The Land of the Inca, Machu Picchu
John and Cara take the train from Cuzco along the Sacred Valley to Aguas Calientes. From there they climb up to Machu Picchu to find it completely draped in clouds the nearly entire time. The site was still impressive. The ruins are a honeycomb labyrinth of temples, plazas, living quarters, industrial buildings, passageways, and ceremonial baths that all hang above massive agricultural terraces that fall away into the river below. What is really fascinating about Machu Picchu is how the Incas incorporated the natural surroundings into their mortarless polished stone structures. The temples, for example, are not symmetrical or at all balanced but instead follow the contours of a large rock or cave. Also of interest is the Inca bridge located behind the ruins as a possible escape route.

Google Earth Model of Machu Picchu
A detailed 3D Google Earth model of the ancient Inca city of Machu Picchu has been created using data from a laser scan of the site conducted by the University of Arkansas (see below). The model contains every building, every structure and every terrace in the entire city and is accurate to within 10cm (4") over most of the site. The model also includes all structures and terraces at the top of Wayna Picchu, the mountain that is in the background in most photos of Machu Picchu. The video includes a series of photos of Machu Picchu together with screen shots of the model to show the accuracy of the model. (The dark coloured texturing of the grass etc. is taken directly from the Google Earth satellite image, which is required by Google.) Peru Rail Cusco to Machu Picchu
This is said to be one of the "Great" rail journey's of the world. Originally running between Cusco & Machu Picchu in Peru, South America, but for the last year or so, starting some 40 minutes from Cusco at the small village of Poroy. This is due to the length of the journey (4 hours, from Cusco, many tourists think this is too long in a train!!) This diesel service now takes approx 2 hours to complete the journey to the Lost City of the Inca's. The train follows the river through the Urubamba valley for much of the journey. We travel through the 1000ft gorges, the mountain peaks are dusted with snow and on this Vistadome Express are made to feel like Inca Kings & Queens. At the new main station of Machu Picchu, ( the old one in the middle of the town is now used by back packers & locals only), is in the centre of the tourist hotel area, it allows rail fans, such as us, the benefits of seeing all of the trains from the comfort of our hotel.
