Girl with lung cancer gets married 5 days before dying
Katie Kirkpatrick's story is a powerful reminder that we can still find joy in the midst of suffering tragedy by focusing on and celebrating the present moment. On Valentine's Day, 2002, Katie Kirkpatrick, then a freshman at Rochester College (a small Christian college in Rochester Hills, Michigan), was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Undaunted, Katie strove to keep up with her studies, but she suffered another setback in 2003 when she was diagnosed with an inoperable lung tumor wrapped around her pulmonary artery. Nonetheless, in 2004 the resilient Katie took part in champion cyclist Lance Armstrong's Ride for the Roses cancer fundraiser. On January 15, 2005, twenty-one-year-old Katie—the girl "with a contagious smile and unrelenting optimism" who had been battling cancer for three years—married twenty-three-year-old Lapeer County sheriff's deputy Nick Goodwin, her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, at Church of Christ in Hazel Park, Michigan. Donna Summer, the woman affectionately known as the Queen of Disco, died in Florida this morning after a battle with cancer. She was 63.contracted it by inhaling toxic particles after the 9/11 attack in New York City. According to a TMZ report, sources close to Summer have stated the singer was trying to keep a tight lip on the extent of her illness. "We spoke to someone who was with Summer a couple of weeks ago ... who says she didn't seem too bad," shares TMZ. "In fact, we're told she was focused on trying to finish up an album she had been working on." The five-time Grammy award winner rose to superstardom in the '70s with hits such as "Hot Stuff," "Last Dance" and "Bad Girls." Her success continued well into the '80s with "This Time I Know It's for Real," and "She Works Hard for the Money." Summer, along with producer Giorgio Moroder, were accredited with defining the '70s dance music era, influencing a slew of acts including David Bowie and Duran Duran. Summer married Bruce Sudano, the Brooklyn Dreams singer, back in the '80s. They have two daughters.There is so much about Donna Summer that we didn't know... and not just the cancer that took her life. Let's start with her relationship to rock.
