Three own goals helped Liverpool ease past Brighton to secure an FA Cup quarter-final tie against Stoke. Martin Skrtel gave the Carling Cup finalists the lead before Kazenga LuaLua levelled from 25 yards. Brighton's Liam Bridcutt put through his own net before Liverpool striker Andy Carroll made it 3-1. Two more own goals came from Bridcutt and Lewis Dunk before Luis Suarez completed the rout just minutes after missing a late penalty. It was a resounding victory for Kenny Dalglish's side ahead of next Sunday's Wembley date with Cardiff City in the Carling Cup final. Liverpool's trophy cabinet has been gathering dust for six years, but suddenly they find themselves within touching distance of an FA Cup-Carling Cup double after their biggest win since Dalglish returned to the helm last January. Almost 29 years on to the day, Brighton were back at the scene of their best-ever FA Cup victory - a 2-1 triumph at Anfield, on their way to the 1983 final. But the visitors found themselves behind in only the fifth minute when Skrtel, Liverpool's form player of late, took advantage of poor marking by Ashley Barnes from Steven Gerrard's corner to arrow a close-range near-post header past Peter Brezovan. Brighton had been here before. ** I've blocked a few people already. I'd rather not have to. I'm not in for personal attacks; I'd much rather the conversation were about the subject at hand. I'm in support of Alan, but I'll happily allow comments that go either way provided it's not rudeness for the sake of it. ** Let's put this to bed. He clearly says that the Hillsborough disaster is one of the worst things to happen in his lifetime. All he's really saying is that life goes on, and actually their policy of refusing to play on a specific day is unique among many clubs that have suffered similar tragedies. What's more, their policy also has consequences on other teams: in this case Chelsea have got a tough evening kick off on the Sunday three days before having to compete against the strongest team in European football currently. (As an aside, his observations about Kenny Dalglish are spot-on.) --------------------------- Now that there have been a lot of comments (both in support and against Alan Davies), I wanted to offer a few thoughts that come across. 1) The notion that being offended or outraged adds to an argument is fallacious. Perhaps Davies could have formed his argument in more careful language, but that doesn't change the essence of his argument. 2) It strikes me that detractors of Davies react in a very similar way to the way religious people react when they feel their religion is being questioned. Kenny Dalglish sacking - Opinions from Liverpool fans
Kenny Dalglish will have been left "shocked and distraught" by his sacking as Liverpool manager, according to former Anfield team-mate and close friend Alan Hansen. Dalglish was dismissed after one full season in his second spell at Liverpool in which they won the Carling Cup and finished eighth in the Premier League. But Hansen insists that should have been enough to guarantee 61-year-old Dalglish at least another year at Anfield and believes there was genuine cause for optimism about further improvement next year. Hansen told BBC Sport: "Kenny will be shocked and distraught because he loved Liverpool Football Club and their supporters. Just walking through the door at Anfield gave him an extra spring in his step and he will feel fragile today about not being able to do that again as manager. "And as his friend I know how much he put into the job. Even when he went back to work at the academy before becoming the manager again he put his heart and soul into it. I'd ring him for a chat on a Sunday and he would be down there. He just loved being at Liverpool. "He was so enthusiastic about working with those kids and what he could pass on to them and how he could improve them and nobody could have worked harder when he was manager because he loved Liverpool so much." Fernando José Torres Sanz (Spanish pronunciation: [ferˈnando ˈtores]; born 20 March 1984), nicknamed El Niño (The Kid in Spanish),[4] is a Spanish footballer who plays for Chelsea and the Spain national team as a striker. Torres started his career with Atlético Madrid, progressing through their youth system to the first team squad. He made his first team debut in 2001 and finished his time at the club having scored 75 goals in 174 La Liga appearances. Prior to his La Liga debut, Torres played two seasons in the Segunda División for Atlético Madrid, making 40 appearances and scoring seven goals. He joined Premier League club Liverpool in 2007 after signing for a club record transfer fee. He marked his first season at Anfield by being Liverpool's first player since Robbie Fowler in the 1995--96 season to score more than 20 league goals in a season. Torres became the fastest player in Liverpool history to score 50 league goals after scoring against Aston Villa in December 2009. He left the club in January 2011 to join Chelsea for a record British transfer fee of £50 million, which also made him the most expensive Spanish player in history. Torres is a Spanish international and made his debut for the country against Portugal in 2003. He has since participated in four major tournaments, UEFA Euro 2004, the 2006 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Dalglish attacks hypocritical FA over Liverpool treatment
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has said the FA did not set a good example by appealing against Wayne Rooney's three-match Euro 2012 ban. Dalglish said: "I find it a bit strange the FA are supposed to be setting an example for things yet they appeal against Wayne Rooney's ban." Rooney's ban, imposed after being sent off against Montenegro, was reduced to two games by Uefa. Dalglish is also unhappy at the FA's treatment of his striker Luis Suarez. Suarez is facing a racism charge dating from October and has also been charged with misconduct after allegedly making an obscene gesture to fans following the Reds' 1-0 defeat at Fulham on Monday. Dalglish is unhappy that no date has been set for the Uruguayan international to answer the racism charge. "The fact it has taken nine weeks to get a decision on one of the other charges is a bit of a joke as well," the Scot told a press conference. "I don't think that has helped as well. The circus which is around about him has been caused mainly by that." A screen was lowered at the conference on which the club played what they said was a series of unpunished infringements against Suarez during the Fulham game. Dalglish has already indicated he thought referee Kevin Friend did not give his team the benefit of 50-50 decisions during Monday's match.
