Where the Wild Things Are

Innovative director Spike Jonze collaborates with celebrated author Maurice Sendak to bring one of the most beloved books of all time to the big screen in "Where the Wild Things Are," a classic story about childhood and the places we go to figure out the world we live in. The film tells the story of Max, a rambunctious and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home and escapes to where the Wild Things are. Max lands on an island where he meets mysterious and strange creatures whose emotions are as wild and unpredictable as their actions. The Wild Things desperately long for a leader to guide them, just as Max longs for a kingdom to rule. When Max is crowned king, he promises to create a place where everyone will be happy. Max soon finds, though, that ruling his kingdom is not so easy and his relationships there prove to be more complicated than he originally thought. MPAA Rating: PG © 2009 KLG Film Invest GmbH. Maurice Sendak: Where The Wild Things Are Author Dead at 83

Follow: @SlateViral, Facebook.com/SlateVideo Watch: YouTube.com/Slatester, SlateV.com Author Maurice Sendak, who wrote and illustrated numerous children's books including Where the Wild Things Are, Chicken Soup with Rice, and In the Night Kitchen, has died of complications from a recent stroke at the age of 83. Known and loved for introducing darker and deeper themes to contemporary children's literature, Sendak's classic books offered fantastical and even dangerous journeys for his subjects. In 2011 he released Bumble-Ardy, the first book in 30 years for which he both wrote the story and drew illustrations. It spent five weeks on the New York Times children's best-seller list. Sendak appeared earlier this year on The Colbert Report, hilariously offering his opinion on everything from the "idiocy" of Newt Gingrich to respecting the depth of kids. "There is something in this country that is so opposed to understanding the complexity of children," said Sendak. "It's quite amazing." Sendak obviously never failed to understand that complexity, and for that he will surely be missed.

Some thoughts on iPhone about Maurice Sendak, who died today. Where the Wild Things Are was very much the book that inspired me and nurtured me through the years of learning how to illustrate and write children's books. I always imagined maybe I would meet him one day, but it is not to be. Here are just a few thoughts from a children's book illustrator, just returned from a tiring day in school, only to find his hero (Grumpy old curmudgeon that he was!) has died.

Pilobolus and Maurice Sendak - "A Selection" - compilation

In 1999 Pilobolus brought in its first outside collaborators, Maurice Sendak and Arthur Yorinks, to create "A Selection," a meditation on the Holocaust; the creation of this piece is documented in the film Last Dance (2002). This video is a ten minute compilation from that film (available on a highly recommended DVD). I created this compilation in 2007, back in the early days of low-resolution YouTube. I haven't made it available for quite a few years, but with the death of Maurice Sendak today I thought it worth sharing again. Children's author Maurice Sendak dies

The man behind children's books like "Where the Wild Things Are" has died.

'Where Wild Things Are' author Maurice Sendak Dies

Sendak, who died early Tuesday in Danbury, Conn. at age 83, four days after suffering a stroke, revolutionized children's books and how we think about childhood simply by leaving in what so many writers before had excluded. His kids misbehaved and didn't regret it and in their dreams and nightmares fled to the most unimaginable places. Monstrous creatures were devised from his studio, but no more frightening than the grownups in his stories or the cloud of the Holocaust that darkened his every page. Rarely was a man so uninterested in being loved so adored. His books sold millions of copies and his most curmudgeonly persona became as much a part of his legend as Maurice Sendak Dead ! "Where the Wild Things Are," his signature book, and a hit movie in 2009. Communities attempted to ban his work, but he also had friends in the most powerful places. President Bill Clinton awarded Sendak a National Medal of the Arts in 1996 and in 2009 President Obama read "Where the Wild Things Are" for the Easter Egg Roll.
