Robots to the Rescue (feat. MDS robot Nexi)
The Personal Robots group presents a scenario demonstrating mixed-initiative human-robot teaming for disaster response. The humanoid robot Nexi and a team of robot helicopters are deployed in response to a simulated fire aboard a Navy ship. Working together with a remote human operator, the robots search for survivors and guide them to safety. A mixed-initiative tasking system allows the human operator to specify team goals via a tasking interface, and also allows goals to be generated by the robots as a result of local observations and interactions with victims. The robots autonomously handle the details of navigation and task execution, and communicate their location, task status, and important observations to the operator via the interface. The interface also allows the robots to ask for the operator's help with difficult recognition problems, such as confirming the location of a victim from a partial identification.

New hope for MDS patients
An encouraging new treatment is available for patients suffering from a malignant blood disease called Myelodysplastic Syndromes. As we hear from Steve Gendel, the MDS foundation, which represents patients suffering from this condition, is pointing to just-published data in the journal Lancet Oncology that says the drug Vidaza extends survival:

1: ScanRobot 2.0 MDS - Fast and efficient book scanning, inclusive book cover The Treventus ScanRobot is a new breed of Colour, Greyscale and Black and White Book scanner that allows you to place a book on its' unique book carrier and then walk away. The book scanner will then scan and turn every page by itself until the book is completed. The book Scanner has been designed to turn the pages very carefully, allowing even books that are several centuries old to be scanned. The very gentle book scanning and page turning process was developed and optimised in close collaboration with the German Institute for book and handwriting restoration (IBR) and the Munich Digitisation Centre (MDZ) of the BSB. The books are only opened to a 60 degree angle to prevent over stretching and damage to the spine. Books with different paper densities, porosites and textures can all be easily scanned. Then using a unique prism technology and automatic book cradle alignment each page is scanned distortion-free right up to the book binding. This then allows for excellent OCR'ing of those images. Scanning is accomplished with heat, infrared and UV-free illumination and both the book and operator are only exposed to the light for a few milliseconds, thus reducing light exposure to a previously unattainable minimum.
