Two Stage HHO Rocket.mpg

Two stage water/hydrogen/oxygen rocket with electronic ignition. Hydrogen and oxygen gas is generated by passing electricity through water containing Baking Soda to make the water conductive. Stainless steel strainers are used as electrodes. The explosive gas is collected with a funnel into a 2 liter soda bottle using water displacement. Air is mixed with the gas to reduce its explosive property. An Estes rocket igniter is used to explode the gas, forcing water out of the bottle propelling the rocket. An electronic sequencing circuit powered by a 9 volt battery ignites the lower stage, then the upper stage one second later. The construction details will be available in an upcoming issue of Make Magazine. Suggested Improvements; I used 1/3 HHO (hydrogen/oxygen) 1/3 air and 1/3 water. I believe the bottle can withstand more pressure so I suggest trying 50 % HHO, 30% air and 20% water. The first stage only reached about 10 feet before the second stage fired one second later, so I would try a 3 or 4 second delay.

How To Make The Truly Terrific Tumbling Rings Of Antiquity

How To Make The Truly Terrific Tumbling Rings Of Antiquity

No-Slip Condition

As a fluid flows near a solid surface, it "sticks" to the surface, ie, the fluid matches the velocity of the surface. This so-called "no-slip" condition is a very important one that must be satisfied in any accurate analysis of fluid flow phenomena. Dye injected at the bottom of a channel through which water is flowing forms a stagnant layer near the bottom due to the noslip condition. As the dye filament is moved away from the bottom, the motion of the water is clearly apparent. A significant velocity gradient is created near the bottom.

How-to Tuesday: Valentines LED display

The complete build process, including lots of pictures, can be found on makezine.com. blog.makezine.com This week I am going to be making the Open Heart kit from the Maker Shed. The Open Heart kit uses a technique called Charliplexing for lighting up the LEDs. Why? Well, Charlieplexing allows you to control each LED's state individually. All you need to do is create a simple program and upload it to the Arduino and you have a really cool animated LED display. Check out makezine.com for all the details of the build. Check out makezine.com for the complete build.

Circuit Skills: Perfboard Prototyping

blog.makezine.com When you think - "DIY electronics", one of the first images that likely comes to mind is a bunch of parts and wire soldered to a standard piece of perforated circuit board - and that makes sense.
