The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela (PBS Documentary)
thedropsquad.com As Nelson Mandela prepares to step down as president of South Africa, FRONTLINE presents a deeply personal biography of one of the great figures of the 20th century. "The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela" tells the story of the man behind the myth, probing Mandela's character, leadership and life's method through intimate recollections with friends, political allies, adversaries, and his fellow prisoners and jailers on Robben Island where Mandela spent 18 of his 27 prison years. It's a two-hour biography filled with insights: from Mandela's 'royal' upbringing in the rural Transkei where old chiefs still remember him as a young boy and where his values and attitudes were shaped by tradition and royal prerogative--to old colleagues' anecdotes about his self-discipline, guarded privacy and quite early sense of his own historic destiny. A major part of "The Long Walk of Nelson Mandela" probes how Mandela transformed himself in prison from an impetuous, risk-taking radical into a mature leader and statesman. On Robben Island he became the master of his own prison; through intelligence, charm and dignified defiance he bent to his will even the most brutal prison officials. And from this he took a great lesson, says Richard Stengel, co-author of his memoirs: "He realized that the relationship between him and his Afrikaans guards was a microcosm for the whole South African experience. If he could somehow come to some modus vivendi with his guards, then he could maybe ...

(HD) Whitney Houston - So Emotional (Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, 1988)
*BEST QUALITY ON YOUTUBE* The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute was a popular-music concert staged on June 11, 1988 at Wembley Stadium, London and broadcast to 67 countries and an audience of 600 million. It was also referred to as Freedomfest, Free Nelson Mandela Concert and Mandela Day. In the US, the Fox television network heavily censored the political aspects of the concert. With clearly enough talent on board, Hollingsworth announced the bill in March, three months before the June 11 event. The list included Dire Straits, Simple Minds, George Michael, Whitney Houston, Aswad, Sly and Robbie, Bee Gees, Miriam Makeba and Hugh Masekela. The announcement of the list made it easier to bring in further artists, including the Eurythmics who had earlier refused three times, but other big names also. A week after the first bill was announced, Simple Minds threatened to quit, arguing that there was not enough grit in it: Whitney Houston and George Michael, for instance, should not be there. Hollingsworth argued that there was plenty of grit but that Whitney Houston and George Michael were needed to broaden the audience to include people who were not so likely to know about Mandela and apartheid. Simple Minds accepted the argument. Whitney Houston, who was contracted to make advertisements for Coca-Cola, did her act in front of a black backdrop instead of the usual picture of Nelson Mandela. But, according to Hollingsworth, this was nothing to do with censorship but the ...

Lessons Learned: Nelson Mandela's Release from Prison
On February 11, 1990, South Africa released Nelson Mandela from prison. Since being jailed in 1962, Mandela had become one of the world's most famous political prisoners, drawing international attention to the plight of black South Africans living under apartheid. After his release, Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 and became South Africa's first black president in 1994. James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, says that Mandela's remarkable story shows how people make history, and that more recent examples, from Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar to Mohamed Bouazizi in Tunisia, continue to prove the point that individuals shape the course of world events. This video is part of Lessons Learned, a series dedicated to exploring historical events and examining their meaning in the context of foreign relations today. www.cfr.org

The 2008 Annual Lecture was delivered by Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf on Saturday July 12 in Kliptown. "Africa is not poor, but poorly managed," she said, but encouraged the audience of hundreds of invited guests to be positive about the continent's future. But, she said, there was no stopping the African Renaissance. "The new Africa is at hand!" she said.

Reconciliation: Mandela's Miracle
Once considered a "terrorist," Nelson Mandela saved South Africa from civil war through the spirit of reconciliation. The documentary weaves a colorful tapestry of the diverse personalities who have forged South Africa's reconciliation against all odds. It is a timely and relevant message to people the world over today. This unique story teaches us that brute force cannot be effective in the long term. No matter how unjust a government, sooner or later the human spirit rebels. And when it prevails, it astounds the world by its magnanimity. Mandela turned his enemies into partners in the peace process. He understood that the oppressor must be liberated, just as much as the oppressed, as both have been robbed of their humanity. As Clint Eastwood, one of the film's interviewees, sums it up: "The world needs people like him." MPAA Rating: NOTRATED © 2010 High Wire Productions.

Portrait of Nelson Mandela- Dry Brush Technique (Oil Paint)
Two people inspired me to create this portrait. Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa is obviously one. The other is an artist named Igor Kazarin who has a popular art channel on youtube called portraitdrawing. I wanted to try his amazing Dry Brush Technique which combines oil paint, watercolor paper and a kneaded eraser. I added my own touch to this portrait by finishing it with a prismacolor pencil. -Merrill Kazanjian If you want to try Dry Brush Technique, you will need: - Watercolor paper (At least 150 LBS) - Oil Paint (I am using Lamp Black.....this technique works in with color too) - Kneaded Eraser - I also used Prismacolor Color Pencils at the end (optional)
