One of my all-time favorite songs by Maddy Prior, melding historical elements with mythological elements in a grim but triumphant tale of a witch who seeks to escape her murderous foes by transforming herself into a hare... I've also recently disabled the comments function on this clip. I hope this video continues to lend strength & support to all of those people out there whom embrace "the old ways". GUTTER GEESE (Maddy Prior & Ian Anderson)
This is one of my favorite songs from Maddy Prior's 1978 solo album, "Woman In The Wings". The project not only had the distinction of featuring members of Jethro Tull as studio musicians, it was also supervised by Tull frontman, Ian Anderson. Ian, along with Martin Barre, John Glascock, Barriemore Barlow & David Palmer were each featured on individual tracks, evidently not wishing to have Maddy's album sound as if Tull had assembled as her back-up band. Even Ian's wife, Shona, sang backing vocals on one song, and the entire production was engineered by long-time Tull recording tech wizard, Robin Black. Wearing a hot pink cat suit padded to produce an hourglass figure and a blonde wig, little Maddy Jackson was transformed into a smaller version of curvy country icon Parton. Her mother Lindsay Jackson defended her daughter's "enhancements" Wednesday on "Today." "To some people, it's over the top, to us it's just what happens. ... It's just normal. When she wears the fake boobs and the fake butt, it's just like extra bonus," she said. Even her pint-sized competitors were unsure of what to make of Maddy's outfit. When another girl points to her chest and says, "What's that," Maddy wraps her arms around her fake bust. Mom comes to the rescue and says, "Tell her you're Dolly Parton." When it came time to perform on stage, Maddy channeled her idol, with her hands on her hips, she wiggled her bottom. One judge said that she and her fellow judges thought it was cute that Maddy came dressed as Parton. "She put a little stuffing in and looked the part," she said. So what do you think? SHADOW OF THE HARE (Maddy Prior)
Since the still photo / slide show version of "The Fabled Hare" has garnered far more views than any other video I've posted on YouTube, and because those who've commented on that fondly attended project were so kind & generous with their praise, I decided to make a special effort to search through numerous old boxes of tapes in hopes of digging up this late-1990s attempt at piecing together a music video for what is surely an eternally memorable song cycle. Here (among other relevant sources) I utilized visuals from the very nature special for which the music was originally composed, a notion that seemed to be more than appropriate. I ended up employing my camcorder (of all things), because the editing function was much more seamless than on my VCR. Hence, this is yet another one of my "straight off the TV screen" productions, and to help coax the colors into appearing a bit more vivid amid the glare, I used a paint box effect throughout. Sadly, I seem to have lost my fast-speed master tape of the documentary itself, so I can scarcely do what I'd much prefer and feed those visuals straight into my laptop for a high tech re-edit job. Therefore, I'm hopeful that everyone will enjoy the ghostly specter of that memorable program by way of these mist-laden visuals.
