This short documentary highlights Jason Lehmkule, Andrew Carlson, Matt Gabrielson and Josh Moen of Team USA Minnesota as they train for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. Since 2001 Team USA Minnesota has had 17 US National Champions and 61 top three finishes in US Championship races. Jason Lehmkuhle has two Olympic Trials top 10 finishes, including fifth in 2008. Andrew Carlson has won two US National Championships. Matt Gabrielson finished eighth in the 2008 Olympic Trials 5000 meters. Marathon 2 / Infinity Gameplay (Aleph One)
For those of you who didn't know, Bungie created the Marathon trilogy as the Mac's answer to Doom. These were the first ever FPS games to feature dual-wield weapons and multiplayer voice chat, as well as a deep single player story. Of course, Bungie are now known as the creators of the Halo franchise, and there are a lot of similarities and references to Marathon in the Halo games that may interest Halo fans, although they are two distinct series. The best part is, Marathon is now completely freeware and runs fine on PCs and Macs. Check the link at the end of the video if you're interested. The original Marathon 1 game on the Macintosh
Gameplay footage from the first level of the 4L demo of the original Marathon game on the Macintosh. It's coming up on 15 years since this first glimpse of the legendary game was released. Actually, second glimpse, if you differentiate demo 0.0, which I couldn't find a copy of online. Anyway, playing this old demo sure took me back. This opening level, with it's haunting soundtrack, is an experience seared into my brain. For those only familiar with Aleph One, you can see the original HUD in this version of the game. You can also hear that the music in Aleph One was recorded directly from this original rendition that used the Quicktime 2 instrument set (it's the only way the music has ever sounded "right" to me). BTW, this is just a quick run through on normal difficulty. I'm not showing off any vidmaster skills. I had to pull this off a video mirror on my PowerBook using composite cables, so the quality leaves a little something to be desired.
2006 Chicago Marathon - How NOT to end a race!
Robert Cheruiyot wins Chicago Marathon 10/22/06 with a time of 2:07:35 but slips at finish line - OUCH! 10/24/06 Update: CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Marathon winner Robert Cheruiyot left the hospital on Tuesday after spending two nights there with a mild concussion he sustained when he slipped at the finish line. The 28-year-old had sprinted away from fellow Kenyan Daniel Njenga during the final stretch of Sunday's race when he slipped backward and banged his head, causing internal and external bleeding. His momentum carried him across the line, making him the winner in two hours seven minutes 35 seconds. Cheruiyot, this year's Boston Marathon champion, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He had no recollection of what had happened immediately afterward and asked his coach if he had won. But his agent, Federico Rosa, said his client's memory is intact. There were decals with the marathon's logo at the finish line, but Rosa did not blame them for the fall. He suggested after the race and during a news conference on Monday that wet conditions, shoes and even just a lack of balance caused Cheruiyot to slip.
Abebe Bikila wins marathon in 1960 Rome Olympics... barefoot.
50 years ago in the 1960 Olympics in Rome, Abebe Bikila won the marathon event, 24 years after Mussolini had conquered his homeland of Ethiopia. He won in world record time (2:15:16) & becoming the first African to win an Olympic medal. Not only that, he did it barefoot (after they couldn't find a pair of shoes that fit him comfortably)! Mind you a lot of the streets here in Rome are cobblestone & since it was so hot the race was started at sunset & ended in the dark of night lit by Roman soldiers holding torches. He was a last minute replacement for the Ethiopian team & didn't even start running until he was 24. Evidently a few KM from the finish, Bikila saw the Obelisk of Axum, which invading Italian troops stole from Ethiopia during WWII (& only restored to Ethiopia in 2008). At this point Bikila was neck & neck with the Moroccan Rhadi, but wen he saw the obelisk he surged & Rhadi couldn't keep up. Even though he had an appendectomy 40 days before the event & wasn't able to train or expected to even run it, he went on to win again in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo, this time with shoes, becoming the first person to repeat gold in the marathon. You might wonder what he could've done with "modern" training & equipment, but then again this also demonstrates the importance of natural talent & determination. The biomechanical efficiency of his stride is simply awe-inspiring

Where the IBM/Windows gamers had Doom, Mac gamers had Marathon. It's a first-person shooter developed by Bungie, and it spawned two sequels. At the time, it was phenomenal... for Mac gamers. For Windows/DOS gamers... not so much. Still, it's definitely worth taking a look at for history's sake, especially since the trilogy's freeware now.
