May Day display: Hundreds of thousands rally worldwide

Moscow's streets are brimming with people this May Day - with most celebrating, and some demonstrating. Trade Unions marched under the Labour Day flag to demand better working conditions. And even Russia's ruling tandem took to spearheading a crowd of their supporters. RT's Irina Galushko was there. Opposition members are also out to get their message across. Among them, the country's second-largest party, which still refuses to accept last year's parliamentary election results, and is unhappy about Vladimir Putin's return to The Kremlin. Jacob Greaves reports from amid a sea of red flags. May the 1st is also being marked with mass Labour Day marches worldwide. In Europe - several large nationwide demos are underway. German clashes: May Day rallies turn violent in Berlin

Left wing protesters clashed with police in Berlin as a traditional May Day demonstration came to a halt far before reaching its intended end in the city center. Some demonstrators threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at the riot police, and officers responded with charges and batons. Arrests were made. The thousands strong demonstration had set off late on Tuesday afternoon from Berlin's neighborhood of Kreuzberg. Meanwhile in Hamburg, over one-thousand leftist activists gathered for the annual May Day protest march, local media reported. The demonstration - themed "No Alternative to Revolution" - saw protesters marching from St. Pauli to Ottensen. Right at the start, protesters threw fireworks at police officers, but the crowd remained mostly calm for the ensuing march. However, after a speech marking the end of the demonstration, violence erupted. Stones and bottles were thrown at the policemen escorting the march. Police responded employing pepper spray and arresting several protesters. Injuries were reported on both sides. Later on, riots broke out in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel neighborhood, a notorious site for May Day violence in past years. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

London May Day - More and More Action

There is now a concern for Unworkers rights. The British Government is making a law that those without work, who are under the care of JSA (Job Seekers Allowance) must work for next to nothing. And so we see people targeting the companies that are participating in this... It turned into a cat and mouse game, often the protesters did outwit the police. May Day Parade - Demonstration of Workers & Students & Activists

Trade unionists and political activists assemble in the square in preparation for the annual Workers Day parade and red flags flutter in the wind as people get their banners unfurled. There is a strong anti-cuts theme and there is a large student contingent on the demonstration as well as other-anti-cuts activists. "students and workers, unite and fight!" is one of the slogans heard frequently during the demo. The march is headed by a pipe band and backed up by a UNITE trade union bus decked with the union banner and a slogan saying "Cuts kills communities". This is a video of May Day '11 (Sunday 1st). The 2012 one is on Sunday 6/05/12 (the first Sunday of May). As well as a pipe band there is a brass band. Many unions follow including UNISON, GMB, UCATT, RMT, the STUC, various trades councils, political parties and student and anti-cuts activists and single issue campaigners. There was a GambiaCampaign.org banner campaigning for human rights in the Gambia. The Black Triangle disability rights organisation was there to campaign against cuts in disabled facilties and benefits. The Accord centre for the severely disabled is under attack as the local government want to flatten it to make way for a car park for the Commonwealth Games, although there are already plenty of car parks in or close to the city centre. Later on in the demo the slogan "Commonwealth games, Commonwealth shame! Save the Accord right now!" can be heard. The STUC women's committee banner can be seen as ...

"Occupy Everywhere": May Day Special Show on OWS, Immigration, Labor Protests. 1 of 3

DemocracyNow.org - As Occupy Wall Street plans nationwide protests marking International Workers Day, or May Day, we discuss the movement with Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, Chris Hedges; Amin Husain, editor of Tidal Magazine and a key facilitator of the Occupy movement; Marina Sitrin, author of "Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina" and a member of Occupy's legal working group; and Teresa Gutierrez, of the May 1st Coalition for Worker and Immigrant Rights. We also get an update from protests on the streets of New York City from Ryan Devereaux, former Democracy Now! correspondent, now with The Guardian. "People all over the country are talking about May Day as our day, whether you want to call it 'workers' holiday' or 'immigrant rights' or 'the 99 percent,'' says Martina Sitrin, who notes Occupy activists hope to use May Day as a way to also build solidarity with the student movement and non-unionized workers as well. "This year is an important year to revive the struggle for immigrants in the wake of a million of our people being deported," adds Teresa Guitierrez. Meanwhile, a debate over tactics continues within the Occupy movement. Chris Hedges discusses his recent column titled, "The Cancer in Occupy," which critiques Black Bloc anarchists who cover their faces during protests and sometimes destroy property. "The Occupy movement expresses what the majority feels. The goal of the security state is to sever the movement from the mainstream," Hedges says ...

May Day Occupy Wall Street Protests Attempt To Rekindle Movement.

Follow: @SlateViral, Facebook.com/SlateVideo Watch more: Youtube.com/slatester, SlateV.com Did Occupy Wall Street protests go away, or were they just hibernating? The national movement has planned a large number of May Day actions in US cities—both permitted and forbidden by law enforcement. In New York City, groups of several hundred protesters marched and rallied, and police arrested protesters in front of Bank of America branches. Celebrities who have supported the movement, like Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello, planned everything from solidarity rallies to music workshops in Manhattan's Bryant Park. Ferry worker unions in San Francisco also planned to strike and shut down service, while Oakland Occupy protesters were also calling for a general strike in that city as law enforcement braced for possible violence. Police raided occupy organizers apartments ahead of the planned events, and organizers denied connection to packages mailed to various financial institutions containing a white powder that was later found to be nonlethal. The day may be a crucial one for the movement, which struggled to stay present in the national conversation over the winter.

MAY DAY MAYHEM IN OAKLAND: Occupy continues on their Destructive Path

On the morning of May 1, 2012, several citizen journalist organized to provide media coverage of the planned Occupy May Day events around the San Francisco Bay Area. We met in San Francisco at 6am to see what would come of the combined Golden Gate Transit Authority and Occupy strike on the district. Originally the Golden Gate bridge was to be shut down during the morning commute. John J rode with the bike brigade who were to support the city wide strikes, Rich L and Jack W went to the main gathering point at City Hall, Sally Z and Gini C were across the bay at the ferry terminal in Larkspur, and Glenn G, Georgine C, Garnet G, Paul F and I were at the Ferry building. We covered what we could, but this turned out to be nothing more than a union strike as Occupy had apparently abandoned the strikers at the Ferry building. So we decided to go across the bay to Oakland to catch the noon time "events". We arrived at 11:30 and with two camera teams began to interview some people. There were about 700 spread out around Frank Ogawa Plaza (the original "Occupy Oakland" landing zone) and in the adjoining streets. Mostly "hippie" types ranging from liberal to full blown communist between 20 and 50 were there, but there was also a large presence of the "Black Bloc" demolition team, identifiable by their black dress, backpacks, black flags (on 3/4" steel poles), masks and shields. There was tension in the air, and I did not see much of an organized presence in the plaza. We were there ...
