Monkey Culture: Japanese snow monkeys washing potatoes
Japanese snow monkeys (macaques, 日本猿- nihonzaru, Macaca fuscata) on Koshima display group learning and culture by discovering and sharing the technique of washing sweet potatoes in fresh water to rinse off sand and dirt, and then salt-water, to add flavor. They also discover how to separate sand and rice clumps by throwing the mixture into water and letting the rice float to the surface. Parts are closed-captioned due to background surf noise. From the BBC documentary "Life on Earth: Episode 12: Life in the Trees" (1979), narrated by a younger David Attenborough. More Information: ► en.wikipedia.org ► en.wikipedia.org
Rescued Macaques - Operation Monkey Trek
In mid-July, a group of 25 Java Macaques arrived at Primarily Primates after their release from a New Jersey toxicology lab that went out of business. There were 55 macaque monkeys. All had been used in experiments. Sanctuaries were found for all of them. Twenty-five came to Primarily Primates. The macaques arrived wearing blue restraint collars that made it easier for the vivisectors to control them. The hard plastic collars were removed as soon as they arrived, and Dr. Valerie Kirk, our on-site veterinarian, assessed the monkeys' health.

Facial communication between mother and infant macaque monkeys 1
Mother macaque interacting with her infant. The mutual gaze is sustained and is interrupted by gaze shifts, apparently aimed at attending the object of interest of her infant. During this face-to-face interaction, the mother is gently pulling the infant's head and seems to be particularly attracted by the eyes of the infant. What we found very common are the lipsmacks that are documented in this video. These mouth-face contacts closely resemble the human kiss. We can only speculate about the possible origin of the human kiss from these particular mother-infant grooming activities. Monkey Business: Monkeys as Waiters in Japan
For more news and videos visit ☛ english.ntdtv.com Follow us on Twitter ☛ http Add us on Facebook ☛ me.lt And now onto an unusual tip to fight off a business crisis. A Japanese tavern owner is bringing up a new generation of customer pleasing waiters: macaque monkeys. Are you ready for some monkey business? STORY: This "sake house" in northern Tokyo employs two popular and unusual waiters. They are named Yat-chan and Fuku-chan (pronounced Yat-tchan and Fookoo-chan), and are a pair of Japanese macaque monkeys. Four-year-old Fuku-chan has already two years of experience under his furry belt. His main duty is delivering hot towels to customers before they order their drinks. This is how 12 year-old Yat-chan learned the tricks of the trade. [Kaoru Otsuka, Tavern Owner]: "Yat-chan first learned by just watching me working in the restaurant. It all started when one day I gave him a hot towel out of curiosity and he brought the towel to the customer." Both monkeys are well appreciated by customers who tip them with boiled soy beans. [Takayoshi Soeno, Tavern Customer]: "The monkeys are actually better waiters than some really bad human ones!" Yat-chan is a natural and is always eager to please his customers. [Shoichi Yano, Tavern Customer]: "These guys are really adorable. They're like my kids. Well actually better -- my son doesn't listen to me but Yat-chan will." And customers are impressed that Yat-chan understands their order. [Miho Takikawa, Tavern Customer]: "We ...

Macaques (long tail monkeys) at the woods of University Malaya
Some internet sites have been telling the world that the Macaques monkeys in Malaysia are fast disappearing or may become extinct due to development. LET ME TELL THE WORLD that this contention is RUBBISH. I attended convocation days at the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur) from 14 to 15th August this year 2009 and stayed in the university ground motel called "Rumah Universiti". There are lots of woods within this vast university grounds and it is inhabited by a large family of Macaques as this video shows. And in the beginning of this video, it looks like they are good in producing babies too. Not only their number is large, there are complaints that if the monkeys are passing by on the tree tops near the roads and some ladies are seen carrying shopping bags, these monkeys know that the bags may contain food and goodies and they are known to attack the ladies and rob them of the food. They also haunts the woods at the back of the university motel and should you left your windows open, theise macaques are good in sneaking through the windows and create havoc inside your room. Strangely the management of the university hotel did not leave any warnings or notices about these monkeys by keeping the windows shut at the balconies. I had the pleasure of trying to offer them some biscuits but they act more like robbers and certainly not friendly.
July 2010 Macaque Rescue
Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. (WRR) accepted seven Long-tailed Macaques from a lab in New Jersey that went bankrupt. There were a total of 55 macaques, and other sanctuaries — Mindy's Memory, Born Free USA, and Primarily Primates — all stepped up to save these precious lives. The monkeys arrived on the morning of July 17, 2010, at our sanctuary in Kendalia, Texas. They were curious about their new surroundings and no doubt, eager to be freed from the confines of their traveling crates. It is unfortunate that the lab decided to leave their hideous restraint collars on the monkeys, but we removed them within one week of their arrival here at WRR. The seven male macaques are still getting familiar with their new home via their temporary holding cages, as you can see in the video. They will soon be allowed to roam in a two-acre enclosure complete with trees, rocks, bushes, tall green grass, and blue skies overhead. Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation wants to thank In Defense of Animals for their amazing efforts in making this rescue possible. This simply could not have been done without their persistence and hard work. In addition to coordinating the efforts and dealing with all the legal issues, IDA also saw to it that the monkeys were safely transported to the sanctuaries where finally they can now leave their past behind them. We also would like to thank Camille with Win Animal Rights for her efforts in this rescue. She was a champion for these monkeys and would not ...

Febe the Macaque
Febe is a gorgeous macaque monkey who lives at Primarily Primates. I guess you know you've been somewhere when you have a "favorite macaque" - Febe is definitely mine :) I never knew this about macaques, but they have cheek pouches. If you let Phoebe see all the treats you have in your hand, she would literally stuff her face and demand more. She was very polite with me, but threw quite a hissy fit with someone else who failed to give her the entire bag of grapes they had. Filed this video under "pets and animals" but monkeys are not pets at all. Monkeys like Phoebe are caught between the wild nature of their genetics and a human world in which they can not thrive, however "tame" their rearing appears to make them. Long-tailed macaque in Bukit Timah National Park - Singapore
The Long-tailed Macaque (macaca fascicularis) is to be found in a wide range of habitats including primary and secondary forest, mangroves, plantations and the outskirts of towns and villages. Its success is largely due to a varied diet of fruits, leaves, small mammals and birds, shellfish and crabs, as well as human leftovers. In Singapore it is the commonest primate. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is what Singapore used to be 180 years ago. Before the early 19th century, most of the island was covered in lowland, primary forest. Between 1820 and 1870, a substantial portion of virgin forest was cleared to develop the island as an important trading post. By 1886, only 10% of the original forest cover remained. The development of MacRitchie Reservoir (then known as the Impounding Reservoir) in 1868 brought the forest devastation around the area to a halt. The forest around the reservoir was protected as a water catchment reserve. The reserve retains one of the largest tracts of primary rainforest left in Singapore. Bukit Timah is also home to Singapore's highest hill at 163.63 m. Composed mainly of granite, Bukit Timah Hill was once an active quarrying site in the mid-1900s. A 28 minutes documentary about Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in Singapore is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is available on DVD at WWW.FAUNAFILM.NL Visit WWW.STOCKSHOT.NL for highres version or broadcast video footage. The Hidden Life of the Barbary Macaques
This is a video about the Barbary Macaques. It is filmed in the Atlas Cedar forest of Ifrane in the Middle Atlas of Morocco. These macaques are only found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco with a small, possibly introduced, population in Gibraltar. The monkey is yellowish-brown to grey with lighter undersides, growing to a maximum size of 75 cm (30 in) and 13 kg (29 lb). Its face is a dark pink and its tail is vestigial. The front limbs of this monkey are longer than its hind limbs. Females are somewhat smaller than males. Dwelling in forests of cedar, pine and oak, the Barbary Macaque may frequent elevations of 2100 m (6900 ft) or more. It is a diurnal animal, dividing its time more or less equally between arboreal and terrestrial territory. Mostly herbivorous, this monkey feeds on leaves, roots, and fruit, but will also eat insects. By day, the Barbary Macaque patrols a territory which may span several square kilometers. The Barbary Macaque moves about energetically on all fours, occasionally rising erect on its hind limbs to survey for threats.
Britches: the baby macaque monkey rescued from a laboratory
Britches was the name of a stump-tailed macaque monkey who was born at the University of California, Riverside in March 1985. He was removed from his mother at birth and had his eyelids sewn shut as part of a three-year maternal and sensory-deprivation study involving 24 infant monkeys. Britches was removed from the laboratory when he was five weeks old during a raid in 1985 by the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). The ALF made a videotape of their raid and of Britches' condition when they found him. Find out more at: www.britches.org.uk

Facial communication between mother and infant macaque monkeys 2
A mother gesturing at her 6-day-old infant. The type of gestures that can be observed (lipsmacking and teeth-chatter) are common among rhesus macaques. What is striking here is the exaggeration of the gesture that is accompanied by head-bobbings in order to further attract infant attention. This seems to be specific to mother-infant relationship. The exaggeration of facial displays and other modifications of the behavior in humans (eg, the high pitch in the voice) are typical ways of communicating between mother and infant, the so called 'motherese.' Our study demonstrated that these types of gesturing are very common during the first three weeks of the infant macaque life. However, their functions remain unclear.
