Low Rider - War (1975)
"Low Rider" is a song written by the band War and appearing on their 1975 album "Why Can't We Be Friends?". It reached number one on the Billboard R&B charts and peaked at number seven on the Pop Singles chart. According to the Allmusic review of the song, "the lyric takes the cool image of the lowrider — the Chicano culture practice of hydraulically hot-rodding classic cars — and using innuendo, extends the image to a lifestyle." War, originally called Eric Burdon and War and often typeset as WAR, is an American funk band from California. Formed in 1969, War was a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin music, rhythm and blues, and reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. The band has sold over 50 million records to date. Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe. A particular feature of War's sound is the use of harmonica and saxophone playing melody lines in unison, sounding like a single instrument, for example in the melody of "Low Rider". Their music has been sampled and recorded by many singers and groups, ranging from R&B/pop singers such as Janet Jackson to nu metal band Korn and hip-hop groups like TLC. Lowrider culture reaches back to 1930s Los Angeles, where it became popular for style-conscious Latino-Americans to load their cars with sandbags to bring it closer to the road. Style was everything, and when lowered cars were banned in California in the 1950s, it became necessary to find a way to raise and lower the car simply to avoid fines. The solution was to use hydraulics from old fighter planes left over from World War II. The rapper Kid Frost showcased lowriding in the early 90s hit Lowrider, and since then, the cars are closely associated with hip hop culture. Celebration of Art and Culture on our own terms. MLCC show number 17 The largest longest running Gathering of Lowriders in the country. Victor M. Montañez narrates portion of the award winning HBO Documentary Americanos, Latino Life in the US. The Midwest Lowriders gathered in Sterling, Rock Falls, and Dixon, Illinois. They changed the dichotomy of the conservative Reagan era at his very hometown. The Midwest Lowrider Gatherings were the embodiment of "Family Values" The show said no to the standard bikini contests expected at car shows, no to gangsta music at the very height of the genre, no tobocco money and eventually removed alcohol from the successful formula that proved skeptics wrong year after year. and focused on family fun. This film was produced by Edward James Olmos and Nick Athas for HBO. Soundtrack by El Vez, Dr. Loco and the Jalapeño Band. War, Tito Puente and Carlos Santana. In this clip you hear the first three.
