotron had been used earlier by some British bands, the song Strawberry Fields Forever by the Beatles (Flute) and Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues (3 Violins) in 1967 became the first Mellotron ''hits'' both in Europe, the US and the rest of the World, forever making a mark in popular culture. The M400 was used on the road and in the studio during the 1970's by Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Deep Purple, Aerosmith, Wings, David Bowie, Kraftwerk and others. During later years it has been used by Oasis, Primal Scream, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Nelly Furtado, Air, REM, Manic Street Preachers and many others. Through the extremely successful music of these groups and artists the Mellotrons ound has been widely spread, and even though most people don't know that it's a Mellotron, they've heard the sound. During the 80's the Mellotron remained virtually unused. Most notable exceptions are Talk Talk in Life's what You Make it and OMD's Enola Gay and other songs by these bands. The Mellotron experienced a renaissance during the 1990's when numerous bands and artists began reusing it; Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Radiohead, Air, Monster Magnet, REM and Manic Street Preachers. After 2000 the Mellotron is ...

Mellotron Classics : Space Oddity on iPhone
During Summer 2009 the 40th anniversary edition of Space Oddity was released, along with 8 original stems to support remixing. How could we possibly say no to that remix challenge?! So, challenge accepted - here is one of the most influential Mellotron songs of all time - Rick Wakeman, no less - with his Wakemanness artfully removed by muting the track in Logic. And the Rolf Harrisisms of the Stylophone removed as well, but that was trickier as the Stylophone and lead guitar share a track. Mellotron and Stylophone were replaced by Ellatron's 'Mellostring' and 'Stellavibe' respectively, to give authentic Mellotron string and vibrato stylophone sounds. The first part of the video was captured using the iPhone simulator and shows how the chords were built note-by-note - of course the full chords could easily have been played, but building the chords a note at a time illustrates very clearly that a person without any keyboard skills can build chords and later use them live as part of a musical performance. Plus chords that span a big range can be built by remapping the keyboard during the recording process (check out the E7 for an example of that). Ellatron sits beautifully in the mix even though the level is artificially lifted for emphasis, and the result is totally convincing, with no post-processing at all on the Ellatron tracks - this is exactly the sound that came out of the iPhone. There's no question Ellatron is an excellent performance instrument, particularly the ...
