Allan Florendo, assistant vice president of the sprawling SM Mall of Asia, whose arena will be the venue for the concerts Monday and Tuesday, said they were ready for the thousands of Gaga-fans and even any stray protesters. "We're very ready, security-wise. We have over 300 security personnel which is in addition and coordination with the (local) police. We have at least 100 bouncers in addition to the several ushers and porters," he said. The Asian leg of Lady Gaga's tour has seen various protests, including in Indonesia where her June show has been denied a permit by police amid threats from Islamic hardliners. Almost 500 Christian protesters gathered near the 20000-seat Manila concert venue Sunday, holding lit candles under umbrellas to shield them from the rain. "We are a peace-loving people, our objective is not to make any violence or destruction to get attention," said Orlando Cutaran, head of the Christian Professionals Evangelism Fellowship. "We don't want to interfere in their business. We are just praying on the sides that the organisers will change their minds. Manila 'paints' its air clean
The Philippines capital Manila, one of the world's most polluted cities, has launched an initiative to purify its air. The city's development authority is hoping to battle invisible toxic fumes such as nitrogen oxide by decorating the busiest areas with visible coats of air-purifying paint. The government says about 5000 people die every year from air pollution, as air quality there can get to levels worse than Beijing, despite having a smaller population. Families build their livelihoods and homes by recycling garbage. Reed Galin takes us to a free school that serves as a haven for the children. SCRIPT: (Locator: Manila, Philippines) In the shadow of the capital of the Philippines lies a city of garbage. Hundreds of families live in shanties and work round the clock here, trolling the Smokey Mountain city dump for recyclables to sell. Many suffer from skin infections and tuberculosis from living in trash. Marlee ended up here after she lost her home in a typhoon. She has four young children. Marlee, Garbage Dump Resident: "The province I came from was destroyed by the typhoon and it was so hard to find money." Marlee can collect enough discarded clothing to earn 100 pesos a day. That's about two American dollars for her family of six. Marlee, Garbage Dump Resident: "My husband has no job." Near the dump, the United Methodist Church runs a free elementary school. Here children can escape the danger and despair of daily life while their parents scavenge. Sixty children get a daily meal and uniforms. Education holds the key to breaking this cycle of poverty, and parents here hope the next generation will find opportunities beyond Smokey Mountain.
