Hip-hop is notorious for short-lived careers, but LL Cool J is the inevitable exception that proves the rule. Releasing his first hit, "I Can't Live Without My Radio," in 1985 when he was just 17 years old, LL initially was a hard-hitting, streetwise b-boy with spare beats and ballistic rhymes. He quickly developed an alternate style, a romantic -- and occasionally sappy -- lover's rap epitomized by his mainstream breakthrough single, "I Need Love." LL's first two albums, Radio and Bigger and Deffer, made him a star, but he strived for pop stardom a little too much on 1989's Walking With a Panther. By 1990, his audience had declined somewhat, since his ballads and party raps were the opposite of the chaotic, edgy political hip-hop of Public Enemy or the gangsta rap of NWA, but he shot back to the top of the charts with Mama Said Knock You Out, which established him as one of hip-hop's genuine superstars. By the mid-'90s, he had starred in his own television sitcom, In the House, appeared in several films, and had racked up two of his biggest singles with "Hey Lover" and "Doin' It." In short, he had proven that rappers could have long-term careers.

HipHollywood spoke with an emotional LL Cool J Friday night at a charity event at the luxurious Montage Residences Beverly Hills, where the NCIS LA star remembered his friend, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch. "It hurts, the Beastie Boys helped me break into the business. I wouldn't be here, talking about the things we are doing today, if it wasn't for them," said the Rapper turned Actor. Yauch, also known as MCA, passed away Friday morning after a long battle with cancer. LL, who like the Beastie Boys, helped build the Def Jam dynasty, struggled to put into words how much he will miss Yauch. "A lot of people think it's about the fact that they were the first white rappers, but hey, those first white rappers bought into the business one of the biggest, greatest black rappers ever". LL hosted an event benefiting St.Vincents Meals on Wheels but recently was bestowed the honor of introducing the Beastie's when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

LL Cool J released the album 'Phenomenon' in 1997. The second single on the album is "4,3,2,1", which features DMX, Method Man, Redman, and Canibus. LL and Canibus clashed during the production of "4,3,2,1" over a reference Canibus made in the song about LL's microphone tattoo. Canibus: "Yo L is that a mic on your arm? Let me borrow that". LL felt the line was disrespectful and responded on the track: "The symbol on my arm is off limits to challengers, you hold the rusty swords I swing the excalibur" and: "Now let's get back to this mic on my arm - if it ever left my side it'd transform into a time bomb. You don't wanna borrow that, you wanna idolize. And you don't wanna make me mad ***** you wanna socialize". Canibus ultimately agreed to remove his tattoo reference, but a rivalry had been born. A short time later Canibus released 'Can-I-Bus?' which included the scorching LL Cool J diss "Second Round KO" LL Cool J responded with an equally charged diss track called "The Ripper Strikes Back".
