Unsilenced Masks - VENICE - Italy
The carnival of Venice (or Carnevale di Venezia in Italian) Masks have always been a central feature of the Venetian carnival; traditionally people were allowed to wear them between the festival of Santo Stefano (St. Stephen's Day, December 26) at the start of the carnival season and midnight of Shrove Tuesday. As masks were also allowed during Ascension and from October 5 to Christmas, people could spend a large proportion of the year in disguise. Maskmakers (mascherari) enjoyed a special position in society, with their own laws and their own guild. In 1797 Venice became part of the Austrian-held Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia when Napoleon signed the Treaty of Campo Formio. The Austrians took control of the city on January 18, 1798 and it fell into a decline which also effectively brought carnival celebrations to a halt for almost two centuries. Carnival was outlawed by the fascist government in the 1930s. It was not until a modern mask shop was founded in the 1980s that Carnival enjoyed a revival. Carnival starts around two weeks before Ash Wednesday and ends on Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras), the day before Ash Wednesday. Venetian masks can be made in leather or with the original papier-mâché technique. The original masks were rather simple in design and decoration. They often had a symbolic and practical function. However, it does include adjustment layers, and these little beauties have their own layer masks. In this video I show you a rather clever trick whereby you can hijack this mask and use it as you would a normal layer mask. Best of all its really easy to use.

Luminosity masking is method for selecting pixels based on their light level. This has become my 'go to' tool for making selections and converting them to masks because 1) it is quick 2) it is easy and 3) it is a subtle method for making masks.
Photoshop Tutorials: Advanced channel masking [Masking complex objects]
In my very first photoshop tutorial i will go over the really powerful advanced channel masking technique. Many times an editor needs to isolate an object from a frame, in this case we'll remove the entire sky background from a high density-high quality picture of a tree. The stock used in this tutorial can be found here: i54.tinypic.com Advanced Channel Masking? Huh? Using a tool such as the lasso tool, pen tool, magic wand tool etc. can seem quite efficient at making a selection HOWEVER in this case none of the tools would do you any justice based on the factor of time consumption, accuracy and efficiency. This is where the advanced channel masking technique will help. Basically you will choose between the 3 RGB channels and decide which one has the biggest contrast between colors (which one has a higher contrast of white and black), in this case the Blue RGB channel was used. With the Blue channel being the only one selected we appy several image calculations and level modifications to basically end up with a black and white silhouette of our entire shot. You are then easily able to create a selection, invert it as you please and layer via cut/copy or adjustment layer it. Leaving you with a very accurate mask of the object you want isolated. Today I'm going to show you how to use masking fluid. Most of you have probably already used it, but there are some little things that I think might help you even if you have used it, and i hope so. I have drawn this a little heavy with a marker so that you can see it, and we're going to use Cheap Joe's Masking Fluid first. Cheap Joe's Masking Fluid comes with a little brush in it, isn't that nice? So you don't have to put your good brushes in the masking fluid. What you want to do is be sure your paper is dry--never put masking fluid on wet paper, you will ruin the paper and will never be able to get that masking fluid off there. Carefully, put the masking fluid where you want white to be after you've painted. We're using this to protect our white paper to keep it white while we paint without having to meticulously paint around it. It's a great way to do that. The second one is Pebeo. Pebeo Drawing Gum is a masking fluid made by Pebeo that has color in it. What you want to do here--there's no brush so you want to take an old brush, this is an old nylon brush which is perfect for the masking fluid--and very carefully, wet your brush first, and start applying the masking fluid over the area that you want to keep white.
