Paris Uprising May 1968
A look at the events and some of the causes of the uprising in France in the Spring of 1968. Unfortuately, there is no mention of one of the driving forces of the uprising both before and during the revolt - the Situationist International. For more information check out the writings of the Situationists themselves. In a society that has abolished every kind of adventure the only adventure that remains is to abolish the society. Those who make revolutions halfway only dig their own graves. No replastering, the structure is rotten. We will ask nothing. We will demand nothing. We will take, occupy. Down with the state. It's painful to submit to our bosses; it's even more stupid to choose them. Abolish class society. We want neither to rule nor to be ruled. All power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely Politics is in the streets. Barricades close the streets but open the way. People who work get bored when they don't work. People who don't work never get bored. The boss needs you, you don't need the boss. Humanity won't be happy till the last capitalist is hung with the guts of the last bureaucrat. A single nonrevolutionary ...

23. May 1968
France Since 1871 (HIST 276) The student protests of May 1968 in France were linked to international protests against the American war in Vietnam and other political and social consequences of the Cold War. In many respects, the terrible condition of many schools in France that led students to revolt remains a problem. Recent attempts to impose American-style reforms on the university system have met with protests that echo some of the demands made in '68; although, other conditions for revolution seem as though they may never again be realized in the same way. 00:00 - Chapter 1. France May 1968 Movement (Part-1)
France 1968 (Part-1, 2, 3, 4): This is an effort to present a short audio-visual accounting of what happened in France in May 1968. France was then rocked by a wave of mass struggle that stirred almost all sections of the French society. The whole French society reached a pinnacle with a real possibility of a revolution, an unfeigned desire to pull down the rotted structure, a complete reversal of the French society as a whole.
French nostalgic for May 1968 protests - 16 May 2008
Thousands of French teachers and public sector workers have gone on strike in Paris to protest against job cuts and education reform. Estelle Youssouffa, Al Jazeera's correspondent reporting from Paris, draws on similarities from forty years ago when a social revolution shook the nation in the 1960s and education and reform thrived in the heart of French society. "May 68" was the year in which a series of student protests and a general strike caused the eventual collapse of the French government.

Archie Bell & The Drells - Tighten up (1968)
"Tighten Up" was a 1968 song by Houston, Texas based R&B vocal group Archie Bell & the Drells. It reached #1 on both the Billboard R&B and pop charts in the spring of 1968. It is ranked #265 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and is one of the earliest funk hits in music history. "Tighten Up" was written by Archie Bell and Billy Buttier. It was one of the first songs that Archie Bell & the Drells recorded, in a session in 1967, along with a number of songs including "She's My Woman". Soon afterwards Bell was drafted into the US Army and began serving in Vietnam. The song became a hit in Houston, and was picked up by Atlantic Records for distribution in April 1968. By the summer it topped both the Billboard R&B and pop charts. It also sold a million copies by May 1968, gaining an RIAA gold disc. The line in "Tighten Up", "we dance just as good as we walk" was a little ironic, given that Bell had been shot in the leg and was consigned to a military hospital bed at the time. The introduction features Bell introducing himself as being from Houston, Texas. According to the Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson, Bell heard a comment after the Kennedy assassination in Dallas, that "nothing good ever came out of Texas." Bell wanted his listeners to know "we were from Texas and we were good." The song described an accompanying dance that the band had invented, also called the "Tighten Up"; this dance became popular concurrently ...

Legend of a Mind - Moody Blues (1968)
"Legend Of A Mind," by The Moody Blues, from their album "In Search of the Lost Chord". (1968) The song was written by Ray Thomas in tribute to LSD guru Timothy Leary, and includes a masterful flute solo performed by Thomas. Timothy Francis Leary (October 22, 1920 May 31, 1996) was an American writer, psychologist, futurist, and advocate of psychedelic drug research and use. An icon of 1960s counterculture, Leary is most famous as a proponent of the therapeutic and spiritual benefits of LSD. He coined and popularized the catch phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out." In early 1995, Leary discovered that he was terminally ill with inoperable prostate cancer. Leary's death was videotaped for posterity at his request, capturing his final words. His last word, according to his son, Zachary Leary, was "beautiful." Seven grams of Leary's ashes were launched into space aboard a rocket carrying the remains of 24 other people including Gene Roddenberry (creator of Star Trek), Gerard O'Neill (space physicist), Krafft Ehricke (rocket scientist), and others. A Pegasus rocket containing their remains was launched on April 21, 1997, and remained in orbit for six years until it burnt up in the atmosphere. Lyrics: Timothy Leary's dead. No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in. Timothy Leary's dead. No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in. He'll fly his astral plane, Takes you trips around the bay, Brings you back the same day, Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary's dead. No, no, no, no ...

Finding the right balance between a well tuned street car and a flat-out performance car is no easy task. However that didn't stop Southern California resident Bob Hall from building what may just be one of the best vehicles we've ever driven. He started with an ultra clean 1968 Camaro SS convertible, fitted it with a supercharged LSA mill from a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, reworked the entire drivetrain and suspension, and in the end, created a car that's 44 years old but feels like it rolled out of the factory yesterday.

Frank Sinatra Reprise® Recordings Greatest Hits! 1968 (H. Meier, H. Bradtke, J. Mercer) [Recorded May 16, 1966, Hollywood] The summer wind, came blowin' in from across the sea It lingered there to touch your hair and walk with me All summer long we sang a song and then we strolled that golden sand Two sweethearts and the summer wind Like painted kites, those days and nights, they went flyin' by The world was new beneath a blue umbrella sky Then softer than a piper man one day it called to you I lost you, I lost you to the summer wind The autumn wind and the winter winds, they have come and gone And still the days, those lonely days, they go on and on And guess who sighs his lullabies through nights that never end My fickle friend, the summer wind The summer wind Warm summer wind Mmm, the summer wind

The Seekers - The Carnival Is Over.(1968)
From their farewell concert at the BBC in London July 7 1968."The carnival is over"Not until 1993 did they get together again with Judith as a lead singer. They then more or less performed concerts together until 2004.But the years are moving on for all of us and they have retired for good now as a group after having their last tour summer of 2004.Their last ever concert was in Hong Kong October 8th 2004.Keith Potger, Judith Durham and Athol Guy still perform in Australia as solo artists. But as they have said themselves:"Never say never"they are to tour in May 2011 with Andre Rieu in Australia. The lyrics for "The Carnival is over" was written by Tom Springfield and the melody is based on a old Russian folk song. Judith had to put up a real fight to get this song recorded as the boys rather would record another song called "Hummingbird" instead. But she got her will and it was recorded first time in 1965.At it's peak this single record was selling 90000 copies a day in the UK.
The Intruders - "Together" (1967)
The Intruders were an American soul music group most popular in the 1960s and 1970s. As one of the first groups to have hit songs under the direction of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, they had a major influence on the development of Philadelphia soul. Formed around 1960, the group originally consisted of Sam "Little Sonny" Brown, Eugene "Bird" Daughtry, Phillip "Phil" Terry and Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards. In 1969, Sam Brown was replaced as lead singer by Bobby Starr, only to rejoin the group in 1973. In 1965, when songwriters and record producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff first contemplated leaving the Cameo-Parkway record label to risk launching their own label, the vocalists on which they pinned all their hopes and venture capital were The Intruders. Like many other subsequent acts the duo produced, which include the popular Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and The O'Jays, The Intruders had already developed a vocal sound that was both theirs and uniquely Philadelphian. Brown, Daughtry, Terry and Edwards had been recording and performing one-off singles together since 1961, blending Philly's street corner doo-wop tradition with black gospel fervor. The result was neither as pop-infected as Motown, nor as funky and blues-inflected as Stax. The sound which The Intruders refined for the Excel, Gamble and Philadelphia International imprints reflected a different attitude than either Stax or Motown. Gamble and Huff's success with The Intruders helped convince Columbia Records ...
