Kids Marshmallow Experiment
The marshmallow experiment is a famous test of this concept conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year olds were given a marshmallow and promised another, only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not. The researchers then followed the progress of each child into adolescence, and demonstrated that those with the ability to wait were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers), and scored an average of 210 points higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Kitten Marshmallow: 4 weeks old and counting
Marshmallow was born on March 1st with low birth weight (~60% of the normal expected weight at about 66g or 2.3 oz). A month later, Marshy is breaking one pound, about 7 times the birthweight. At this point, we're just thankful that she's made it through the first month. What a blessing she is. Below are some notable changes in Marshy's behavior: She refuses to stay in her nest box, rebelliously clawing and crying murder when she is placed there. Marshy is also able to regulate her body temperature better now to the point where she no longer needs a heating pad or "rice socks" to keep warm when mama Mochi is not around. We used to place a heating pad beneath the nest box to cover about ½ of the surface area, so Marshy could keep warm, but also move off the heated area if she felt hot. With her head held high and steady, Marshmallow has become more photogenic as well, often times staring curiously straight into one's eyes, a move that would melt any stone heart. Marshmallow's developing curiosity drives her to walk a whole lot more to explore the seemingly vast world in front of her. It's amazing to witness her stumbling movements refine into a more stable gait as her hind legs and coordination strengthen and improve to match her front paws. To keep her safe when unsupervised, we have set up a couple of playpens so Marshy can walk "freely" without worries. Besides starting to walk about at a faster pace, she has also picked up scratching and chewing on objects. Marshmallow ...

We ran a duplicate of Stanford University's "Marshmallow Experiment" with our own Flood kids (Google it for the details). If they could delay gratification by sitting in a room alone with one marshmallow until the facilitator got back, they would be rewarded with an additional marshmallow. If they cracked, succumbed to temptation by eating the marshmallow before she returned, they would not be rewarded with an additional one. We hid 2 cameras in the room to watch the hilarious results.

Marshmallow Kitten: Week 5 of many Firsts
After the first month, kitten Marshmallow has achieved many "firsts" during her 5th week of life. Her first set of teeth is growing out, causing her to practically chew everything in sight. Some of her favorite targets are human hands and anything plastic. To assuage her itch to chew, we bought her some toys just for that purpose, which she quickly took a liking to. With chewing came an increased interest in scratching and swiping her small paw at anything she could get her hands on, including iPads, and our socks and pants. We used this opportunity to introduce her to a sisal scratching post. Marshy also first started to lick mama Mochi's food and water bowls during this week, signaling that she's ready for weaning. What charmingly messy times weaning can be. And with weaning came litter box training. Marshmallow sure let us know that she was ready to go on her own when she suddenly started crying and sniffing in one corner of the room, settling down with a semi-intensely focused gaze while she did her business. From then on, we would place her in a small litter box (with non-clumpable litter) after meals and active play. She quickly caught on from there, and now goes to #1 on her own :D First taste of independence. Marshmallow has learned to climb over barriers, and run away from pursuers. She now prefers to roam in an open space, and would vocally complain if she were enclosed in a small area when she was in a mood to play. And play seems to be her mindset whenever ...

Marshmallow Kitten Development at 3 Weeks Old
Marshmallow has just passed the 3-week-old mark. Compared to a life of around-the-clock suckling, sleeping, and worming around at age 2 weeks, newborn kitten Marshmallow has developed new moves. She first practiced holding her head steady, fixating her teardrop eyes on you. Marshy then became able to rest her tushy in a sit position. After that, she started standing on all fours, quickly building up the strength in her limbs to start walking. At the same time, Marshy began to learn from mama Mochi the art of self-grooming. On a couple of instances, it appears as though Marshy was sucking on her own "thumb" while sleeping. Super cute. Marshmallow is also becoming more and more comfortable spending time outside the nest box. As Marshy has grown and developed, mama Mochi has also developed stronger maternal instincts, becoming more responsive to her kitten's needs. One special treat that we've noticed is that when Marshy suckles with all her might, her ears tend to flap like wings. Just precious she is. More pictures at: sweetfurr.blogspot.com
Homemade marshmallows - St. Patrick's day green! :)
If you have concerns about the uncooked eggwhites (makes these marshmallows softer, lighter and fluffier) use dried egg white powder (as per recipe link below). You can also find many recipes that don't use the egg whites, just do an internet or You Tube video search. I mention these can be kept at room temperature, this would only be okay for a couple of days, if you plan on taking longer than that to consume them I would keep them in the refrigerator. Found this one on this website: smittenkitchen.com Some great photos and instructions there, go check it out. This recipe recommends a tablespoon of vanilla extract, I found this too strong of a vanilla flavour (with my homemade vanilla) I recommend 1-2 teaspoons only My original intention was to make these for the Gir cupcake www.youtube.com and for St. Patrick's day cupcakes, put the shamrocks I cut out were too big and too thick to use. You can pour the mixture onto a cookie sheet make it thinner if you plan on cutting out shapes for decorating cake/cupcakes with. Coming up.... Part 1 of 2: Marshmallows aren't vegetarian (unless specifically stated and *lab-tested*). Modern "marshmallows" are made with air-blown gelatin. Gelatin is probably the most repulsive of all animal products- made from rendering down the hooves, connective tissues, joints, eyeballs, brains and anything else that ends up in the sluice grates of the slaughterhouse floor. Originally, Marshmallows were made from the Marsh Mallows - a plant from Egypt. They were an expensive imported delicacy around the turn of the last century. Not too long after that, somebody found that you could make a fair approximation of the real Marshmallow texture by air-blowing gelatin and adding all sorts of other junk. The government never forced the frauds to change their deceptive labeling. It became so common that within a few decades, almost nobody even remembered what "Marshmallows" actually were, nor where the name came from. Which leads us to today, when scumbags will defraud the public, mislead entrepreneurs, sicken consumers, etc., by claiming that their gels can make "vegetarian" marshmallows. The answer? Filing complaints with the Federal Trade Commission and FDA. Somebody please let me know who to complain to in Canada. The other (BEST) solution is a class-action lawsuit. See PART 2 of this video.

How to make Marshmallows
Marshmallows: 3/4 cup cold water 2 TBS. unflavored gelatin 3/4 cup water 1 cup sugar 1 cup cornsyrup 1/8 tsp. salt 8x82" wax paper or parchment lined pan sprayed lightly with oil or dusted with cornstarch 5 qt. electric mixer with a wire whisk beater 1. Combine the cold water with the gelatin in a 2 cup microwaveable bowl and allow it to sit for 5 minutes. 2. In heavy bottom saucepan combine 3/4 cup water and the sugar and cornsyrup and salt. Stir over high heat until mixture comes to a boil. 3. Add the candy thermometer and cook until mixture reaches 280F. 4. When the candy reaches 260 F. put the gelatin in the microwave for 1 minute until it become liquid and hot. 5. Put the gelatin in the large mixer. 6. When the candy reaches 280 F. Put the mixer on low!and slow add the candy to the gelatin. Then very slowly increase the speed on the mixer bringing it up to high and beating for almost 10 mins. or until marshmallows become almost stiff peaks. 7. Pour into the paper lined pan and spread to desired thickness. 8. Cover and let set for 3 hours at least. then cut to desired size.
