A Magnet Machine
This machine manipulates small spherical rare earth magnets, slicing one at a time from the end of a long chain, moving it around a bit, then dropping it back to re-connect at the tail end of the chain. It also demonstrates a little snippet of science called eddy currents. Watch how slowly the magnet falls through the aluminum tube compared to falling through air: the falling magnet generates an electrical current in the tube, and that current in turn generates a magnetic field that opposes the movement of the magnet, slowing it down dramatically. I made this machine for my father-in-law for his 75th birthday: astute viewers equipped with video analysis software and way too much time on their hands might find that the magnet drops 75mm from the tip of the slicer until caught by the lifter, and that the lifter then drops it through a 75mm long aluminum tube. UPDATE~The Camden County prosecutor's office is now in the process of interviewing the babysitter of the child that was put into a washing machine at a Camden laundromat. The child is a 13-month old boy. Following the incident, the child was taken to West Jersey Hospital where he was treated for scrapes and bruises. In the video you can clearly see a man putting the child inside a washing machine. He closes the door and for a few harrowing moments the child is trapped as the machine fills with water. Fortunately, a laundromat employee came to the rescue. He raced to the washer, saw the child inside, quickly pulled away tables, opened a panel at the back of the machines and went straight to the circuit board to cut off the power. That allowed him to open the locked washer. The employee said that the child is lucky the washer was stopped in time. The little boy is ok but his family is fighting mad. The mother of the 13 month old Saimeir Bush, spoke out today. The baby's mother says the woman in the video is the girlfriend of the boy's father who was watching the child while she was at work. She has no idea who the guy is placing her child in the washer. Sakia David says the bizarre story unfolded after she saw the video that has now gone viral. Then police came calling as the family of the child surfaced to say they were never told by the woman watching the child what happened at the Laundromat back on may 11th.
