US manufacturing company bringing work back home
In the 1950s more than 90 companies made television sets in the US, but they shut down their plants decades ago. One manufacturing company is now hoping to change that and has recently opened a plant in Detroit, Michigan. Element Electronics moved an assembly line from Asia to build some of its larger televisions using local manufacturing know-how. Labour costs are higher in the country, but Element says lower tariffs and transportation costs mean making TVs in US once again makes economic sense. Al Jazeera's Barbara Benitez reports.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Visits China Foxconn Manufacturing Plant
After months of questioning Apple's deals with Chinese manufacturing company Foxconn and the treatment of workers at plants that make gadgets like the iPhone and iPad, the tech giant's head has visited the plant in question. Photos provided by Apple this week show Tim Cook smiling and visiting with some of the reported 120000 workers employed by Foxconn's large plant. An investigation into manufacturing there by the New York Times has suggested low standards for treatment of workers and safety concerns. Cook also met with political leaders in Beijing. Apple may be going on the PR offensive now that one of the biggest negative stories about conditions at the plant was infamously retracted by Public Radio's This American Life, after much of contributor Mike Daisy's reporting was found to be fabricated. But there isn't much story to the visit beyond a few pre-approved photos. The only great power that controls its media as tightly as China is, apparently, Apple.

Honda Motor Europe President Manabu Nishimae speaking at the ceremony said Honda remained totally committed to building cars and engines in Europe with Swindon at the heart of Honda's European manufacturing activities and this is further demonstrated today with the launch of the New Civic. He added that Honda in Europe had turned a corner with a significant production increase expected in 2012. Announcing 500 new jobs, HUM Director, Andy Piatek said that Car Plant 2 would return to a two shift operation in the late Spring of next year creating a need for the new jobs in addition to the current 3000 Associates. Apple's Manufacturing Conditions Under Scrutiny After Record Profits
Apple posted record-breaking profits for its last quarter this week. Their secret to success? A mastery of cheap global manufacturing combined with a huge markup that consumers will pay for. But there's a darker narrative emerging for the tech giant, as dangerous conditions at massive plants in places like Chengdu, China are being scrutinized. The New York Times reports that the workers who put together iPads and iPhones are laboring in harsh and even deadly conditions—from ridiculous overtime expectations to chemical explosions. A growing chorus of workers advocacy groups charge that not only do Apple's Chinese partnering companies have a disregard for safety, but that Apple itself may be complicit in letting them continue. The tech giant does offer a supplier code of conduct, and delivers responsibility reports. But the Times reports [[the last sentence ended with "reports" maybe another word here]] that over half of Apples suppliers violated the code of conduct every year since 2007. Everybody knows iPads cost a lot ... but some are now wondering if they cost too much.
